In late April 2000, around 5 p.m., Stephen Cooke picks up Heidi Bernadzikowski from work downtown in the car they share. He takes her home, then runs some errands. When he returns a few hours later, he opens the door and crosses the threshold to a nightmare -- Heidi's throat has been cut. MORE: bit.ly/3lH6JOf

I agree but, ultimately, the POS boyfriend (and I cringe calling him that) did deserve the harshest sentence. But for him, none of it would have happened. Would those other two POS’s murdered someone else? Probably. But as for her, he betrayed her in the biggest way and he set it all in motion. Had those two not killed her, he would have gotten someone else. I hope he rots in prison and then hell.

I agree. It was his mother who persuaded him to make a full confession if he wanted forgiveness from God which is evidently why he confessed. Most psychopaths take their sins to their graves. He probably got a lighter sentence for confessing. There is a hierarchy of rank among evil men; the masterminds are at the top and the henchmen lower down the food chain and therefore less culpable because they aren't as smart.

I am not in any way denying that court and judge knows it best... But wasn't it that the girl rented a storage unit to store her things by borrowing money from her own friend proven? And her friends mentioned she was not happy in a relationship. Too bad that computer in the photo got ignored, it would have shed some light on both the boyfriend and the girlfriend. All I say is that, you never know. People are absolutely undoubtedly capable of much more depravity and going down a spiral than you give them credit for.

Chris James I get what you’re saying but they had no personal connection to her. The man who “supposedly” loved her, slept with her, etc set it all up. If not for him, those two bunglers would never have known her name. Prosecutors are getting to where they will offer such small amounts of time to get the main person or, even worse, just get a case closed even when they have enough evidence to get a conviction. It’s become mind blowing what some of these murderers end up with. Sick.

Yup In the beginning, I was; wow I am wrong about analysing his phone call, and finding it lacking in emotions despite the sobs, when they mention the dna belongs to someone else far away. Lucky for the police the killer had a Jesus moment. He’s been forgiven, now he can describe the incident without any remorse. Let’s hope the police detecting process and procedures, are as stated much better now. Frightening a man of no scruples, the moment she decides to leave him, he remembers the insurance and got to work on it. He probably would have killed her, if she had stayed with him. Accidental death bigger payments. Life with no parole and 30 years on top. 👍

This interviewer of the show right now is questionable. I watched another case earlier, where she asked a whole family to leave the room. She suggested that, the children leave first. In about 2-3 seconds, she asked a weird question. Then suggested that, the adult family members, who didn't realize the killer, in so many words is in their family should go too. At least 6 family members, adults and children, was out of the room at this point. It turned out that, the victim's sister's husband, left DNA in the car. No other DNa but his and the deceased. The victim's sister was his wife. There was life insurance involved too! This host\interviewer, needs to be cancelled!
