Reminds me of our GE U26C's in Otira. The Otira grade is hellishly long and the second or third steepest in the country, and they have to haul fair length coal trains up it, so 5 U26C's (the NZ Rail DXC class) are tied together and haul the coal drag up the hill and through the tunnel. Before they ripped out all the DC electification, it used to be 3 Toshiba-made EO class electric locomotives doing the job, sometimes with a DX lending a helping hand

Man, that was so sick. Nice shot, wish trains were like this here. Why is ALL the power heading the train. I mean, very first cars took tons of abuse pulling this sick train behind. Is it reasonable to evenly distribute engines or that is not woking and why ?. Just very curious on this arrangement. Those cars most be solid as hell.

Please help me understand: the driver controls the whole train from the front engine unit. Let's say he applies throttle of 6 clicks. The engine he is driving responds, but how does that 6-click 'instruction' get transmitted to the engine units behind?

Back in the late '80s I saw a train heading east through Silver Spring with (IIRC) fourteen engines: eight leading and six trailing. I have to think they were shifting locos around and wanted to avoid a separate movement.

Longest F-ing train that I've ever seen in my Life! Wow...
Transporting all this with trucks would be air pollution. I assume that one railroad car is worth three trucks (90 ton load per railcar against 30 ton per truck) would make 470 trucks, with per truck 400hp would make 188000hp!, against with 3000hp per engine for the locomotives equaling 21000hp. Every hp equals a certain amount of carbon dioxide, so do your maths. A train causes 9-10 times less air pollution than a truck per ton of load, let alone your car (1,5-2 ton) with only you in it.

This far from the biggest train in the world. AND, there are NO coaches on it, it is a freight train. It is not uncommon for mountain railroading to use 8 to 12 locomotives or for extra locomotives to be on the head end but dead in consist and simply being moved to a terminal where they are needed..
@BaltimoreAndOhioRR10 жыл бұрын
that is true. but it is rare here

Yep thats a power move. When there is a lot of engines on a train and its not in the mountains its usually a power move heading to the yard that the extra engines are going to be serviced in.

mondern shadic . rigsofrodsmaster see, told you.
