1989 Baltimore Orioles: Why Not? Orioles vs Angels Mike Devereaux Game Winning Home Run

The 1988 Baltimore Orioles started the '88 season 0-21 and finished that year with a record of just 54 wins, and 108 losses. So when the 1989 season began, no one gave the Orioles a chance to even compete. But the young and hungry Orioles had something to prove, going 87-75 and finishing just two games out of first place in the American League East. During that season, the term, "WHY NOT?", was coined by Oriole fans, and it has lived with us since that magical season.

I was at this game. I was 8 years old and we sat in the upper deck first base side. I remember how crazy everyone went whe Devereaux hit that homerun

If you look closely at the fans as the ball leaves the park, you'll notice a man in the front row, 2 seats on the foul side of the yellow fair pole. He is wearing an orange Orioles' staff shirt. He slaps the wall with his left hand in disappointment. He is doing that because the ball went directly over his head. He is, to this day, a life long fan and will never admit it was foul. I know this because that is me in that seat. So if you've ever were curious about the truth, watch the video again, and you'll see my reaction to thr true path of that ball...
