Totally amazing! I am speechless watching you paint ; do viewers understand the utter difficulty and complexity of this artform? The years and hours of practice you have dedicated now allow you to create a spontaneous masterpiece in just minutes. It is truly astounding. You make it look so easy, as as an instructor of this art form I know is it very diffcult. I am smiling and my heart is smiling. Your color unity is very unique and increases the meditative aspects. Bravo!

Hi Carol! Thanks for watching my videos! The Chinese characters are my artist's name, which my teacher gave me. It is pronounced "Wei Jen" (the closest in sound to "Virginia") and translates as "Nothing But Love". Below that, in red, is my chop or seal - a stamp which authenticates my signature.
@VirginiaLloydDavies

It is slightly edited. I have cut out most of the pauses when I was rinsing and reloading my paintbrush. In a live performance, this isn't a problem because the audience has plenty to look at - me rinsing, Josh playing, the painting on the screen - but on a video the painting is the only thing to engage the eyes. Once it was edited, Josh improvised again, this time watching the edited version while he played, which is how we got the music to match.

How long have you been working with this technique? I've been interested since I was a kid, I paint with acrylic on canvas but there's an immediacy and energy to this these works. Can contemporary works be created with this technique? Cheers👍
@VirginiaLloydDavies
@VirginiaLloydDavies 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's been 43 years since my first brush stroke! You're quite right: it's all about immediacy and energy. That's the "ch'i" you're seeing. The technique is based on Chinese calligraphy strokes, so that's the foundation of the discipline. You can certainly create contemporary works on "rice" paper (called "xuan" paper in Chinese). I suggest you check out my website joyfulbrush.com and my new book "Mindful Artist: Sumi-e Painting" for more ideas. Good luck and happy painting!

I'm not sure what you mean by 4, 3, 2 leaves. There are many different patterns for bamboo leaves. The one I am using mostly in this video is 'flying swallow'. Fish tail is 2 or 4 leaves, goldfish tail is 3 leaves. The important thing is achieving harmony of style.

Do you mean the way I HOLD the brush? If so, you are right, I do not hold it in the traditional Chinese way. That never worked for me. If holding it the traditional way works for you, I encourage you to do it. The brush is just a tool, though.

Paint the idea; I like that. My high school art teacher always said, "That is not a flower. It's a representation of a flower to your brain. Don't try to paint the flower. Represent the flower.". Watching your painting emerge is a perfect example of his statement. Such beautiful music as well.

Tx for your kind comment. Brushes can be made out of anything, including feathers, twigs, strips of material and extruded plastic. Most synthetic brushes are made for oils and acrylics but you can use them for Chinese art. You need round brushes to create the strokes.

These days, you can buy anything on the internet and have it shipped all over the world. I buy my supplies from Oriental Art Supply in California. They have a website. You can buy the color in chips (the traditional way) or get a box of Marie's tubes. Chinese ink doesn't run once it has dried on the rice paper. An absorbent paper is best. Round brushes made of weasel or goat hair are good. Try one called 'bamboo-orchid' brush. Good luck and happy painting!

A poem would be good. If I were a Chinese poet, I might have added one. As it is, I am 'but an egg' when it comes to Chinese calligraphy. My teacher, master painter I-Hsiung Ju, encouraged me to concentrate on painting rather than writing. I do practice calligraphy regularly, but that's a long way from writing a poem spontaneously during a performance! We do what we can!

In this particular video, I am using a combination of Chinese black ink and Western silk dyes (Sennelier). I add a little clear glue to my water when using the silk dyes since they have no body to them on their own and will run. The colors are not always accurate because of cameras, projectors, computer screens, etc. A Chinese brush is very different. Why not try one and see if you like it?

Good to hear you got a kit and can get started. Be aware that the quality of the brush is paramount. If you have a good brush, you can paint on anything. Are you grinding your own ink on an inkstone, or are you using bottled ink? Whichever you use, it needs to be a good, strong black. You are at the beginning of an exciting adventure! Have fun!

@ukforever1000 Wow, thanks for the accolade! I'll be in China in September, watching other master artists perform. It is always exciting for me, to see other painters interpret this style.

Why do you paint 5 leaves instead of 4, 3, 2, the traditional way? Is it your own style?

thank you for your video, as a complete beginner to Chinese brush I am a bit muddled over which brush is best to use for the bamboo stems/canes - which brush is best please?

For bamboo and orchid it is usually best to use a hard bristle brush because it springs back to a point. You can find brushes that are specifically called 'bamboo-orchid brushes. Good luck and happy painting!

if you think 4 minutes is a long time to paint a bird, then you may want to invest your time in something other than painting.
