Dutch farmers are discovering bamboo as the crop of the future. Together with Bamboologic and others, they are planting part of their land with this fast-growing fiber crop that is used, for example, for biobased buildings. Bamboologic guarantees the purchase of the bamboo canes. Together with LTO Bedrijven, NL Groen and farmers such as Jacob van den Borne from Reusel in Brabant, bamboo is on the rise in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.
While the agricultural agreement is still pending, a number of Dutch farmers are setting their own sights on bamboo. They see this fast-growing fiber crop as a way to modernize their operations and get their sector out of the nitrogen, water, biodiversity and CO2 crises. They are planting one or two acres with small plants and growing them over five years into canes several meters high that capture lots of CO2 and nitrogen and create additional biodiversity. The bamboo processing industry, which has also begun a growth spurt, knows how to use the crop. Textiles, construction, insulation materials and food are well-known applications. In addition to many new bamboo applications that frontrunners are working on. These applications are replacing old-fashioned materials that now often emit a lot of CO2 during manufacture.
To help farmers recoup their investments in bamboo planting and cultivation faster, Climate Cleanup Foundation has initiated ONCRA, a new open source and transparent carbon credits certification system. What is special about ONCRA is that it sets requirements for buyers' reduction targets. Greenwashing is thus prevented. Farmers are rewarded through ONCRA certificates for the long-term sequestration of CO2 in the soil of their land. Together with Bamboologic, LTO companies, NL Groen and Doing Business Doing Good (DBDG), the first bamboo credits were launched in the Netherlands. Festival Into The Great Wide Open and DBDG are among the first buyers of these credits. Both organizations aim to accelerate nature-positive living and working.
