The worst part is the people defending this stupid update fail to realize: Bambu could literally solve this problem by implementing 100% functionality in offline mode (Ie stop intentionally making it so we can't access SD card) and enable a toggle in the machines display: Enable 3rd party access to this machine. Done. That's it. That's all they needed to do, but instead, they want to take more control of your machines. Also you're 100% on point with the direction this is going: You'll need the RFID tagged Bambu filament, you'll only be able to print via Bambu Studio, which will of course require a subscription, and only allowed to print files that have been accessed via Maker World. That's where this is going.

Bambu could support the maker community who literally invented and feasibility-tested every feature they offer, become open source, and enjoy years of healthy profitability based on a solid product, but they’re choosing the insipid path of money grubbing consolidation instead. So I have some news. Last night at 10pm one of my 10 x1c’s (newer q4 2024 batch) completely shut off and when I turned it back on it instantly went into update mode. I know they’re pushing out beta updates, but I would’ve thought it would be a prompt. Knowing how bad this update is, I turned my printer off completely and now I cannot turn it on. My printer is bricked because I rely on 3rd party software and some homebrew apps I made to manage my prints. Fuck you bambu, you’re costing me money everyday and this is unacceptable.

This really upsets me. I got an A1 mini last year and it’s been great for the few months I’ve used it but this is really sad. I’ve turned on LAN only mode and blocked the printer from accessing internet. Hopefully that should prevent bambu from reaching in and updating it

Have been enjoying my A1 for a while now (first printer) and was about to purchase the X1C Combo. The only thing holding me back was a constant niggling doubt that I should just buy the P1S instead, and do the hardened mod. Well, now I guess I won't be buying either. Instead I'll wait and research which of the new multi colour printers from other manufacturers I will buy instead. I'm somebody that has been moving my digital world more and more towards locally hosted, locally controlled and open source. I've spent the last twelve months doing things like setting up my own local nas, media and application servers, instead of cloud based and subscription models. And moving my smart home stuff over to all locally controlled devices running on home assistant. So this is just not acceptable, and unless they change course, I'm out. Anybody got any good recommendations for core xy printers that have a multi colour / material system, and can print a wider range of materials than my A1?

Well, Bambu just lost me. I've bought 2 klipper printers in the past 6 months after buying 3 Bambu labs printers before that. I probably buy 100 dollars of filament from Bambu every few months. Not anymore. I don't trust them. Thanks for the great products and pushing the hobby forward bambu, but these Klipper machines are damned good, and mine. I will use my Bambu printers in LAN mode with Orca slicer until which time they no longer work, or they get replaced.

I have been holding back on the Bambu due to lack of open source firmware, and I feel vidicated. No amount of promises overcomes the risk of having your printer remotely disabled without recourse due to a forced manufacturerer's cloud dependency. I repeat the only safe way to purchase a printer is an open firmware and a well documented ability to install unsigned firmware, so the firmware can be forked in case the manufacturer goes rogue or out of business. A rollback of this policy is not enough. The only thing that can restore trust is open sourcing the firmware and documentation on how to install unsigned firmware!

I think, Bambu found out that they are trapped themself. These machines are so good with just minor things to make better. Would you buy a new Bambu just for a better chamber light? Or a new P1/X1 for a faster nozzle swap like on the A1? Or for less poop, you already can reduce drastically by software? No! I in person would not even think of that. Faster prints? Naaaa it works over night, I don´t care and slow them down anyway, for better quaility. The end of the speed in my opinion is due to the filaments, not the machines. Better Display for P1 Series? Nice to have, but I can work with the basic one. I got 12 BL printers here and I´m not even intrested in the new one top of the line, beeing released in a few weeks. BL did such a good job, that only a few fan boys would bite their arms off, to get the new one. BL reached a technical status, were they can not sell a new one in that success they did with the existing machines. No one buys a new microwave because the diplay has now one more digit -right? So they need to force people into their ecosystem and to buy their filament to earn money and stay upfloat. Like HP lets you only scan on its printers when there is a full color tank in it- the reason, why I would never buy a HP. Today, my 12 BLs went worthless, the devil showed its face. Here in Munich, Germany, its only a 4 hour drive to Prusa headquarters. The next printers will be the Core XYs of Prusa. Bambu Lab lost my trust completely forever.

DJI did the same thing with their drones. I can no longer control my Mavic Air with my tablet. They now REQUIRE that you use your mobile phone to access the drone through proprietary software that has effectively killed the use of my drone. I like to use the tablet because of the bigger screen, but my tablet is no longer authorized despite that I've been using it for years. Now the software no longer works turning my once favorite piece of electronics to now be a desk ornament. I can see this happening with Bambu Lab also and if it does, I will effectively leave the world of 3D printing out of sheer frustration and disgust with these Chinese manufacturers.

When did this happen? I have every drone made since the Tello ED and they all work with my tablets, DJI Smart Controller, DJI RC 2 none of which have access to 4G/5G networks. I generally put my phone into airplane mode when flying to stop the excess WiFi noise. I think I found the issue, some DJI drones require connection to DJI intermittently, the air must be one of those. Enable the tablets WiFi, hook the tablet to your home hotspot for the internet, start the drone and controller, let it connect and check for updates, power off, turn off WiFi then power on everything, the drone should be ok.

I pulled the drone out of the closet over the weekend to see if I could get some shots of the rare snowfall in North Carolina and found I could not operate the drone at all. The software no longer opened on the DJI GO app on my Samsung Galaxy 8+ Tablet. I use the tablet because of the much larger screen makes it easier to operate and spot any potential collision spots. When I went to the DJI website, they no longer host the software package on their site directly for download. You are now required to SCAN a QR code with your CELL PHONE ONLY. They don't support the use of tablets anymore, only cell phones. So now my $1200 drone which I've owned for over 6 years is essential a desk ornament or brick. It's disgusting to me that a manufacturer can take away your ability to use their product years after you purchased it in good faith. This should be illegal and tantamount to THEFT. At no time did I agree to terms that would allow them to shut off my access to their product when used in a lawful manner. It's despicable and bad business practice. I won't buy a DJI ever again.

@@wowareolys It's an 8ft long workbench where I used to have 4 Sunlu S8 3d Printers. I removed all four of the old ones, because manual bed leveling was a huge pain in the neck and they were crazy slow (printing about 60mm/sec compared to the Bambu Lab 150mm/sec). I was planning on cannibalizing the old 3D printers for parts to make more robots, but now I'm considering pulling them out of mothball storage and returning them to service....sad day .

I was thinking hard about upgrading from an Ender 3 to a Bamboo product. A far as I am concerned, there is no coming back from this. So even if they "fix" the problem and say nice and reassuring things, they can go jump in a lake. This is the exact same problem as when AutoCad changed the business model for Fusion 360. People are missing a point here. Bambu now has exclusive access to all your prints. Expect to see them pop up on other sites for sale by other countries. I would suggest in no uncertain terms that ANY prints that are private, experimental, or copy righted should not be printed on this platform. Any R and D work or key parts need to be handled by printers not open to theft, unauthorized copies, or inability to print critical parts. In my opinion this is just a way for other countries to steal ideas and profit from it at your expense.

Yep, this all happening by a company in a region that does not believe in intellectual property rights, but I bet they would sue if someone started manufacturing a clone of their product in the west, but the reverse is acceptable business practice to them. People haven’t learned yet. Lots of good FBI videos on the theft of trade secrets, if they can steal it from your employees or from your company it is fair game to them.

Regarding the security component of all this, Bambu is either incompetent or conmen. Dealt with an HVAC guy that was the same, hard to prove whether incompetent or a con job, but definitely one of those two choices.

I was going to be using it for some design work that I DON'T want to need to go through anything cloud based [potential for patents, and I don't want my IP stolen out from under me during development prototyping]. If it’s a P1S or P1P don’t worry. Put it in LAN Mode and you’re done. 👍 The Mainboard is just a microcontroller.

If it has already shipped, it likely won't have the offending firmware, since it is still Beta. When it arrives, simply don't upgrade the firmware and you will be able to run it in LAN only mode. It does mean you won't have external access through the Bambu Handy app however. I run mine in LAN only mode, for the same reasons, and use Orca Slicer. I also have my own external LED indicator system in development, which connects directly to the built-in MQTT server, not through Bambu's MQTT server.

No you didn't. If you haven't updated to the Beta firmware, put it in LAN only mode and it can't update. All files are sent via your local WIFI direct to the printer, with no internet interaction. It does mean you can't use the Handy app though.

I was given a Bambu Lab A1 for Xmas and just some cheap 250g PLA I was going to order 10 x 1kg PLA & 10 x 1kg PetG this week from Bambu. Although I'm new to 3D printing I love it and was already thinking about upgrading to a P1S or X1C so I can try other types of fimaments. Having read about these changes and now watched this video. I have decieded to hold of buying from Bambu and if I look to upgrade my printer it is unlikley to be from Bambu. One of the reasons I don't by Apple products is due to their walled garden approch So Bambu you have at least for now lost 20kg sales of filament and I'm unlikley to upgrade to any of your other printers.
