I always used to find myself singing 'Smith & Jones, you've been gone too long', at the time Smith & Jones was on the telly I think.

I was waiting in A&E with a dislocated jaw a few years back, it was getting more painful by the minute and I couldn't shut my mouth or talk. My best friend was sat with me waiting for my name to be called when over the tannoy the nurse called for "Nathan Jones". My friend and I looked at eachother, and even with a dislocated jaw I laughed so much I nearly cried.

I think the Supremes' version (the original by Jean Terrell, Cindy Birdsong, and Mary Wilson) of Nathan Jones is a soul/R&B Classic, right up there with the best songs of the 70s...as per normal in the industry, once a group has been around for a long time, and they had by then, radio and the public pays a lot less attention, but the Supremes version was hot regardless... I like the Bananarama version as well, but I am partial to the original, just because I am!!...lol

Ha ha, what a cool story! I am a Nathan (but not Jones). There was a Nathan Jones who started at my school not long after this was released as a single.

@sadiq2008 i agree with your last comment. bananarama really only had one huge selling album and i think they may have sold well in the 80's but to call them the greatest girl group in history is really pushing it IMO. i did love them at the time they were making it big...my fave song of theirs is still cruel summer. cheers.

Nice cover this. Bit surprised it didn't do better.

@troystar The song was actually top 20 hit for the Supremes in 1971. It wasn't because Diana Ross was not on it. In fact, the Supremes had more higher charting singles than Diana Ross did in the early 70's.

@sadiq2008 they only tour here in australia as a package with others. if they're only on for half an hour...then good.

There is a big difference between a number one single in the UK and the USA...The UK singles chart is 100% based on sales, whereas the USA it is a mixture of sales and radio airplay, so even though the Supremes may have had more number 1 singles, it doesnt mean they sold more records. Even though this is a cover, Bananarama wrote most of their own stuff and own publishing rights on their music, Supremes never..(i do like supremes/Ross, btw) but thats a fact
@wonderboyjoy13 жыл бұрын
@sadiq2008 the supremes had 12 USA number ones. they lasted from 1961 until 1977. that was a pretty good run i would say. diana, lead singer of the supremes still had hits in the UK until 2004. when was bananaramas last top 5 hit? just sayin.

Not many (if any) "girl group" have the control over their careers that the Nanas have, They pretty much wrote and called the shots from the begining, and even when they joined the SAW hit factory, they werent puppets, and continued to write (and own) their own music.
@wonderboyjoy13 жыл бұрын
@troystar i know and i agree. but i still think it sounded better back in 86 when the whole saw thing was happening. now i listen to it i think it sounds piddly. each to his/her own though. cheers.

@MrJtvander i am very familiar with both groups. i have the bananarama album this is is on. they are souless. okay to dance to back in the 8o's but really just fluff SAW. could have been any girls singing this in this style.

They recorfrf this because they had become the most successful girl group since the Supremes. This when sung by the Supremes was in the earky 70s by that time Diana Ross had left the Supremes. I did like this version when it came out but now I don'y like it,the Sumpreme original I do still like!

Diana Ross never sang on supremes version of this song, and it could be aruged that after she left the supremes, they two became any three girls. The supremes were on a "salary" and never really owned their careers.

what supremes songs do you know anyway? Banarama was one of the the best bands of the 80s. So Shut it

ivana havitoff and wonderboyjoy, can you both just hug and make up please. Bananarama would hate to see you both arguing like this. The Supremes and Bananarama were both class. Just agree to disagree......
