They look fantastic nigel. How long did they last? I'm just about running out of space for wagons now. I'll probably get some heljan 35t tanks but that will have to be it

Forgot to mention that doh! I think the only ones that made it into the 1970’s were BR standards. As traffic moved to road transportation these diag 1/246 vans were the last in revenue earning service. A few lasted until ‘79 and maybe early 1980. Quite a lot found use as barrier wagons for a while but all were gone by 83? Some lingered on until the late 80’s as stores vans on depots and sidings.

Good job as ever Nigel, I continue to be inspired by your weathering techniques and all the little details that really make a difference, thanks for sharing.

That mixed rake looks class! It’s always a good project to bring older tooling back into the fray

"Tra la la. tra la lal la" You've got the Banana Splits song playing in my head now. It's probably as old as the tooling for those wagons. The finished vans look pretty good to me Nigel. I'm a devotee of repurposing and improving older models so this was an awesome bit of work. Cheers!

I really enjoyed that and I'm looking forward to your next one regarding TPO's and the kind and number of vehicles that made up a typical train.

Excellent video of the BR plywood 1/246 Banana van Nigel, thank you. As a fan of Banana vans I have done a few myself. So next please make the Ratio PC541 BR Banana van to diag 1/242 . This is easy to convert to 1/243, or 1/244 and adds some variety to your rake, whilst not scaling the cost heights of Accurascale. You'll have all the information in your excellent rolling stock library. Someone makes Geest, or Fyffes scale posters to stick on the van sides, depending on which port they landed, and to which ripening depot they were going to. There are some interesting threads on these vans on RMWeb. Oxford make an ex-GER Banana van in BR Bauxite, I've yet to see one in my old books of Banana trains leaving Southampton docks so haven't invested in one yet. I converted a Bachmann SR even plank box van into a SR 10T Banana van to diag 1479. Upon completion Accurascale announced their production of 1478 and 1479 diagram vans..... which I still bought.

Stunning Results 🙌🏻 that Not every modeller is capable of achieving, but Personally at such a reasonable Price I would be tempted to learn as opposed to fork out £85 for three wagons! - I like seeking out older wagons, as you did with the Wrenn, and Refinish/Refurbish to an Nice Standard which Suits my Satisfaction levels & Parsimonious Nature 😉😁

I did not realize that the flat sides were plywood. I thought they were metal. Seen them in the sixties delivering actual Bananas to the Barras Wholesale Market in Coventry.

Good evening Mr train man 😀 That was a great build and shows how can make a realistic banana 🍌 van cheaper than the RTR model but knowing you’ve done a good job 👍🏻

They are older than forty years, more like sixty years old being tooled by Hornby dublo.
