The fact that Beethoven was completely deaf by the time he composed this, the final and most famous movement in his renowned 9th Symphony, is beyond incredible. He wrote "Ode to Joy" to accompany the words of a poem by the same name by the German poet and philosopher, Friedrich Schiller. It's a lyrical paean to the miracle of brotherhood, and what happiness can spark when mankind gathers as brothers under the sheltering wings of joy. My thanks to the conductor, the wonderful Rubén Gimeno, and all the musicians and singers who made this happen. I plan to watch this as my daily "happiness pill" from now on.
@patsmith75325 жыл бұрын
@@imac610 , I think you are right. I believe that is probably exactly how Beethoven did it. He had to have heard all the instruments in his head in order to compose such a beautiful piece, with such dramatic changes in mood and pacing building to that glorious finale.
@pmacc35575 жыл бұрын
stupid uneducated question: are conductors necessary? i ask with respect.
@patsmith75325 жыл бұрын
@@pmacc3557 , I am not a musician but used to sing in a choir and we would have been lost without our conductor. He kept everyone on the beat, let us know when to sing softly and when to belt it out...he really controlled everything about the performance and brought out our best. Think about what an orchestra is...dozens of people seated in a semi-circle playing many different types of instruments arranged in groups...brass, strings, rhythm...and often, as in this case, voices as well. They cannot all see each other, so without a conductor, even though they all have the same music, how would they know when to start? How could they all rise to a crescendo in unison if they were not following the rhythmic motion of a conductor's arms? I know that to some, conductors just look like a guy waving his arms around, but they are so much more than that. Think of them as the traffic cop at a busy intersection without lights. They control the flow of traffic with their arms and whistles in much the same way that a conductor controls the flow of music (minus the whistle, of course.) Without a conductor, an orchestra would not sound nearly so pleasing, melodic or synchronous.

"Si ajuntar-se els cors demanen, que un mal vent va separant, tots els homes s’agermanen on tes ales van tocant." If they were truly spontaneous, they would never happen since by definition, spontaneity requires a lack of premeditation. 50 people don't just show up in a public space and decide to dance to Beyonce without first communicating the idea to each other. Same as you... I feel connected to the crowd, the children mimicking the conductor, the musicians, and especially the guy mouthing a genuine "WOW" in response to the final outbreak of the full chorus. May God bless the Spanish people that showed their finest quality in this one-of-a-kind video.

I write this on May 7, 2020. Today is the anniversary of the world premiere of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (1824, Vienna). I have always loved this video, but it seems particularly poignant and relevant in these difficult times. I truly hope this kind of street life--full of innocence, wonder, exuberance and...well...joy--can return to Sabadell and everywhere else in the world.

This made me cry. I hope the day comes again where we can be together in public spaces to witness beautiful music that showcases what humans can do when they come together. My favourite part was the group eating a meal who left the table so fast when they heard the violins! I miss they joy and spontaneity I saw on their faces, I can’t remember the last time I saw that most human reaction. 🥺

@tomten86637 жыл бұрын
O , mocht u willen weten wie Amira Willighagen is .

I don't care that it's an ad I don't care that only few know the lyrics Fact is this piece of music alone being chosen as european hymn is one of the best decisions out of many europe ever made. It blows any national anthem out of the water being so epic. Not even the star spangled banner nor the marseillaise come up to it's knees of epicness

ALL of life is politics. Beethoven and Mozart were immersed in post-Napoleonic European politics. Wake up,smell the coffee and wish and pray that the despicable disgraceful shameless tone deaf demagogues Messrs Donald Trump and Nigel Farage, just like Hitler's Mum way back in 1889, had had abortions.Vote Hillary and save the planet FFS please Yank cousins.

You are very weird. All of life is not politics, except for those who choose to make it everything. And people like that will always be unhappy, just like the people who choose to make everything a conspiracy. This is about art and music and beauty and joy; it has NOTHING to do w/ politics except to people like you.
