Over ten years as a band. No doubt you will read about how good they are and how they don't have a bad song in their library of music. Truth is there is no praise that gives them enough credit. They are simply that good and unique.

The band formed organically in 2013 as the brainchild of the rhythm guitarist Miku, who had worked in a maid cafe. Miku recruited Kanami, the lead guitarist, after seeing her videos on KZbin. Kanami recruited Akane, the drummer, who she had worked with before. Akane recruited MISA, the bassist, who she had attended the Tokyo School of Music with. after two months, Miku realized her voice wasn’t powerful enough for the music they wanted to play and they got their management to find them another singer…. and Saiki came on board. By august 2013, they were in the current configuration and going strong ever since.

At the beginning you were hearing the last notes of their song Play, which is also available on their KZbin Channel. The Ladies took about 5 seconds to walk back to their pedal boards to reset, then launched into Domination. Their concerts are 3-5 songs, a brief break to reset pedal boards, switch out guitars, get a drink to wet their throats, maybe a few seconds of talking, then they launch into the next set of 3-5 songs. Intersperse 2-3 MC portions which includes Miku's Omajinai (Majic Spell) Time, a 10-15 minute stand up, call and response that makes the Ladies Okyuji's (Servings)even more enjoyable and memorable. Now for some more information about the Ladies and the formation of Band-Maid. Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead. Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition. Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition. Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music. Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well) So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance. And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD! ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!! Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan. Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning" On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"... The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited) This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their KZbin channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill. Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid. The song that really highlights the drummer (Akane) is their song "Freedom" also from the same concert this OLV is from, and also available on their channel. The Ladies have OVER 130 songs in their discography, not including alternate versions, with alternate versions they have over 160 songs in their discography. They will be releasing a new album later this summer and you can purchase their 2023 Tour Finale concert which was over 3.5 hours and 33 songs, on both DVD and BluRay. I personally have both and I enjoy it very much. As for the next song, literally just pick ANY song available on their channel, even the ones which don't have an official MV or OLV, which are available under the "Releases" tab on their channel. These Ladies are so good, that we don't NEED a video to really enjoy all of their music.

Can you imagine how the concert will be next month with The Warning opening for them in Japan, Tokyo I believe. That is gonna be one loud concert. 😀 They formed in 2013, same year as The Warning. One of about a bazillion things I love about The Maids is the group was totally organically formed. Miku found Kanami, Kanami knew Akane, Akane knew Misa and then Saiki auditioned (but I THINK Miku had already kind of singled Saiki out). There's a GREAT series of documentary videos that was put together by Ohrenje (YT channel) that features each member. Start with Saiki. Next song? Kobato Miku is so intrinsic to the BM story that her part of the documentary was split into 3 parts. The only bio with more than 1 Parr. She is boss, accountant, paymaster, sole contract negotiator chief lyricists, sings BVs and lead on several songs. The only maid who never leaves stage for breaks. Instead she talks and sometimes walks among crowd making jokes and doing her anime act. She's so endearing and owns the rights to everything. Even when label was going to cancel contract, they were keeping Miku. She refused to change anything. Later she would get revenge. She had a better offer of management from Pony label. A much larger company. Nobody saw this coming except Miku who apparently didn't like old label trying to give her ultimatum.

Well worth watching when you want to learn a bit about the band, and I fully recommend watching them! High quality informative and fun. This was a dominating performance! Having fun and performing at a top level in skill and energy! You should check out "Play", "Freedom" and "Choose Me from this same concert, or serving as the band calls them! Band-Maid's breakthrough "Hit" would be "Thrill", as that song gathered two million views in two weeks and saved the band from being cancelled. They just kept progressing with their sound since then, getting better and better! They have all the original members and are great friends on and of stage. The skills these ladies exhibit are off the charts! They write their own music or almost all of it since the song "Alone" was allowed onto a album. A great band, Po!

"KZbinr begging stuff"....LOL!! Band-Maid is total grass roots, started by Miku (rhythm guitar) a former Maid Cafe and Japanese Idol. Don't forget "Freedom" from the same concert....it'll scratch your drummer itch. When they gather around Akane (drummer) they are playing a Japanese game called Hengao (hen-gow) the art of making faces and they try to crack each other up during performances.......the girls are so funny on and off stage.

Another banger. Love them! I like the unique mix of Japanese and English lyrics too. I remember another Japanese Heavy Metal band from the 80's called Vow Wow who sung in English. I guess it's probably the only way to for a Japanese band to get a foothold with Western audiences.

Miku found Kanami, Kanami found Akane, Akane found Misa and Saiki was brought in last just because Miku felt her voice wasn't strong enough and she wanted a better vocalist for the band. There is a series of very interesting videos about each member of the band if you want to find out a lot of interesting stuff. I think they start with Misa (bass). Watch HATE? live from Yokahama Arena if you want to see something that will really get you reeling. There are a bunch of mind boggling liver performances and NO GOD really showcases Misa's talents as a bass player. As I always say: BEST ROCK BAND ON THE PLANET.

You can tell by the audience participation that they were already huge by this point. They formed in 2013 (started by the rhythm guitarist, who used to work at a Maid Cafe). After a couple of years they were still fairly small and getting a bit discouraged. Then their music video for "Thrill" got promoted by an internet radio station in 2015. The video went viral (over 1 million views in a short time) and they were instant big hits internationally. It's been up hill ever since. Their songs have been used in anime and movies. They've opened for bands like Guns 'n Roses. Played at major festivals, and done international tours.

Miku "Rhythm Guitar/Backing vocals" once worked in a traditional Japanese Maid Cafe. She found Kanami (Lead Guitar) online viewing some of her posted musical projects. Contacted her got her onboard, and Kanami knew of Akane (Drummer) as they worked together on some of Kanami's online projects. Once she was onboard Akane knew MISA (Base Guitar) all the way back from Music school. After getting together it became evident that Miku's voice was not strong enough to lead on this style of rock music, so they auditioned and with help from their label found Saiki (Lead vocals). Miku stepped back to take the role of backing vocals.

No, they were not “put together by a label.” Band-Maid are self-made. They had to fight their original record company to play the style they wanted to play. For two years, the record company rejected every song written by the lead guitarist Kanami, who now leads all of their song-writing, production work and rehearsals (with input from the others on their own instrumental parts and lyrics from a Miku). And now they are with a bigger record company. This is what talent, loving teamwork, and ten years of very hard work by five Japanese girls with a dream can achieve. They are inspirational. ❤🕊❤🌊❤🦍❤🥷❤👸🏻

As im sure half the comments bellow say - they formed themselves - The idea for the band was Miku's the little rythmn guitarist / 2nd vocals / lyricist / pigeon :) She reruited one of them then they recruited one more, who recruited one more :) Only Saiki the main singer was found by management on request, after theyd been together like less than a month and performed 1 or 2 small gigs when Miku decided they needed a different singer than her, and she went on to learn guitar on the job to add more to the band lol. They have all been together since- and except in their early days at a different label, they they write all their own music for the last 6 or 7 years or whatever its been. They are absolutely NOT a studio band- they made themselves, the image is their idea, the music is wrote and performed by them - they are all amazing musicians :) p.s They are older than you probably think! They were in their early to mid 20s when formed but by the time of this performance they are 25-28ish? And by now, even the youngest of them is 30.

Best band on the planet! Great reaction….no label can put a band this good together. In fact, they were about to be dropped if their “Thrill” video didn’t go nuclear. These ladies are the greatest band in rock history. And I go back to the Van Halen, Rush and Led Zepplin days. 4:10 Three guitarist Maids were huddling around the drummer. This is a kind of a live stage ritual to them. What they were doing was showing funny faces to the drummer so that she would crack up and miss a beat or two. But, as far as I know, they've never succeeded so far. The drummer, Akane, on the other hand, successfully made the lead singer Saiki laugh by showing her funny face and funny moves when they played the song "PLAY". For the drummer, watch "Freedom" official live video. The band was founded by the rhythm guitarist -- it was her dream band. She recruited the lead guitarist, who brought in the drummer, who brought in the bassist. Then they auditioned for the vocalist. The rhythm guitarist had worked in a maid cafe and really liked the frilly costumes, but also the customer engagement. She has one or more sessions each concert where she talks to the crowd as though they were customers at a maid cafe ("masters and princesses") and gets them to chant cute spells -- "Moe Moe" and "Kyun Kyun" -- and also "We love Band-Maid". She says these sessions are "heart to heart". She is a good stand-up comic and these sessions are very popular. She wanted the audience to see the cute maid costumes and expect soft J-Pop ... and then the first hard rock chord would hit them like a shock. The band love to see a new audience react with surprise when they start playing. But also, they have a strong sense of serving their fans with the finest music they can provide -- no ego, just high standards for themselves and a lot of hard work.

This was the one that I recommended you watch first, as it was the one that got me hooked. I see it got you too....even though you already kinda knew what to expect. 😀 Watch the bassist (MISA)'s fingers when she's playing the solo... she plays first with the pick, then tucks it up out of the way with her finger to play some 'slap bass' then switches back to the pick....all so smoothly that it is so easy to miss. "Freedom" (live) would probably be a good place to go next but you really can't go wrong with anything from their official channel. The live stuff does tend to have extra solos etc. (I have another recommendation for you to check out - Babymetal & Electric Callboy "Ratatata".)

They are 100% organicaly grown. the band founder Miku(rhythm guitar/ backing and lead vocals) had won an Idol contest in Japan beating out 2600 contestants. the prize was to form an Idol band and release some music. less than a year later Miku left the Idol group saying she wanted to play more hard music, she approached management with the idea of forming a rock band dressed as maids(the gap, no one expects such hard music from cute maids). Miku had worked in a famous Maid cafe in Akihabara, Tokyo. she found the lead guitarist Kanami on YT or a Japanese version of it and asked her to join. Kanami had a friend who was a drummer that had done drums for Kanami's demo music, so Akane joined. Akane had a friend that plays bass that she met at Tokyo School of Music and Invited MISA to join. thats it the band was formed...but wait, there's more after playing a couple of shows as a 4 piece band they decided to bring in another singer more suited to a harder rock sound and they auditioned Saiki. Now 11 years later they are best friends and have a desire to have their music heard all over the world(World Domination) but still there is more...Miku is actually an 810 year old small pigeon(according to her) and say's Po after every sentence or in reply as an affirmative. SUper fun band that started out as 4 super shy girls and 1 extrovert(Miku) and are now mature incredible musicians. Kanami writes the music and is quite possibly the most prolific writer since McCartney/Lennon or Bernie Taupin/Elton John she has written roughly 80 songs since her first song accepted by management in 2016. Miku is the main lyricist with contributions from Saiki on many songs. loved your reaction cheers

If you really want to know the story of Band-Maid, you should look up the seven part mini- series on the band. The documentary series created by a KZbinr Ohrenje is incredibly well done and chronicles the group's creating and biography on each of the members. The seven part documentary of the five Maids was done because Miku Kobato, the rhythm guitarist, backup vocalist, and chief lyricist of the group, is the founder of the group has three of the 30 minute segments telling her story and how the band came about. It will be well worth your while to view the series and share it with your subscribers.

Miku is the one who put the band together and the concept is her idea, she is the rhythm guitarist and the one who writes the lyrics. Kanami is the lead guitarist and writes all of this music for all but the first couple of albums. Misa is the bass player and Akane is the drummer, all three of them are top tier musicians. Saiki is the singer, Miku chose her because her own voice really doesnt fit hard rock like Saiki's voice does. I have seen them live myself and that is how they play, it is real that is why so many of their videos are live concerts because they dont really need MVs though they do have MVs which are worth watching as well. Miku is the one who went through the Jpop idol training and herself was working in a maid cafe in japan when she came up with the idea of maids playing hard rock music. Miku actually formed a second group of just herself and some dudes, that group is Cluppo, whole story behind the pidgeon thing, she mainly does pop rock and pop there, basically songs that dont really fit band maid style. Band Maid is so good they brought be back to hard rock, a genre I gave up on back in the late 80s because those bands really were not as good as people think and rock through the 90s and early 2000s just wasnt good, then Band Maid came along. They really have their own sound and the fact they can actually play live is the best part, far too many bands really cant play live.

Welcome back to the BandMaid experience. The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts: •Bass solos are more likely to happen than not •Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be •Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen. •Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre! •You like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that. •April Fools Day 2019 As a joke they recorded a redo of Secret my Lips with traditional instruments and with lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. MV is stunningly beautiful. •The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/lead singer steps back to make way for a new more hard rock vocalist. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors. Oh yeah she has her own signature model guitar from Zematis (after playing less than 10 yrs) •There is no "I" in BANDMAID. Well ok there is one "I" but my point is the songs are written by BandMaid. Not just Kanami Tono. The highly innovative bass and drum lines are created by Akane and MISA. There are no George songs and John&Paul songs. There are only BandMaid songs. •10 plus years with the same line up. Think about that. •More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole. •Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics. •Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's. •As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both. •Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese.Most songs are full of joy as well. •They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other. •Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.

This song/video is often used as an introduction to Band-Maid. One thing about Band-Maid is that they have their own sound. They don’t sound like anyone else even when there are times when you can hear an influence from another band or musician. Being influenced is not the same as copying. I came across them in 2018 and was immediately a fan. Even though I’m a classically trained musician I have my music roots in 60’s and 70’s rock and have never let that go. Oh, I should mention I play the drums! 😊❤😉
