This is an absolutely killer track! The outifts are there for a couple of reasons, one is to remind Miku (Rythm guitarist and founder of the band) where she came from (worked in a maid cafe for a long time) and where she may return to should BAND-MAID fail. The second reason is to have a stark contrast between the sound they produce and their appearance.

There is actually a heavier song just rushed into the studio for the upcoming album Conqueror. And that is Dilemma. Kanami says so. This tune is based on a 2008 Japanese horror movie Ren-ne wherein the serial killer films his victims deaths in 8mm to be examined later for signs of the endless cycle of death and rebirth. Worthy of Ozzy, huh? Miku lyrics. Kanami music.

The maid theme is part of Japanese entertainment culture. It appears throughout manga and anime and the cafes in Akihabara are a reflection of that. They are used to signify that a person is wealthy and can afford to have maids, or more likely, a symbol of extreme cuteness. I am going to have to go with the latter on this one.
@Hedgehog1039

Incorrect, It is like that for two reasons, to remind Miku (rythm guitar) where she came from - and may return if it didn't take off - as well as being a stark contrast with the music.

@@Hedgehog1039 And how does that make my generalization incorrect?
@johnmatthew102
@johnmatthew102 4 жыл бұрын
@@Hedgehog1039 I knew you wouldn't answer me. The second part of your comment is accurate, but as for the first part, that's the first I've heard of her wearing the outfit on stage to remind her that she could return whence she came and the shame of that failure, as if the maid costumes were some sort of motivational device for her. Please give us a link to the interview(s) where she says this or at least cite us some quotes. While I'm waiting for that, I'll give you some quotes with citations: Miku in an interview with Hammer magazine: “I used to work in a maid café! I would wear cute uniforms every day and entertain our customers, who we call masters and princesses. At the same time I was really into metal and rock music, and I thought how different the two worlds were. Here I am at work, singing super cute songs to a milkshake - it’s how we make them extra tasty - but on the way home I have my headphones in, blasting Maximum The Hormone. I thought that it would be cool to combine cute uniforms with cool music, so I set about recruiting the members of Band-Maid.” “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!” And some more: Miku in an interview with A-to-J Connections: A-to-J: Can you explain the concept behind BAND-MAID for those that might not be familiar with it? MIKU Kobato: BAND-MAID is a hard rock band that wears cute maid costumes. A-to-J: Your name and image borrow heavily from maids and maid cafes, can you explain a bit about what maid cafe culture is like in Japan and how it ties to your group? MIKU Kobato: Kobato (I) used to work as a maid, and I loved the maid outfits. From there I came up with the idea of having maids within BAND-MAID. I also loved music and being in a band so I thought it would be interesting if both were mixed and I came up with the concept of BAND-MAID, po.
@Hedgehog1039
@Hedgehog1039 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnmatthew102 The generalisation of Japan's culture is correct, however, the theme of that doesn't really play into why BAND-MAID specifically wear them. It is more to do with the contrast and wow factor and bringing Mikus experience forward rather than being part of the overrall machine. The idea obviously stems from her being a part of that but I wouldn't say that is the reason for BAND-MAID in particular having that look.
@Hedgehog1039

@@johnmatthew102 As for not answering, I haven't been on youtube to see your comment, that is all. Perhaps I read too much into it to deduce the first point - but that is the impression I got over the years. That may just be my poor judgement, so that one isn't so set in stone. Apologies for the initial "this is fact" tone my message may have carried.

band was on the verge of calling it, but then the music video for Thrill blew up on the internet. at the time they were still trying to find their sound.. the rest follows from there. from what i've heard, there will be at least one other heavy track on the new album, which is shaping up to be their most varied release to date. one track was produced by Tony Visconti.. apparently he reached out to the band with the offer.. which is wild.. i really would like to know how that transpired. new CD Conqueror pre-order guide: www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/dikuuq/guide_to_where_and_how_to_preorder_any/

That's why I love the video(Thrill). Yes it's basic but it still rocks but at the same time it captures their sound or formula that was theirs that they have used and with them expanding it all to more intricate playing. Especially with Miku getting better and relaxed on every song. I sometimes don't think she gets enough credit on how she realized they needed a stronger singer and she taking a backseat and then agreed to learn how to play guitar and as mentioned a lot of it on the road.

Amazon's probably your best bet for the cds they have in stock, right now they're offering free shipping on orders over $25. If you can't find it on Amazon and want to avoid international shipping fees Yesasia.com offers free shipping on orders over $39. The albums are generally more expensive than Amazon ($20-27) but the singles are a little bit cheaper ($11-13). Be aware though that if you get one of the albums that come with a dvd (the newer World Domination would be more expensive) they will be region 2 dvds that won't play in the U.S. which is region 1. There are ways around this but you can google fixes for that for a more detailed explanation than I could give.

A better way to describe it (for those who don't know the language) would be "rin-nay"; a key thing about the Japanese language in particular (and Chinese and other Asian languages to some extent or another) is that every syllable is (typically) pronounced individually, even when it blends together when spoken at regular speed in conversation (i.e., Saiki's name sounds like "sigh-key" when spoken at regular speed, but if broken down it would actually be "sah-ee-key"). For a general guide on vowels, a is "ah", e is "ay", i is "ee", o is "oh", u is "oo" (like "boo"). And unlike the very confusing spoken English, Japanese vowels don't really change sounds (in English, similarly spelled words cab have drastically different sounds, and vowel placement can also alter sounds). Oddly enough, written Japanese can be very difficult (especially the symbol styling of Kana and Kanji), but strangely the pronunciations can (at times) be much simpler than an English equivalent.

Most of the Japanese music industry is still stuck in the 80's. If you look at all the jpop and jrock music is it very 80's ish sounding. Maid cafes (which appears in anime) are a thing in japan mostly because of Otaku culture (Otaku is a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, particularly in anime and manga.) Since Japan"s first heavy metal band X Japan till Band Maid the style is very 80'ish. If you guys don't know who X Japan is you should look it up they are Legends in Japan. I wasn’t going to comment but couldn’t help Myself. Rinne is a BUddhist concept of the cycle of reincarnation... known to most Japanese and used in various media. there may have been a horror movie by that name in the past, but MV aside, this song most definitely IS NOT about a horror movie or a gruesome story. Please don’t link the 2. The term “Rinne” or “Rinne tensei” can be found in MANY fictional stories. For example the Rinne-Gan from the internationally famous manga/anime Naruto.

No problem. It’s definitely difficult when we can’t understand most of the lyrics. I’m sure I don’t have it 100% right but the video aside listening to some of the lyrics and knowing the girls, it wouldn’t be about some gruesome horror movie. Miku’s lyrics are usually quite good and clever. Some Japanese fans are linking Rinne and endless story. Both being 2 opposite sides of endlessness. Log hit and dark. Almost everything about both songs are opposites of each other including the actual MV style. Kanami supposedly said the 2 songs are tied together... I can’t find the tweet or interview but... I can see how that might be true. Kanami’s songs and Miku’s lyrics are always quite clever and amazing.

Stephen Chigwidden I don’t think you will have to worry about that. Lol. I know there are a lot of legit fans doing videos but there are way more of them that are just in it to be popular. We aren’t perfect by a long shot but we never try to be something we aren’t and will only do metal/hard rock related videos period. We will never cross over to rap or pop music just to get more subs or views. I admit when I don’t like something and understand when others don’t like something that I do. We catch shit about not liking something but I’m sure if I threw a song back at them that they didn’t like they would hesitate telling me it sucks. We always try to give something a chance and I some cases a few chances. Lol. That’s why we have all the genres and sub genres that we have. I don’t mind negative feedback as long as its legit. Miku wrights most of the lyrics. Kanami writes most of the music, but Akane (Ah-Ka-Nay) and MISA write their own parts.

The thing with the maid costumes is the shock value. The concept is to fool the viewer into thinking they're about to listen to some cutesy J-Pop.... and then BANG!! IN YOUR FACE ROCK!! It's all about the contrast between the visual and the sound...... or "The Gap", as they call it. NOW, I have heard you guys say , rather nicely, it's a gimmick, image or shtick........... Yeah, it is. But it's not only Japanese bands that do this.... KISS- with the make-up, Slipknot- the masks, Angus Young- the school boy uniform, Shit, even DEVO with the flower pot hats. It's a visual thing to draw attention to the music. It's to try to set them apart from "the Rest". It drew me. They totally blew my misconception,. That out of the way..... . Kanami (the lead guitarist) writes the music, then consults with MISA (Bass) and Akane (drums)....for the .bass lines and drum patterns. Miku, (the rhythm guitarist/ singe)r,b writes the lyrics/theme, then consults with Saiki (vocals) , and if there is a deadlock in how a song should be between Miku, Kanami, Misa and Akane..... then Saiki has the end vote. One thing I have learn't with these ladies is that there is ALWAYS a method to their madness.

That was after failing at breaking into JPOP with her first group. So she decided to do it her way instead while employed at Maid Cafés. At that time she did not know how to play an instrument and had zero experience with Western style rock n roll. She did, however, know a certain drummer by the name of Akane Hirose. Lucky us.

FYI guys...the founding member of this band, Miku, used to work at a maid cafe so she came up with the maid theme for the band. If you aren't aware of the maid subculture, check it out. You can find tons of videos on "maid cafes" in Japan.

Wow, you mentioned Anthem. They are a well organized group but never really made it big. A few of my friends and I met these guys in a small live house in Yokohama just before they released their first album sometime in the 80's. They were down to earth and cool as heck and since then sort of kept up with them but regretfully not as much as I should have. But hats off to you for even mentioning them. Earthshaker is another Japanese band you may want to check out. Their sound is crisp and flawless. Hamada Mari is worth checking out as well. Just to mention a few... Goodluck guys! Love you channel. You have a new subscriber.

@@errorys4183 fact. And they have zero in common besides being Japanese. I saw Babymetal on October 13th and they were entertaining and very good. Just not in Band-Maid's class either in talent or charisma. Band-Maid is in every single sense of the word a rock band. Babymetal would make a hell of a Las Vegas floor show. They should even have a residency there.

First time watching you guys, but you all, before the video, as I'm writing this before you ever get to the music, are totally butchering (hence, I get the plastic butcher's knife) the girl's names and pretty much everything about the girls!!! Miku is rhythm guitarist, and write's the majority of the music, lyrics foremost. The actual music is more of a group effort....please look up their names pronunciations before going live, and know the song title please!!! Ok, I'll continue the video further, though I hope it gets better.
