I review, breakdown and explain Band of Brothers Episode 4. I discuss the fourth episode in the HBO show from 2001 which focussed on Bull, Denver Randleman from Easy Company in the 101st Airborne Division as they tackled Operation Market Garden in Holland. I react to the best moments in the episode which was titled Replacements whilst comparing it to the real events which was considered a failure. I provide an in-depth recap and my reaction to the full episode.

Now, BOB is my favourite series of all time, I don't think there's an episode that isn't great but this episode for me is my least favourite. Cobb annoys me. Also I don't think there's enough focus on Market Garden because it was a huge failure and in the whole, series such as this only focus on the successes. I feel I'm being very critical however but it just wasn't for me

I met Michael Cudlitz at a Walking Dead convention. Super Nice, guy, most people wanted to talk to him about Walking Dead, but when he found out I was a fan of both Southland and Band of Brothers, he talked to me for about 10 minutes. He said there were a lot of Easy Company veterans still alive, and the actors were just in awe of them, especially Dick Winters. No one called him Dick, they either called him Major or Sir. I asked him about the Real Bull Randleman and Michael said he was terrified of that old man because Randleman told him if he did not do a good job playing him, he would kick Michael's ass. And Michael said he could probably do it. But, after the Show, Michael and the real Bull became very good friends.

Excellent as always. I think the great aspect of Episode 4 is that it shows failure. We are so used to seeing Easy company and their comrades advancing, doing great things. Then, suddenly they are up against equals and have to retreat

Except the day's fighting was actually a success for the British tanks and US paras. The day's objective was to remove Panzer Brigade 107 from threatening the Bailey Bridge at Son and cutting Hell's Highway. This was achieved by the end of the day. Panzer Brigade 107 had to retreat from Nuenen to Helmond and was no longer a threat to the Eindhoven sector. It was a flank protection operation. They weren't trying to move to Arnhem. The job of the 44th Royal Tank Regiment and Easy Company was to protect the flank in the Eindhoven sector. This they did.

05:33 Market Garden is NOT considered a disaster by historians. It did fail in its most important objective - securing the bridge at Arnhem. But it achieved most of its other objectives. It diverted large amounts of German resources from other parts of the western front, keeping them there for the rest of the war. Eisenhower refered to it as unlucky - foiled by the weather. In fact it was the off-chance that a German field marshal (Model) was convalescing in the area which led to the failure at Arnhem - he was high-ranking enough to get major reinforcements to the town within two days.
@johnharris6655

It also diverted resources away from Patton who was driving into Germany.
@CzechImp
@CzechImp 2 ай бұрын
There is also the counter-argument that if the Americans had put more resources into Market Garden then it would have been an overwhelming success. But this comes down to the major debate about which strategy was best. The British (i.e. Monty) wanted a concerted push straight into Germany and onto Berlin (something the Soviets were also keen on). The Americans (i.e. Eisenhower) wanted a ''broad front'', slowly advancing across France and into Germany. Patton's Third Army had already run out of fuel; yes, they could have had some of what went to Market Garden but Patton later showed at Metz that he was not capable of leading a real drive into Germany.@@johnharris6655
@lyndoncmp5751

@johnharris6655 Hollywood myth. Patton was already stalled and going nowhere before Market Garden was even planned. He'd been failing to take Metz since September 6th. Patton failed for nearly 4 months in the Lorraine, suffering nearly 55,000 battle casualties for nothing of any real strategic importance gained. If anything, the US 1st Army was given priority within the US 12th Army Group for autumn 1944 with its Hurtgen Forest, Aachen and Operation Queen campaigns. Market Garden was given priority for about a week in September. The Americans were then given priority all through October, November and December...... and did no better.
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 2 ай бұрын
Yes, you'd think that all those German units, especially armour, diverted to fight Market Garden would have made things easier for the Americans to take Aachen quickly and move beyond it. It didnt though. The Americans struggled. Had Eisenhower put on a large diversionary attack towards Aachen at the same time as Market Garden then the Germans would have been in a quandary. They couldn't have stopped both attacks. Instead, however, Eisenhower allowed an attack into the Hurtgen Forest to begin and for Patton to continue his folly in the Lorraine.

The biggest problem with your statement is that to become a successful operation the Arnhem bridge needed to be conquered. Now the Allies held an area leading to nowhere. Montgomery said it was 90% successful. It is seen as to lessen the pain of failure. If it was about territory he was right. But the goal was Arnhem bridge to get into Germany, and around the Ruhr defences.

The challenge of replacements fitting in is one of the underlying themes in the 1949 movie "Battleground" which covers the 101st at Bastogne. Fresh faced Marshall Thompson tries desperately to fit in amongst veterans of Normandy and Holland. Like "Band of Brothers" it was made with the close cooperation of Airborne veterans. Consequently, it is remarkably realistic, despite being made in a refrigerated studio soundstage.

Cobb was just a prick. Every company has at least one like him. The replacements had not jumped into “combat” before. They were all parachute qualified. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (two levels higher) lost a total of 180 men. In general, a full strength infantry company does not have 180 men assigned.

The end of this episode is a misrepresentation of reality. It shows Panzer Brigade 107 victorious and on the advance from Nuenen. In reality the day's fighting was a success for the British tank units (44th Royal Tank Regiment and 15/19th Hussars) and the 101st Airborne. Panzer Brigade 107 was forced to retreat from Nuenen to Helmond and by the end of the same day (September 20th) was removed as a threat to the Eindhoven sector/Bailey Bridge at Son and Hells Highway was kept moving. You wouldn't know this by watching Episode 4.

Winters, Spiers, Welsh and Nixon were all 90 day wonders. Officers who got a quick lesson at OTC and sent into combat. Lt. Jones spent 4 years at West Point learning to be an officer, but it was Jones who was transferred to battalion headquarters. Given they were promoting men like Lipton to officers, why not keep the West Pointer as a platoon leader where he was needed the most.

Because he was not a proven or experienced combat leader. And the senior leaders in the American army were focusing on their plans for after the war. He got his brief moment on the line and then was promptly transferred to the battalion headquarters to serve as an assistant staff officer. They were playing the long game. And the non-professional Army did what it has always done. Fight and win our Nation’s wars.

Dropping and capturing bridges worked on DDay. It’s just a pity the planners at 1st Allied Airborne Army didn’t apply the lessons of DDay or viewed the dropping of the airborne troops seen as nothing more than a transport operation and not the surprise assault that it was. The ground part of the operation worked until the tanks got to Nijmegen and found the bridge still in enemy hands.

Market Garden was NOT a failure. It achieved most of its objectives and kept large numbers of Germans away from the rest of the western front. Failing to hole the bridge in Arnhem was the only part of the plan that did not work. That was partly down to the weather holding up American support (as Eisenhower himself said after the war). But the main reason was Field Marshal Model coincindently being in the area - he was high-ranking enough to order immediately, massive German reinforcements. Without his presence the British paras would have held the bridge for days.

Market Garden was 90% successful and was actually the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945 period. Nearly 100km of German held ground taken in just 3 days. The idea was sound. Everyone of note was in favour of it. It could well have worked if it wasn't for the caution of the air commanders Brereton, Williams and Hollinghurst who rejected double missions flown on day one (Brereton and Williams) and wouldn't fly closer to the Arnhem bridge (Hollinghurst).

There was a bit of artistic license taken with the chocolate bar scene. If you read Webster's book: Parachute Infantry: An American Paratrooper's Memoir of D-Day and the Fall of the Third Reich, you'll read that a Dutch father asked him for some chocolate to take to his son, who had never tasted it before, but was not at that particular farmhouse.. Not trying to be overly critical, just pointing it out some trivia.

The Narrator said one thing at the end (16:08 mark) that keeps annoying me, it was a failure in the intelligence. I wrote a paper on Market Garden. No, intelligence didn't fail. Monty's ego overode the intelligence (including imagery) outlaying German positions, armor, and artillery that Monty flat out ignored. FM Montgomery is the reason the operation failed and it's assessed had his wants and directives been ignored, the war could have ended by Christmas, but Ike had to appease him in order to play nice, something that really annoyed Patton.
@jamesomaha5330
@jamesomaha5330 Ай бұрын
The intelligence missed to rely the information of the the remains of 2 German panzer divisions, and a SS nco training unit at Wolfheze, and a HQ of Model. As general Urquhart and staff were not privileged to receive the enigma messages regarding the placement of these units. The Dutch resistance reports could and should have reported. Frost said after the war, we still would have gone to Arnhem if we knew about the SS units but we would have taken more anti-tank weapons. And probably other battalions would have not tried to occupy the north side of Arnhem but would be send in support of the bridge . General Browning ignored a lot of the presented information, also used a large amount of gliders/ tow aircraft to transport his HQ to Nijmegen on the first day, instead the other half of the South Staffordshire regiment. These had to wait until the 2nd day when they could have made a huge difference in the 1st day. The fact is that Montgomery contrary to other operations hardly got involved in the planning. When XXX corps arrived at Nijmegen the bridge was still in German hands. The 82nd should already be in control, that was not the fault of Montgomery. That was the last day they could have reached Arnhem. During the night the Germans managed to build up enough defences to block the road effectively.

@@tonyf.9806 That glider that crashed was ab Waco glider. It could be an American or a British officer as part of Brownings HQ was transported by Waco. The German report detailing it seems that it was not in full details. Just the general outlines of the operation . The German intelligence very soon had an overal picture as they had reports of the drop and landing zones. Also the fact that these were being defended by allied troops they figured out that other landings were going to take place. That the landings on several drop and lang zones did not took place at stated times, because of weather, made them several if them sceptical if this plan might be misleading them . The plan was filed by them, but many documents got lost / destroyed after their surrender. The plan was based on an earlier plan, to be executed by just 1st airborne. Many of the British airborne officers were relieved it was stopped. It was rushed indeed but the enormous scale the way it was executed was almost a miracle.

This episode is the only episode with a very significant inexplicable historical error. All other errors or omissions can be explained expect the ridiculously stupid part where Martin talks to the British tank commander and he explains why he cannot engage. No such policy ever existed in 30 Corps, such a idiotic idea would have died immediately after being suggested. They were the best of the whole British Army (led by an aggressive Irish general) with the most success and experience of the whole Market-Garden campaign by a large margin. The show effectively blames the British for the retreat when in reality the Germans got lucky and the 101st failed to counter their moves effectively in the short term. The only reason the operation failed was actually due to the 82 Airborne crapping the bed just north of the 101st. So there was no need to paint anyone as if anyone conducted themselves poorly in this particular sector but the filmmakers are notorious for anti-British bias so they had to once again rewrite history to throw shade at the British for no narrative reason, or historical reason. (Tom Hanks & Steven Spielberg also throw shade at the British for no reason in Saving Private Ryan, and Masters of the Air)
