The best lesson in leadership I ever got was when the Brigade Commander called in to address our junior staff course on the first day. After a few anecdotes, he literally took out a cigarette packet, on which he'd scribbled a few notes. Basically, he said, military leadership comes down to two things; complete the mission, and look after your people. The trick, he said, was knowing which of the two took priority, and no course or class could ever teach you that. Only experience could. That's the essential skill that Winters had.

GK is an underrated series. The former Rolling Stone author was a lib who hated the military, but after spending time with them in the trenches, looked at them as family in the end. Even the anti-American Spanish reporters who accompanied US troops into Baghdad felt respect for them after, and even cried when it was time for them to go back to Spain.

That Enemy building looks like around 100-200 meters from where Winters, Sinks, Nixon and Speirs standing at the same open spot. @@robertmorris8997 Greece tends to refrain from participating in operations that involve direct offensive actions against other nations. We provided support such as Logistics during Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom or EOD in Afghanistan. Very rare incidents happened that required show of force in almost any situation. So, very few Army staff engaged in real action and usually that was on voluntary terms. Last time Greece used an expeditionary force to actively engage in operations, was in Korea. My mother's uncle fought there as a Lt. Our economy and society can't spare any more souls, we 're diminishing as a nation. In WWII we lost about 800.000 people to the German, Italian and Bulgarian occupation out of total of 7.300.000 and that's about 11% for the country that gave the first victory of the allies against the Axis (vs Italy). About 14 years ago I was transiting the area south of Brownsville, Texas into Mexico. I was briefed that the Mexican Marines had been ordered in to secure the road as some cartel infighting had stirred up the locals. A checkpoint with zig-zag deflectors had been set up across the road with the last reveal guarded by a quad 50 on a vehicle. Intimidating as hell. Those Marines matched the hardware in mood and purpose. A little farther down that road, we saw the results of their action, four large Suburbans lay smouldering on the sides and shoulder riddled with automatic weapons fire. We left the area with all deliberate speed.

No one would be that stupid. Winters should have received the Medal of Honor on D-Day but politics limited the number of awards and who received them. Court martialing a well known, brave, successful and hugely popular battalion commander who in the most simple terms cancelled a patrol in part because they were being taken off the line in the morning would have been even more insane than the fantasy court martial by Captain Sobel. There was nothing critical about the patrol and one could simply say that Winters used his command perogative to reconsider the need. Colonels seldom get to be colonels by acting like an idiot. He probably would have gone to a regular infantry division commanding draftees who had a fraction of the training the Toccoa men had and no time to train them into shape. Not a good tradeoff

I do like this series, but some things I can't help being a bit annoyed about: at 1:21 a Colonel, two Captains and a Leutenant standing fully exposed to enemy sniper fire. (If the americans had secured the opposing bank then the entire premise of the scene - getting covertly across during the night - would be unneccessary, so it must be assumed the Germans could be present in any of the buildings on the other river bank.) Why would the makers of the series choose to make that kind of depiction?

Not sure when the promotion becomes official but Nixon had Winter’s Oak Leaves in his pocket at the time of that scene. Bump that up to a Major.

While not down to the tiniest detail accurate there’s a very good chance this is how the scene actually played out. I could see it being pretty accurate as Winters was obviously alive for the interviews so he probably described this to the producers

Depends on the actual distance (range) between where the officers were standing and any logical spot for a sniper. PLUS, by this time in the war, the Germans were basically all on the defensive. THEY knew the war was almost over; so why risk their lives for an obviously lost cause. Some really young kid (Hitler Youth? might have tried a shot. Or a hard-core SS soldier? But most of them were probably hunkered down during the day; not exposing themselves to sniper or artillery fire.

@@richardeschallert8526there were no Hitlerjugend stationed this far away from Berlin. They were only deployed to fight in the last stand against the USSR, and never armed with rifles strong enough to hit at 300 yards. You can also see the Allied guns pointing at the river, the Germans would risk getting blown away if they opened fire.

I agree with Winters but that's not how I would have played it out IRL. Too many cogs in the machine here that can go wrong or rat them out, esp the cherry lieutenant, who he doesnt know. There is also a possibility that Sink will show up to observe. What I would have done is pulled Martin off to the side and told him to make a show of crossing the river, but only to get out of sight. Then once across, fiddle faddle around on the bank to waste time then cut back across minus the raid. That way Martin and only a few others are wise to it and no one gets drunk and blabs.

Very good point. But I think the point of the scene was to show that Winters cared about his men and was willing to take some heat for them, even if he was a little naive in how he went about it.

What I do not understand, Easy has been blowing through officers to the point they had to make Lipton a Mustang officer. Now Lt. Jones shows up right out of West Point. He has been training to be an officer for 4 years, while everyone else from Winters to Spiers probably had 90 days of OCS making them "90 Day Wonders." Why promote a West Point Grad and send him off to Battalion HQ when he would have been far more useful to Winters has a Platoon leader.

@@jamesveccie So, retaliating against a savage enemy that invades your country, murders 1200 of your citizens and kidnaps another 200 or so is genocide? Then I guess, according to your twisted mind, America's response against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda for the 9/11 attack can also be considered genocide. Also, the native people of the Land of Israel, falsely called "Palestine" by dimwits such as yourself, are the Jews. Arabs are native only to the Arabian peninsula.

@@jamesveccie Firstly, the native people of the Land of Israel, falsely called "Palestine" by half-baked Hamas supporters such as yourself, are the Jews. Arabs are native only to the Arabian Peninsula. Secondly, if a country that retaliates against a savage and ruthless enemy that has invaded its borders, massacred about 1200 of its citizens in methods that would even shame the devil, and kidnapped another 200 or so of its citizens, is committing an act of genocide according to your twisted mind (if you even have such a thing in that thick skull of yours), then Ukraine, the US, the UK, France, Finland and every country in history that has been attacked and invaded is guilty of genocide.
