We're in Normandy taking a look at a few of the spots where some of the men of Easy Company landed and we brought a few artifacts with us from The Gettysburg Museum of History. Enjoy!

Earl McClung was an absolute badass. If you search hard enough you'll fined some interviews of him. He describes landing on that small structure and sliding off of it into some tall weeds that had grown up around it. There were two germans that were firing at the parachute that was hung up on the roof and he was laying in the weeds still in his harness. He had his rifle ready and he was able to kill both germans. Amazing.

check out the "National Collection of Aerial Photography", sortie "US30/4073", Frame 1022... you can see Winter's and the man from F(?) company's discarded parachutes in the same field on D-Day (they are just barely visible as light colored pixels in the preview image, but they are clearly visible if you buy the full resolution image)

My dad flew a glider into Normandy on D-DAY as part of the 82nd airborne-- a squadron went in--ONLY 5 MEN CAME BACK! He always said that one of the biggest reasons for all the crashes and loss of life was that the reconnaissance photos were taken at 12:00pm so no shadows were available to judge the height of the hedgerows --therefore when they went in before 06:00am the gliders crashed into the towering hedgerows 10 to 20 feet high instead of the 2 to 4 feet tall hedges they were expecting.

What an incredibly helpful video. And gorgeous as well. I did think how strange it must have been to be one of the people who found themselves a citizen-soldier dropped in that place, and that was going to be part of their actual life, when there was no reason, growing up, that they ever thought they would experience such things. And you had to get on with it, and not be distracted by how out of the ordinary it all was.

@@TheHistoryUnderground That makes more sense, because from the first second after touching French soil, Winters seems totally in control of every situation, especially knowing where they are. I'm glad he complained about that but in your video you never mention that the show never actually portrayed him as lost, and that it was just in the initial script.

A huge THANK YOU to JD, Erik of the GMOH and all members of your team who prepare and publish these professional-level, incredible tours through history. (I was the viewer who previously asked if you could please show us the location of the bridge/overpass assault against the horse-drawn squad of Wehrmacht soldiers during the opening hours of D-Day. You graciously answered and directed me to this particular video. Thank you again. For anyone who has not seen, my question was in reference to a scene from Episode 2 of BOB, entitled “Day of Days.”) Even having watched every episode of BOB a dozen plus times, reading every single autobiography published in the past ~24 years by individual members of Easy Company, and reading everything the late, great S. Ambrose wrote on Easy, D-Day and WWII more broadly, I still find myself learning new details about the 506th PIR, its actions and accomplishments on D-Day and beyond and how what actually occurred is sometimes a bit different from what was portrayed in the series. I can understand that the writers, directors, producers and actors perhaps had to take some dramatic license for parts of BOB (for many reasons), but learning the more accurate history from you and Erik - on location- is fascinating and a great history lesson. For example, I now know that the bridge/ambush scene didn’t occur at a bridge at all, but at a road junction. Similarly, Episode 2 shows then Lt. Winters appearing to land way out in the middle of nowhere, perhaps on farmed land or pasture in France, when he actually landed on the very edge of Sainte Mère-Église, although apparently still in a field. I would probably never know these details of history if not for your efforts. As for the one Easy Trooper, can you imagine, after training incessantly for ~2 years, that one of the first actions you were forced to take after successfully parachuting (itself by no means guaranteed that night) and landing in a French village loaded with nests of NAZIs would be that you killed an enemy soldier with your combat knife!? I am not a military veteran, but I can only imagine that Trooper’s fear, bravery and determination in doing what he had to. A very personal method of killing. Many thanks. Your students couldn’t have a better history teacher.

In my view of WW1 and WW2 history, June 6, 1944 is the most important day of the 20th century. I celebrate this day each year. Fantastic video, Thank you for putting this together and educating us. I've always been interested in WW2 History, like others, after my grandfathers fought and I'd hear incredible stories. Band of Brothers is also a firm favourite and the stories of the Americans & allies who bravely came to help us all. Thank you for making fantastic content 🙏🏻 I hope too that we will always remain extended bands of brothers 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇺🇸

Thank you JD and Eric. This episode was extremely interesting. Definitely one of my favorites that you’ve done. Nice job with a animated paratrooper on the map. That made it much easier to grasp your location as well as the paratrooper. Keep up the great work!

Just wow. One of my new top 5 favorite episodes. Parachuting animation with locations just superb and fascinating to observe. Great editing with awesomely complementary music/background vibes. Wondering if this was filmed recently with new gear after that terrible theft in Greece? Thank you !
