Although its not a "huge" shock I am actually amazed Robert sounds this good even before Zeppelin. Especially on such a rough demo. He even cuts through the roughness of the edit with the clarity and pitch of his voice. It is basically spectacular. Most artists, even legends, don't sing at the same level in their earlier more unknown years as they do during what most consider the peaks of their careers...but Robert clearly could and did. Just goes to show that he is likely the greatest (or I would say at least most vocally talented) male vocalist in popular music history.

Some people say Plant copied Steve Marriott. There may be similarities, maybe even a little influence. The key to remember is what Plant brings to the table,... the whole package. The vocals, the swagger, the look, the humor, the love and passion for his craft. It far surpasses all other contemporaries. Robert Plant is the ultimate lead singer and is a bonafide Rock God.

Yeah while the Steve Marriott influence and similarity is undeniable, the sheer fact that Plant was able to successfully replicate Marriott's style AND range AND more importantly, bring a hell of a lot of soul to the table, is impressive in its own right. How many must have copied Marriott and crashed and burned, yet Plant was able to successfully rise far and above the sum of his influences.

First time I heard this recording was a big wow. Robert never had the technique or control (IMO) of a F. Mercury, but he had his own phrasing, amazing range, richness, and unbelievable power. Robert was a raw talent that was never really tamed, and we all benefited from it.

@@UlyssesM John never "limited" himself. He fulfilled the feel, power and rhythmic needs of a song beautifully just about every time. He had a lot of technique at the ready but also had the good taste to not overplay. Sometimes it's what you don't play that gives life to a song. John sound pretty solid and engaged here, as do the whole band. Nice guitar solo too.

The prime for his voice was in the early 70's and before. His voice suffered due to over-touring and some throat surgery. But he still found his new voice.

This could have easily evolved into another version of led zeppelin. It's 1/2 led zeppelin before zeppelin. Bonham signature is in full form. Not hard to imagine with a little tweaking this 50% could be brought to full explosive potential.

I think they recorded a few demos in ‘68, but no contract materialized. Only this one and Hey Joe have seen the light of day. Then Page recruited Plant and Bonham to tour as the New Yardbirds in Europe, I think.

Bonham was playing in a few bands, and every time he got with Plant, he came back with little to no money, and his wife told him not to play with Plant anymore. Page brought them back together after meeting Plant, who recommended Bonham, and they went to see him play. (When Page saw Plant live, I'm almost positive Bonham wasn't playing with him). The rest is history
