Does the head J5 Drum major come up with the new routine every year or is that something they Combine ideas for?
@vecarter5692 жыл бұрын
You will notice elements of traditional moves (that have been passed down for decades)...plus each year new elements are added. The mystery each year is seeing what pieces are used...plus any new ideas. The sequences (of those traditional kicks, sideway-marching drills, high steps, mace twirls) are incorporated in new ways and intermixed with the new moves that the latest squad creates. That way, the routine itself remains fresh...and becomes creative and interesting...because both alumni & fans watch to see how they plant in the traditional moves amongst the newest add-on creations. That is also how alumni drum majors, jsettes, & band sections can easily play and perform with ANY current year squads...because all sections of this band teach their traditional cadences/steps/dance-counts as a legacy of the band. Kind of like learning the bones/foundational layouts...and then you expand. The tradition is kept alive throughout the band decades.

@@ocutts6109 None of the above...just a proud alumni (Class of '93) 😊...who has seen a lot of "Get Ready" routines and other traditions! 💙🐯💙 I went to school there during the reign of our longtime beloved Tiger mascot (RIP David "Wavee Dave" Chambers). He was the mascot MANY years past grad school and even a few years ago, Jackson named a street after him. "Wavee Dave" is another tradition that every mascot tries to incorporate a "call-back" to the legendary mascot (David) that everyone loved. He was the one who started the tradition of the baby tiger mascots/dancers as well. Check out on KZbin the "Tapemaster" channel. Some are grainy footage but this channel has SWAC halftime shows from the 80s - 90s (maybe earlier) and you can see the traditions that every part of the band keeps and some of the components that later-years' halftimes incorporate. You can even see Wavee Dave perform on some of the old videos with his acrobatic moves (multiple flips and splits) and energetic dances. (That channel plays the full halftime show of both bands per game.) Chile, there are even 2 videos here on KZbin with Wavee Dave getting into a fight with the Grambling tiger, who started messing with JSU first...even during the tradition of Wavee & the baby tigers running into the goal post. Gambling tiger deliberately stood in front of the goal post...knowing that tradition goal-post run was going to happen! Watch the SB360 videos on the JSU Band official channel and Dr. Taylor (recently-retired longtime Director of Bands) and other directors tell the history of the band. One director tells how the "Tiger Run-on" was created by twin trumpet players goofing around at practice & the then-director called them forward, made them demonstrate the move (they had been doing...instead of practicing), told them to speed it up, & then instructed them to teach their band section the move...and another tradition was born!!!

@@ocutts6109 Found some of my favorite DM and band clips. You will see the traditions. In that MLK Parade Day, watch later in the video...during the "No Crime" (Babyface song) and the J4 really show out on that song. (Some years it is J4 instead of a J5 squad). kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXLcYaCjed2Hj9E Abraham Duffie Head DM (who trained the current and previous 2 Head DM). kzbin.info/www/bejne/omfCgaCMecSarrc (another videographer captured more sections of everybody) & you will see the elements of tradition. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXe4kKCMeb9sla8 the MLK parade. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaSnc3mhlL1gd68 My favorite Christmas parade video of Boom's...Abraham leading again. Watch for fantastic jazzy James Brown "Santa Please Come To The Ghetto" and towards the very end Frankie Beverly & Maze song that sounds GANTASTIC with the acoustics under the bridge. Enjoy!

the lack of foresight and deep need to be validated by outsiders is so disturbing. When they start their own groups, get funding, claim they are the best/ created this culture, and start excluding BP, then folks want to cry.
@TexLex862 жыл бұрын
@@peachmari I say this everytime. The Black community lacks foresight. The fact that we are the creators and leaders of this HBCU marching band culture, and this praise for the drum major is so weird to me. I've watched JSU my whole life. No offense, but this guy doesn't hold a candle to many past head drum majors. Does anyone know how this really looks to the outward world? I just saw a video from the homecoming. This big ol large crowd of Black alumni and students being led by a Mexican dude. It looks crazy. Our community is constantly searching for validation and inclusion when WE ARE THE TRENDSETTERS AND TASTE MAKERS. So meek and docile of a people. When will we ever learn? And yes, it's that serious.
