Bandi saying Porkkalam is immature and unemotional is crazy. I think it was intensely emotional. Every shot vibrates with emotion, making dialogues unnecessary. Bandi manipulates the fabric of cinema so powerfully that it warped how I viewed the real world for many months: through a wide-angle lens, in ultra slow motion, mundane SUV's transformed into hulking beasts. The boxoffice failure of that film put him in a vulnerable state of mind where he was convinced by someone less artistic than him that movies should instead be highly verbose, dialogue-heavy exercises. Now, to me at least, his films exert less of a hypnotic pull than Porkkalam. It's the difference between a timeless fable and the latest episode in the Raj-Lavanya story: seedy, sleazy, misogynistic, but not something to be remembered and treasured (today the problem with gritty and real cinema is that it cannot keep up with reality and the daily news in terms of violence, shock value, high stakes, surprise, labyrinthine plotting and a huge cast of colorful characters). I am fairly sure that Porkkalam will be remembered as long as cinema exists (in fact I would urge Srikar to create an entire video/interview around Porkkalam and its influence on KGF and Indian cinema). His more recent films by contrast come across as interesting but shapeless showcases for Bandi's acting ambitions. Bandi now thinks that being "real" is the most important thing, but the easiest way to refute that is to point to the power and influence that the Ramayana and Mahabharata still exert on us today.
