Avenged Sevenfold... they slightly alter their sound with literally every album and improve greatly while still keeping their heavy metal roots, they've always experimented with their sound, and in 2016 they released their BEST album to date, The Stage, which is definitely progressive metal with traditional heavy metal at heart that still manages to keep a sense of mainstream accessibility, hence why they're still one of the biggest metal bands of this century... in 7 albums A7X went from metalcore, to heavy metal, to a mix of metal, hard rock, country, and some cinematic Tim Burton-esque song, all on their self-titled, to a classic metal sound most reminiscent of black album-era Metallica, to progressive metal... they may not have entirely changed genres and all but they are definitely extremely versatile and obviously talented as hell and I'm honestly anxious to hear what they put out next

Part 2 pls. A couple of bands I would like to see covered: Parkway Drive: After 4 albums of metalcore, they went in a different direction, with lead vocalist Winston McCall stating that they've "outgrown metalcore". While most of their core fanbase can't stand their last two albums (I think they're decent but not as good as their early material), their new songs are WAY more popular (8 out of their top 10 on Spotify are from the past 2 albums). Avenged Sevenfold: Altho you've done a video on them already, would be interesting to hear abt how their fans reacted to all their changes (personally, I think Nightmare is their best album, with City of Evil being a close 2nd). Paramore: While I don't like anything they've done after Brand New Eyes, their newer songs seem to do rly well. My theory is that they gained more of a mainstream following with their self-titled album which more than makes up for the ppl they might have alienated.

A really interesting example of this is Opeth I think. They just do whatever they feel is right, even though I don't really dig much of newer stuff - they're generational talents (the dichotomy between Damnation and Deliverance is really telling a story about the kind of artists they are) . Who knows in a couple more years Ill be able to appreciate the newer stuff as well.

Had to come back here just to comment - I think we need to tread lightly on the Metallica discussion. Obviously Finn - you're the GOAT and did a magnificent job with the video. We've all argued endlessly about Metallica's turn when they went to the Black Album, Load, and ReLoad...and I think collectively now - in 2020 - those albums are regarded and received well by metal and Metallica fans...granted although, hated at the initial time of their release. To this amazing music discussion and very loaded conversation...I'll say this: Finn, how was Metallica supposed to survive if they didn't evolve? The Black Album by far catapulted the band to rich millionaire megastars, and did more for them in the mainstream than Kill Em All, Justice for All, Lightning, or Puppets could have ever dreamed. They needed to follow-up in a way that didn't depart too much from the Black Album with Load and ReLoad. More importantly however - think about the timing. The 90's was full-on Grunge with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, STP, etc. and pop-punk with Green Day, Offspring, and Blink and eventually Nu Metal...where was the long-hair, black leather jacket, tight jeans, and dark boots look and sound of Thrash Metal supposed to go? It would have been very dated for Metallica to continue being Thrash. Look at Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer...they all stayed in their era and lane and non evolved to Metallica's level of megastardom and "Godfathers of Metal" status. Also...at that time, I remember Metallica co-headlining or headlining alongside popular acts dominating the airwaves like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot. So in a way...Metallica had to ditch the outdated sound and look in order to survive. True, they turned their back on their original fanbase and Thrash sound...but nowadays, most look back at Black/Load/ReLoad with a positive outlook. If it weren't for those albums...if the Thrash sound just continued through...would Metallica have survived and been crowned the Gods of Metal and granted untouchable immunity? Everything has to evolve to survive...our favorite bands are no different. Metallica still sells out stadiums around the world within minutes...can other bands say the same? All these years later...
@ippotsk3 жыл бұрын
Although you could also say that by staying in their lane, the rest of the Big 4 of Thrash managed to rack up less "hate from their fans" over the past decades than Metallica have gotten in a single given year. Even if Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer aren't really household names like Metallica these days, who's to say that it may not be what they wanted all along? Just a thought.
@botaniccal3 жыл бұрын
Metal and rock fans are the absolute worst It's either a Volbeat, Seether, or FFDP thing where the fans are like "yeah, we like it, but its literally the exact same thing as the last 3 albums" or it's a Metallica, Faith No More, Slipknot, Pearl Jam, or Korn thing where it's "wow this isn't like what they used to do, this sucks." I always like to think about it this way: if it came from another artist, would I like it? Because I would love the black album and ReLoad if it came from someone not named Metallica, so I just like those albums instead of bitching and moaning that it isn't Puppets again

@NsiderCustomrobo134 жыл бұрын
I kinda agree, but I think they took some of the criticism to heart that influenced their change. They went from doing pig-squeals every song and being the most well known band in the genre for that vocal style and deliberately did 0 pig squeals on everything after Doom. They clearly thought they were sick when they made Doom, but it was the aspect "real metal" fans hated the most and scene kids liked the most. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHqTqIejptiCg8U

Why every reviewer likes Code Orange - Underneath: The record has range. Band is drawing influences from Merzbow, Skinny puppy, Converge, All out war, and grunge? Those are like, snobby underground tastemakers favorite things. Tallica has become a legacy classic rock act while also staying a classic metal band with a huge global audience. It is clearly mainly because of their 80s output but some of the songs that you talk about also are popular with people from the 90s and 2000s and the new metalheads just focus on their more recent neothrash albums and their classic 80s stuff. In the early 90s they became so huge that it guaranteed a huge global audience no matter what they would do. The other big 4 bands did not achieve that much success and so it seems to me they have decided to stay mostly within thrash while dabbling in other experiments not too far from that (Anthrax and Megadeth) while Slayer more or less just decided to stay with their 80s sound but with better updated production in a way not too different from what AcDc or the Stones did.

But years later I checked out Neon Ballroom and Freak Show and was blown away about how much they progressed.

The big one for me is In Flames. They have so far changed their style three times. From 1994 - 2000 they were a pioneering Melodic Death Metal band, then from 2001 - 2010 they played more mainstream alternative metal/metalcore with a mix of screams and clean singing, and finally from 2012 - present they've moved to a more rockier sound with even more clean singing & less harsh screams. There's barely any metal left to their sound outside of a few songs and they're music is a far cry from what it was when they original started playing. I still enjoy all their albums but their 1994 - 2000 output was head and shoulders above anything they've released since.

I'd love a part 2. Bands I think would be interesting: Beastie Boys: Started as hardcore punk, made famous by their shift to hip-hop, followed by long lasting success as a very eclectic act. Bathory: Pioneers of black metal. Then abandoning it to create viking metal then abandoning that for thrash (before returning to viking metal). Interesting because they seem high respected for the black and viking metal material (I imagine those fanbases cross over a lot). While the reaction to the thrash stuff seems more mixed. Also interest that there seemed to be no attempt to cash in on the phenomenon of 90s black metal. Darkthrone: Techdeath to black metal to general 80s worship. Techdeath era seems largely forgotten. Black metal era is loved by black metal fans. Black metal fans seem mixed on their more recent output but critics seem to like it. Pantera: Obvious reasons Dissection: Controversial third album Rebel MC/Congo Natty: From pop rap to underground jungle. I feel like hip-hop in general is harder to really put on a list like this. Reason being the way a rap album can easily have a mix of violent, grimy songs and radio-friendly songs. Somehow I feel rap artists can straddle the mainstream/ underground line a bit easier than a rock band can. Maybe due to the tendency to work with many producers on one album, as well as the culture of collaboration.
@TheCHECK974 жыл бұрын
True, I was thinking about his video on why rap became more popular than rock and I think its because theres a much larger range artists can have as a rapper. Examples would be xxxtentacion's "?" Album. Theres a lot of different sounds in just one place as opposed to what a band can do when they have to have all members and instruments present for each song. One good example of a band giving a wide range of varying sounds is Gojira on practically every album, but they're the exception

Linkin Park and In Flames changed their sound pretty drastically to reasonable success. Although In Flames actually barely changed their formula (hearing newer and older songs live seem like they could be from the same era) But old fans complain because the production is less intense, except they don't even realise that's the thing that changed

It's so weird because they sounded flawless.. Sang beautifully, played perfectly... It just... Sucked though. Was absolutely awful. Every song sounded the same... I didn't understand it at all because I love a lot of their stuff, haven't paid so much attention to their newer stuff but all the old goodies are awesome.. But they still... Sucked. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! I don't think the singer said a single word to the audience... They came out and literally just played their set.. Back to back to back to back songs. Nothing in between, at least nothing that was memorable anyway... Then they left. Man it was so awful seriously. Kind of like how I remember Children of Bodom being unfortunately...

I haven't commented on a video yet, but this is something that I really would like to discuss. Beginning with Code Orange. I think that part of their current success is part of the pandemic. This album's hype was beyond huge going into the release of Underneath. Two banger singles, never performed live, and a whole album to tear through. The album is littered with these quick industrial cuts mixed with pure beatdown tempos everywhere. The album tour? Jesus Piece, YOTK, Show Me The Body. That is a dangerously fun lineup if you find yourself in the hardcore scene. Following that tour was the tour every 27 year old in the scene wanted. Slipknot finally bringing in bands from the scene era, rather than the typical Trivium, (reformed dadrock hardcore), and DevilDriver. No, Slipknot was finally bringing on Underoath, ADTR, and Code Orange. If you have remained in your local scene, this is the show you were waiting for. Code Orange was going to fucking explode after this tour. Code Orange is huge because they worked hard, and when the system had finally accepted them, it collapsed due to a pandemic. The roller coaster broke down at the top of the lift. Their management of time and art during the pandemic has been extraordinary. They snagged new fans due to their contributions to WWE, but they didn't break the ground they were standing on by allowing Reba to shine on songs that are not typical beatdown hardcore. Soft and creepy metal buildups for the not typical hardcore fan, realness from Jami and the rhythm section for the pit. I think hardcore fans have evolved enough to be proud of successes and not break down a band that wants create something different. But I think the important thing to note is that it never seemed fake. It seems like they allowed collaborations from new members and that really shows.
@williamharrington63834 жыл бұрын
Their success is predicated on a mixture of factors: good groovy, music that crosses genres and brings fans together from different camps, good marketing in the album drop, but for better or worse I definitely think the fact they have Reba is a "selling point" for them. She's a great player and has a following of her own that has brought the band up a notch or two in terms of notoriety.
@rafaelalamilla55834 жыл бұрын
I saw Code Orange back in 2016 when they toured with Gojira. And while I wasn't really into them when I saw them I knew these guys were going places. Fast forward to this year and I am blown away with Underneath. It has a lot of different influences and is culmination of all the work they've put in to achieve success. Not to mention that they do a lot of their merch and business themselves. I tend to overlook the fact they they have Reba as a vocalist/singer.... I don't think any particular member "makes" that band what it is. The group as a collective is what really sets them apart from the rest.

Until Your Heart Stops wasnt a proper album it was a collection of singles from about 4 years of work. Steve, Adam, and JR had been working on spacey Jupiter type material when Jay was still on vocals, pre Caleb on bass. Then came Antenna.... natural progression and they kept a huge portion of their fanbase as that scene had been progressing with them incorporating more heady influence. Cave In technically started out as a screamy emo type band in the Andover/Methuen, MA scene that also produced Piebald and bands like the Hugeunots and 7% solution.

Code Orange today has way more in common with 90s Alternative and Industrial metal than with Orgy who were basically new wave pop meets metal (which I enjoyed growing up) I love Code Orange's most recent two albums, they really dont sound like anything or anyone else out there. When everyone else is going for clean digital they're going full grungy analog a la Rob Zombie, early NIN and Ministry. They are this weird mix of industrial, alternative, hardcore and art metal. Writing them off as a WWE band I feel like is a slap in the face to their actual work.
