First off you will never hear woodwinds cut through brass when brass players are cranking. Those screams that you hear through the songs are trumpet players. Range wise, jsu would shit on SU. Not to mention, in jsu neck their btones play alot higher than su's btones in it, the tubas and mellos even play up there. And no, I know the difference in their sound though. Jsu is going to be louder than Su regardless simply because they are always in tune for one and the size difference, but even if Jsu were small like in 05 they could still put out way more sound, simply because they are always in tune.

I don't know how long JSU been playing "the show" but SU's version is older than what most of y'all think. Mr. J wrote it when he was a high school band director. Not sure what year that was but he's been at SU since the early 90s. So do the math. Can't really say it was written around JSU's version.
