Morris Day and the Time was a protege band of Prince's. They all grew up together in Minneapolis. Morris (who started as a drummer) and Prince went to high school together. When Prince started to blow up, he created The Time and moved Morris to the front man spot. You'll get to see them all in action in the movie "Purple Rain," which was a world-wide phenomenon in the 80's. Check it out and enjoy!

Bit more than a portage band as Prince wrote all the first three albums and most of the fourth. Prime and the Revolution pretty much recorded the first three too, Morris using Prince's vocal take as a guide track. I think Jesse and Jellybean did some recording. What's strange is The Time are an incredibly talented bunch of Musicians in their own right, the Album they recorded as The Original 7ven was all their own work and its brilliant.

It was also a combination of Jimmy Jam and Terry Parker. Those guys spread out the Prince-style to Sheila E, Morris Day, Vanity and even Janet Jackson. They had a good thing going for a long time.
@AlfredPinkard
@AlfredPinkard 4 ай бұрын
@@lashlarue59 No, the first 3 Time albums were Morris Day on drums and Prince on everything thing else. Sheila E and Vanity was all Prince in the studio. In each case, Prince wrote and performed everything in the studio. He made the albums and then removed his lead vocals only. Those background vocals including the ones when Morris yells band are all Prince's vocals.He then had Morris, Sheila E. And Vanity sing his lead note for note as close as they could get to his lead tracking vocals. They were well rehearsed because Prince rehearsed and drilled them. Prince approved the mirror bit because Jerome did it in practice and cracked Prince up. However by this album that was featured in the movie Purple Rain, Prince had fired Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis when they missed a concert due to being stuck in a snow storm in Atlanta where they were secretly beginning their producing career working with The SOS Band. They weren't even members of The Time on Jungle Love. Getting fired was the best thing for them as they went on to become super producers Janet Jackson and many others and won Grammys. They were a Prince protege band only but clearly had to talent to be much more if he had let them.

@vecarter569
@vecarter569 5 ай бұрын
@@nanyabyzness3234 Yep, correct...they had been in Atlanta producing for the SOS Band (who became their 1st production work...after they were fired). They could not make it back in time to open for Prince in concert. Firing was a blessing...cause they produced hit albums for SOS Band. Then, they produced for their original lead singer (Alexander O'Neal)...for his solo hit albums. When the band The Time was being formed, Alex was going to be their singer...they already had a drummer...so Prince was trying to fit Morris into the group. Alex asked how much they were going to be paid. Prince pulled Jimmy/Terry to the side and said Alex had to go. So, it was cool to see Jimmy/Terry produce Alex (after their firing). Then came Janet and that Control album...etc....

@@BayAreaSon By 1981, Prince had built The Time out of an existing Minneapolis funk/R&B unit, Flyte Tyme, which featured Cynthia Johnson on lead vocals and sax, Anton (Tony) Johnson on guitar, David Eiland on saxophone, Jellybean Johnson on drums, Jimmy Jam and Monte Moir on keyboards, and Terry Lewis on bass. Prince conceived the Time as an outlet for the material he wrote earlier in his career, allowing him to experiment with other styles. He sourced some members of the group from the local Minneapolis funk band Flyte Time - among them Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - and added others including Day, a childhood friend. Everyone knew about every good group in Minneapolis, but the nation doesn't know who you are until Prince "discovers" you, and you start making hit records. Without Prince there's no Time.

Finally!!!! Morris Day and the Time were part of Prince's Paisley Park family! This group was so unique and talented. Morris Day (lead singer) still performs today. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who produced many of Janet Jackson's hit albums were also a part of this talented group! Check out their other hits, "Cool", "Oak Tree", "777-9311", "The Bird" and much more!! These clips are from Purple Rain, Prince’s movie, and he was great in it! This is the great eighties!❤❤

Yes, The Time was a Prince conception. Morris Day in addition to two other members. Morris Day was a friend of Prince's from childhood. There is another Morris who played keyboard in Prince's band. I saw an interview with him - it was in four parts, but really good. It is on the Wings of Pegasus channel (Fil Henley). Fil is a musician and teacher of guitar and analyzes voices on various songs.

I was a teenager in San Francisco in 1981/82 and saw Morris Day and the Time as the opening act for Prince at the early part of their careers at the Civic Auditorium. The concert hall held about 7,500 people. Most people sat in the balcony seats that night so my friends and I walked right onto the auditorium floor and watched the show 10 feet from the stage. I’ll always remember that concert.

My favorite track from the Time is "777-9311." In my opinion, it has one of the funkiest drum tracks and bass lines ever recorded and a killer electric guitar solo, but you've gotta listen to the full 8 minute version to hear the solo. Some other tracks I love from the The Time are "Get It Up," "The Walk," "The Bird," and "Jerk Out," which is the band's biggest hit.

I'm a Minneapolis native who still lives here. I've seen Morris Day & The Time in concert a number of Times! Cool to see the video which shows highlights from the movie Purple Rain...from 1984! Most of the concert scenes were filmed at 1st Avenue Nightclub in Minneapolis! Of course, most of the movie was shot in Minneapolis. Prince also had a GREAT nightclub here in the 1990s called Glam Slam (clubs in Minneapolis, LA and Miami) which attracted celebrities and people from ALL over the world! The BEST dance club we ever had! A few other nice songs by The Time: it's 777-9311, Cool, Get It Up, Wild & Loose...and slow groove Gigolos Get Lonely Too. As Morris would say, "YESSS!" 😊🎸👏🏾🎤🎹🥁

Prince was always finding hidden gems to promote as proteges. This band was in the movie Purple Rain but Prince made sure they were brought into the pop arena because there was so much talent in the band - Morris Day, Jelly Bean Johnson, Jerome Benton, Jesse Johnson, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis went on to become huge producers and produced Janet Jackson's CONTROL album. This is from the mid-80's and you need to react the the movie PURPLE RAIN at some point.

Your comparison to Prince is spot-on. This is basically a Prince song - they released his demo a few years ago and it's almost identical to the final version, right down to the "oh-we-oh-we-oh"s. Basically Prince recorded the track, then took off his vocals and had Morris redo them.

Morris Day was in Prince's high school funk rock band as drummer later on. Before that, he was in the RIVAL high school funk rock band. So that part of the movie was based on their actual high school rivalry. Morris Day was for awhile a stagehand/backstage assistant and helped craft the song "Partyup" which was on Prince's third studio album. Prince offered to pay him some money for the song or help him start a new band. Morris chose Prince helping him get a band going and thus was born The Time. Originally, Alexander O'Neal was going to be the singer but was asking for too much money (and he had a drug problem). Prince talked Morris Day into taking the lead vocal spot and giving up the drum spot and he was right. The thing with Alexander being a dodged bullet became a bit of a joke when Prince would use various pen names to write for other musicians, one of which was Alexander Nevermind. As others have said, Prince owned The Time and crafted most of their material for them - at least until their revival in the 2000s as "The Original 7ven." Morris Day is still releasing his own music today. For this Christmas, be sure to check out his song "Cooler Than Santa Claus."

As some have already mentioned, the Time came out with Prince and the Revolution. Morris Day and Prince were childhood friends who grew up playing music together. Prince created the Time band as a side project, wrote the music and asked Morris to take the lead. This song was on the Purple Rain soundtrack; in fact, those are scenes from the movie Purple Rain in the video. More songs include “the Bird”, “Cool”, “the Walks” and “Gigolos Get Lonely Too”. Minneapolis sound, baby!!!

15 year old me was obsessed with Prince, the Purple Rain movie and soundtrack. I actually listened to the soundtrack on cassette using my walkman on a family vacation cross country - when one side ended I ejected it, turned it around and listened to the other side....for DAYS. When Prince died some movie theaters where I live showed the original movie and I was so glad I went.

"Modernaire", by Dez Dickeson "Player's Ball", by Mazarati All of these artists, and songs were either signed by prince, or worked/toured with Prince, or were highly influenced by him.
