The colorful train running through this market is a diesel railcar made in Japan! It was an old type of railcar called "Kiha 47". It's heartwarming to see that a train from Japan is still active in a country so far away.

毎々楽しみに拝見しております。 私たちも数回メークローンまで行こう思い ウォンウェイヤイから汽車でマハーチャイまで行き そこでお昼を食べてからターチン川を渡りバーンレーム駅まで行くのですが 駅が見つからなかったり、満腹で疲れてしまったり、すぐに汽車が無かったり・・ 未だメークローンまで辿り着けません。 と言うよりマハーチャイ周辺で満足してしまう感じでした。 喧騒のバンコクを離れ近郊でもチープでローカル感満載の街が いつまでも残っているのがタイの魅力の一つですネ メークローンは行かずとも残しておきたい目的地です。 次号も楽しみにしております。

Thailand's romanization started more than 100 years ago, especially during King Rama VI who was educated in English boarding school for several years when he was till a prince. The system was later standardized by Royal Society of Thailand and all official road signs/places adopt this system. Note Roman alphabets are not confined only to English/American languages. Practically all European languages adopt Roman alphabets as their main writing system. Some non-European countries also do likewise including Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Even though most non-European countries have their own native writing system, they still adopt romanization to help foreigners recognize/pronounce road/place names including Thailand, China (pinyin) and Japan (romaji). Westerners or those who learn English as a second language must accept the fact that those romanised words are not necessarily pronounced like English/American common pronunciation. But it is easy to adapt once you know how the local native pronounce it. In Thailand, "PH" is pronounced aspirated P (people) while "P" is pronounced non-aspirated P (papa)..

I'm interested in something related to this. I have always wondered why other countries in Southeast Asia use so many alphabets besides Thailand. Where have their native characters gone? I thought. I was also very interested in the difference between Thai traffic notation and actual pronunciation. For example, in the Chatuchak market, isn't the pronunciation of Roman letters and the pronunciation of Thai people different? Thai people call this place JJ, right? (Ja-Ja?)

This is the famous folding umbrella market [Talat (market) Rom (umbrella) Hup (fold)]. It can be accessed either by road or train itself from the first station at Wong Wian Yai (Big Circle) where at the middle is King Taksin (who liberated Siam from Burma) statute. If my memory holds, it costs 15 baht (40 cents) for 3rd class ticket to arrive at this Maeklong station. Wong Wian Yai is about 5 km from Memorial Bridge, the first bridge built across Chao Phraya river about 100 years ago. At the foot of this bridge is King Rama I (who succeeded King Taksin and moved Siam capital to Bangkok) statue. Parallel to this bridge, there is another bridge and at the center is 2-meter wide Skywalk Garden which is for people who enjoy walking/sitting/drinking Thai beer while watching sunset at Chao Phraya river. Highly recommended.

SRT is the State Railway of Thailand, a state enterprise, with more than 150 years history since King Rama V. SRT is the biggest landlord in Thailand as all the stations and nearby land belong to it. In those days, land was cheap and the state allocates plenty of land to the SRT including the now high-value Chatuchak Weekend Market (the largest open market in the world. SRT is running at a loss since its inception and the successive governments have to allocate annual budget to supplement SRT's revenue. If SRT did not earn lucrative rent revenue at Chatuchak Market and Central Latphrao Mall, its annual losses would be even much more than at present. SRT's 3rd class ticket is one of the cheapest in the world, a huge bargain. Apart from normal train run on diesel engine, SRT also runs 2 electric trains in Bangkok, the Red Line to the suburbs (North and West) and Airport Link from Suvarnabhumi airport to the heart of Bangkok (Phyathai station).

行き方は複数あって、列車、地元のミニバス、観光バスツアーなどがあります。列車は乗り継ぎが多く本数が少ないので時間にゆとりがないと難しそうで、ミニバスもバンコクの南ターミナルまで中心部から行くのが遠いので少し時間がかかります。私たちは今回観光バスツアーで行ったのですが、バンコクの中心部のサイアムからバスが出ていて、一日で効率よく観光地を回れたのでよかったですよ😊他の手段に比べると値段は少し高いですがおすすめです。 bit.ly/3YQzgnH
