When I first went to Udon, what stunned me was though it was almost 40C, people were dressed like they were going skiing in Maine. Face masks, hats, 3 layers of long sleeve shirts and jackets with long pants. Took me a while to learn that it actually worked. When I motorcycled across the US during the summer several times, I had a motorcycle jacket that had zip vents in the front, under the arms and in the rear so air could pass through. On hot days in the planes and southwest, I'd soak my T-shirt, then put the jacket on top with the vents only partially open. Like air-conditioning, it would keep me cool for a couple of hours.

Pro-tip for riding in Thailand. Get some riding "sleeves." The sock like things that go from your wrist to your upper arm. You can still wear a short sleeve shirt with them, get air up in the shirt to cool you off when you ride, but your arms are covered. You can take them off when you are in the shade. All the pros of a long sleeve and a short sleeve in one. Once you get a decent pair, you'll be hooked.

Are you going to Loei on this road trip? That's a province that stood out to me when I did my Issan roadtrip some years ago. There's a riverside highway that you can take from Nongkhai on the Udon Thani province border with Laos, where the Friendship bridge is. The highway follows the course of the Mekong. The town of Chiang Karn particularly stands out in my memory. I hear it's become a destination since I was there, when it was very sleepy, so now might be a good time for it. How to describe it? It was like a mini-Chiangmai, more like Northern Thailand than Issan.
@dumbo32004 жыл бұрын
dhgemein2 . My wife’s family are outside Pak Chom on that highway. I love it over there and love staying on the farm. Chad if you do go that way stay at Mekong Riverside resort near Pak Niam. Mike and pBen will look after you. Chiang Khan is a good Thai tourist town these days.

This video brought me back to memories from a year ago. Hey... This is Chai. I'm the one that lives in Buckhead in Atlanta. I can't believe you are in Udonthani. That is my hometown where I was born. I left there when I was 10 years old and came to live in America. My dad is American and my mom is Thai. He met my mom when he was in the Army. I have a home and property in Udon and my sister still lives there. When I go back to visit that is where my home base is. I still speak, read and write Thai. I finished 5th grade in Udon when I left and came to the U.S. I watched your other video and you are absolutely right about Udon. There is nothing to do much unless you are a native and live or work there. It's not a tourist city or town and when I go home to visit I usually don't stay long in Udon. I am restless and I need to go explore different part of the country. I still remember much of my childhood growing up and it was a happy one. The vehicle that you called " Tuk Tuk " in Udon is called '' Saam law kreaung ". It means 3 wheels motor bike. Udon has developed a lot since I left, but it still has a long way to go. I left Thailand in 1973. I enjoy watching your video and I'm impressed with you and your adventure. If you have any questions I can help answer please let me know.Chai Butler / Atlanta
