What a pity that I can give you only ONE thumbs up for this video, by my opinion it deserves at least TEN thumbs up for the phantastic content as well as for the quality of the making. @BangkokPat
@BangkokPat 3 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with you, it's more Blandcock nowadays and I'd say 2008 is about right, Bkk went off the boil after that and the condos and development accelerated to full speed, third world mentality thinks it's cool to look modern regardless of the reality. Bangkok can't keep papering over the cracks, if they're gonna modernize, then bring salaries, infrastructure and education along with it.

In about a dozen visits over the years I've never felt like I understood Bangkok. Too big, and seemingly chaotic. Thanks to the video I feel like I have a little more insight. And love the historical stuff. My first visit to the city was in '88 and loved it then. Unfortunately they seem to be remaking Bangkok into a pale imitation of Singapore. It's a shame to see the old city - narrow sois, street vendors, etc - gradually disappearing.
@BangkokPat

I agree with you Andrew, Bangkok can seem like a jungle, and it is a jungle unless you're a city kind of person. They are trying to make Bangkok look modern, with all the buildings and gloss, but at its heart it'll be 3rd world as long as the infrastructure and poverty still exists, the new buildings just hide it more.

Thank you for bringing back my memories of Bangkok. I first visited in 73 as a 21 year old and I delighted in seeing the Atlanta Hotel, the Grace Hotel and the coffee shop, plus the Thermae Cafe, all frequent hangouts over the years and unforgettable moments lived there. Bangkok is one of the most exciting cities of the world. Much has changed, but the essence of what makes Bangkok, it's nightlife, the bars, the markets and the whole scene haven't changed all that much. That is until Covid took over, but I have not experienced this side of travelling in Asia yet. Let's just hope things will change for the better again very soon. I am feeling sorry for people in Bangkok suffering from the side-effects of the pandemic and the political upheaval taking place. Thx again for the great video.

Thanks very much and sorry for late response, you would have definitely seen another completely different side of the city back then! Hopefully things can get back to the way it was before this all started in early 2020

Grace Hotel coffee shop. First visited in 1980, then 1983 and finally 1989. Once visited never forgotten. The Atlanta Hotel, cheap but scruffy (never changed the sheets, never a shower head in the bathroom, nil maintenance carried out) but good restaurant. Thermae, the bar scene in Star Wars had nothing on this place.

Stumbled on this and glad I did. Who remembers real elephants and their handlers walking along Sukhumvit for peddling for change? That was a shock to me let me tell you. The city has grown show much these days that its barely recognizable. Funny though...the girls who are employed in these bars don't seem to have aged at all. lol
@BangkokPat
@BangkokPat 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, glad you found it! I remember the elephants getting walked all over the place for money in exchange for sugar cane, sad sight that was outlawed finally. Bangkok is more like Blandcock nowadays, the character that attracted many in the old days all dried up. The government thinks foreigners wanna shop in big malls and are constantly building them, obliterating areas once more entertaining. In Nana on the corners of soi 6 and soi 7 opposite eachother are two commercial developments going up, and where Bullys was will soon be a flash overpriced fitness centre for the yuppies. The girls attitudes hardened as they became more fussy, which the internet and smartphones are to blame for. You're lucky if anyone even glances up at you as you walk in to some places. What a real shame. At least at our age we got memories!

In 1969, the Golden Palace Hotel was a great place for us GI's to stay on a budget. It did not cost 1500 Baht either. For 200 Baht a night (50:1 at the time=$10), The dining room was functional. The mural from that time is still there today. A phone call got you a girl for the night if so desired right 100-150 B. Or you went out and got company yourself. It was clean and modern for the times. Never had a problem with the shower either. It was a different time and different place back then. A private van for $100 B or more if not full, would take you back to your base. So somethings in this video is not quite accurate but close. I know I practically lived there.

Hello Ivan, apologies for such a delayed reply. That hotel was a mystery for those like me who only ever heard about it without ever going or staying there! Here is a ''then & now'' that I made of how the place looks now: www.flickr.com/photos/138595395@N02/51415545555/in/datetaken-public/ I'm actually really happy that a few ex US servicemen have got to see this video, the info I have had since doing it has been great, but like you say, some inaccuracies of course, I can only go by what I find online about these areas, and the whole GI era, which I find fascinating. I plan to do a whole Bangkok video on this, covering all the ares like the American Strip, Saphan Khwai, Khlong Toei, the other hotels around the city that had a murky past associated with that era. It'll take a lot of research and hopefully more stories from guys like yourself.

As I mentioned on the original Vid comments, I've always known Soi 9 as Soi PP. It was a name mentioned in (I think) the late 90s by an acquaintance and I'd assumed there was a long history of a business or something that gave it the name, but walking slowly past it one hot evening a few years later I realised it got it's nickname from the stench of ammonia... 555 PS, this is still an excellent video.

The original three bars moved to Nana when the big roadworks took place that gave us the major interchange /junction at Soi Asok . They where located on the left hand side of Suckhumvit coming into town and had to be demolished as part of the roadworks. Raja was the tailor, originally on Suckhumvit and operated by the twins who where part of the Nana family. They moved on to Soi 4 at the entrance to the Plaza and the younger nephew took over, top quality suits from Raja. The original Theremea was the best value for money Massage, reputedly owned by the Police Pension fund. Khun Nana owned the white wooden house on Suckhumvit located well back from the road just after Soi 1. John

Fantastic John, that's the kind of info Iyou'll never find in google, but wish I did. The roadworks at Asok was to widen the road, and they also got rid of the top of Soi 16, right? I been trying to piece this together for a while. And that house IS Lek Nana's house. I wondered about it, and was asking and nobody knew for sure on twitter/FB, so I didn't mention it. Should have. Cheers.

@@BangkokPat An elderly Brit I knew lived on Soi 1. He told me the old white wooden house was that of Khun Nana who originally owned all the land in that area after the railway line. I was also told that in very early sixties the eastern bus terminal was located there and there was nothing but orange orchards until you reached Pra Khanong, the first Amphure out of Bangkok. Then the 60s led to massive expansion of Suckhumvit and the area. John

My wife's cousin and her Canadian husband ran a restaurant on Soi 7/1 called B&A Bistro. On our 2016 trip we went a number of times for dinner during our stay in Bangkok. One night after dinner I decided to stay and drink with the husband and my wife returned to the hotel. A number of beers later I left, but instead of heading back down to Sukhumvit I decided to head the other way to see the rest of 7/1. I passed by Dr. BJs which if I had one more beer...... it would have been another story. Got to the top of 7/1 which hooked to the right and I found myself staring down Soi 9. I didn't know it was Soi 9. It looked to me more like some kind of service alley for the businesses on 7/1. You'd think one look and I would have turned around, but the beer was talking so it was "just carry on". It was creepy, foreboding, nasty. Had every characteristic of that place a tour book would say to avoid at all cost to life and property. Funny thing was the more I walked down the Soi the more comfortable I felt. Nobody bothered me, but there wasn't really anyone there, which actually should have been even more disturbing. Turned out to be one of those random memorable experiences that would never have been put on your "to-do" trip itinerary.

it was the clubbing Thais who felt they wanted to be on a par with what was a hit in Europe but to be honest it didn't quite work as the atmosphere in Bangkok clubs is just so different, earlier closings 1-2am, nights sponsored by whisky brands so people try to just look cool with their bottles, no other drinks available, not knowing how to dance to the tunes...that is what I witnessed at Ministry Of Sound Bangkok. In 1999/2000 the Thai scene was more techno orientated. Not saying it was terrible but things didn't quite feel the same as they would in London clubs. Then along came the cut price euro DJs, who hadn't played a gig in their own countries before but were a novelty ''foreign'' DJ here in Bangkok. I could go on and on, but I think you know what I mean.

Great video, oh so many memories for an old timer like me.. when you showed that picture of the Dubai Restaurant next to the Grace Hotel you should have mentioned that it’s the most amazing food. Everyone I have been there with has gone back again and again, only problem for some is that they don’t serve alcohol but that’s a small price to pay for such amazing food. I lived in North Thailand for 16 years and every couple of months I’d go to Bangkok meet a friend who lived in the south and we would stay in Nana area, in a friendly hotel above a tailors shop near the BTS. Nana in the daytime and Nana after midnight are of course like different planets.. I remember once I was walking to my hotel and a ladyboy approached me (as they do) and I wasn’t in the mood for girls/ladyboys at the moment.. she/he said to me “I go with you mr I have nice pussy”, I knew she was a lb so I said “ sorry no I am looking for a Ladyboy”, she Immediately replied with “ mr I have big cock”… only in Bangkok eh.

Thanks Andrew! The staff at the Dubai were amused watching me reshoot that so many times after getting the words mixed up (it was a lot of words to memorize) at one point I almost asked them for a glass of water....That hotel above the tailors, was that Parkway Inn? I always remember that as being 990 Baht for years. I recently got stared down by a LB in Nana and when I walked on I heard ''what's wrong with you I have same same lady'' ..at the moment a few freelancers standing about on the hope, and I'd imagine they do get some business given the number of blokes walking about prowling!
@andrewstones2921
@andrewstones2921 3 жыл бұрын
@@BangkokPat Yes the Parkway, the staff there are so friendly and the breakfast is included and is good, more important you can get a decent mug of tea anytime day or night. I’ve been to lots of other hotels in the area, including the Dynasty Inn but I’d never go back to the Nana Hotel after a shocking bad experience there in about 2002, also I sometimes go over to Maxims Inn just after the Eden Club on 7/1 , but I have to say Parkway was a favourite for many many years. Never underestimate the amount of business a LB gets around Nana, I find them entertaining and a lot of fun, but they can also be a real pain in the ass ( terrible pun I know). There is a LB bar upstairs in Nana Plaza that is small and has been there for decades, I’d often go in there for a drink with a friend who also finds then amusing. I know one gurl who has been there for 15 years to my knowledge.. I nearly choked on my beer once hearing her tell a punter that she’d worked there for 2 weeks and was 25 years old… I don’t know which lie was the biggest. The restaurant in the Nana hotel is good just for the view, and I like Chequers bar on Soi 4 also as it’s a break from all the usual bs. A lot of those Middle Eastern restaurants are great, but seriously If you have not eaten in the Dubai then you don’t know what you are missing.

There's a phrase many would use for that life, which is ''living the dream'' especially in those days before modernisation took hold here in Bangkok. I didn't get to Pattaya until 2000 and it was still a bargain and good old fashioned fun night out. After about 2005 it changed quickly, crowded and the wrong type of tourists (I know it sounds selfish) who weren't in town for the same reasons as before and there was no rapport between guys in bars like years before.
