Once a shining star in the sub-continent, Bangladesh's streets are now filled with disenchanted students protesting against a provision of 'quota' in government jobs for families of freedom fighters of the 1971 war. Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta in Episode 1485 of Cut The Clutter traces events from the 1970s till today to decode the underlying causes of the current controversy.

You are trying to sugar coat the dark episodes here. From 1972 all the Freedom fighter quota jobs went to Awami League party people. Now 56% is quota and rest of the jobs 44 percent is also unofficially in the hand of the Awami League political cadres. Basically 100% of the govt job including civil bureaucracy, judiciary, police and you name it. Now military cadet are also from the political family connection preferences.

To me, Delhi made many worng steps in the past years by supporting their one party vote, immense corruption led billions of dollars out of the country and Delhi backed them. Trade deficit are keep growing, water sharing never took place, BD borrowed the money for the development projects and connectivity, and India is taking full advantage of the all ports without paying a single penny! Delhi, knows everything when Hasina govt. dropped the most Hindu writer's and poetry from the curriculum including the Tagore, but they were well off with their own interret. I wish Shekhar Gupta has actually talked with some Bengali Journalists from West Bengal to understand the situation a little bit better. Bangladesh Jamat e Islam is same like Indian BJP as a religion based political party. Who think India is trying to control Bangladesh. Eventually dictator Sk. Hasina is a partner of India. That's the reason general public of Bangladesh don't like India. There is no Razakars and even Razakars ( if any) don't believe they will go back to Pakistan. you perhaps have consciously forgotten to mention that - The judiciary in Bangladesh is not independent but 100% partial to Awami League. Hasina government doesn’t have people’s mandate to cling on to power. Both of the last two elections were rigged the last one being with no practical opposition since Hasina had put the opposition leaders in jail prior to election. There is plenty of research data confirming the so called GDP rise during Hasina’s tenure is based on manipulated data. Finally, the opposition parties had nothing to do with the students movement from the outset - but hasina kept blaming them to mis-portray their sentiment. The mere excessive use of force -ongoing arbitrary killing of young lives to quell the movement in fear of losing tenure on the face of protests -itself confirms the autocratic nature of the kleptocracy Bangladesh has at present, which again along with the historically unprecedented level of corruption in Hasina’s administration you didn’t mention - but you should have, for a genuinely rounded analysis.

Usually Shekhar is not a fan of authoritarians. But perhaps because of Sheikh Hasina's India tilt (or his worry of Islamists coming to power) he seems willing to forgive her quite extreme ways: the judiciary (all the way to the supreme court), press, bureaucracy, police, and opposition have been brutalized by her. I am surprised and a bit sad to see this. But I suppose at least he is doing this in service of patriotism (since this authoritarianism is "positive" for India).

@nusharjamil5978 Spot on with your analysis. The fact is India is surrounded by countries which have suffered under Indian hegemony and Bangladesh is the only one that is friendly towards India; these include Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives. The current authoritarian BD government has sold itself to India to stay in power without having the public mandate. Bangladeshi's have watched this injustice (Farakka water sharing, border killings, free transport lines over Bangladesh, selling gas to India at cheap prices, innumerable others) and don't want the status quo to continue. The public now hates Indian hegemony and sees the Hasina government as complicit with India. Hence the India Boycott movement. I believe the Indian public thinks the same way and would stand up on the side of justice and not on the side of government oppression. Students of Bangladesh are fighting for justice and do not buy the government propaganda or lip-service anymore. It would be strategic on the Indian government's part to understand where the will of the Bangladeshi public is. One thing the youth of India can learn from the Bangladeshi students is how to keep focused and not be tired, when they are fighting for a just cause. Perhaps, this is the reason why Mr. Shekhar Gupta is siding with the authoritarian government of Bangladesh. He does not want to wake up the public and specially the youth to the problems at home in India.

Mr. Gupta, your analysis is riddled with errors and biases. First, you make Jamat appear to be a formidable force. Truth is, unlike India, religion based politics has never been big in Bangladesh. On their own, Jamat can maybe win 5 seats. Also, there’s no significant difference between Hasina and Khaleda’s parties in terms of their alliances. They both have both Islamists and Socialists as allies. It is true though that Awami League is the pro-India party. Secondly, there’s no independent judiciary in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina IS the “hukum”. The court decision was a game she wanted to play which went horribly wrong. Finally, nobody with an ounce of knowledge in official statistics believes Bangladesh’s economic data. The state bank had to revise the export figures down only days ago. The exporters have been saying for years that the data is seriously inflated. IMF forced Hasina to revise the foreign reserve figure previously. The rosy picture of Hasina’s economic development is pure nonsense. This is a volatile time for Bangladesh. Kindly do a bit more research next time if you’re speaking on this issue.

I 100% agree that Hasina has virtually become a dictator, but I feel Bangladesh needs a third front. Do you really think Khalida Zia (widow of the murderer as we know her) would be a better option? I'm sure you'd know better, it's also true that politicians preach in poetry and rule in prose... so Zia might take a more sensible neutral stand for the sake of development in Bangladesh.

@@Shaurya_Pant Khaleda Zia is on her deathbed. Her son, Tareq Zia is thought to be next in line. Tareq is whom India is most concerned about. He is believed to have helped Indian rebels in the past by supplying them weapons. Although that was a much younger, more arrogant Tareq. He seems to have matured but I can’t bet my money. The person who has become the face of Khaleda Zia’s party over the years is Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Mirza was a freedom fighter, a former communist student leader and a thorough gentleman. I don’t think he has a match in terms of clean image in Bangladeshi politics right now. If I were to decide India’s Bangladesh policy, I would put my weight behind Mirza. In any case, Hasina has turned into a narcissistic, sadistic fascist. To say that she is unpopular would be an understatement. Bangladeshis have always had mixed feelings about India, a mix of gratitude for the liberation war and resentment for border killings, dams on shared rivers, etc. But in recent years the resentment is through the roof because of India’s unwavering backing for Hasina. India should take note of the fact that they are alienating an entire generation of Bangladeshis. Mr Shaker Gupta, if India was interested in "Good Relationship" with Bangladesh then perhaps India should stop meddling in Bangladesh affairs and respect the choice of Bangladeshi people, propping up a puppet government of India. This is the first strong symptom that Bangladesh is now almost over her gratitude days. Now the youth who have not seen the 1971 struggle are not ready to allow gratitude to decide privileges. Any intent to bracket this sentiment into a right and wrong binary is futile. With time when history is forgotten collective emotions too fade; only that the character of the mass fosters protests. Bangladesh must recognise this dementia and drop the quota. 😊

The judiciary in Bangladesh is completely under the control of the government. In 2017 the government passed a bill giving power to appoint judges to the government. Which was challenged in the court and the court declared it unconstitutional. In retaliation, the government forced the Chief Justice to resign. Then they applied to the Supreme court. The Supreme court put on a stay on the previous ruling and the government has kept delaying any further hearing since then. Using the stay on the ruling government has filled every single court position with pro-govt judges.

So the moment the Supreme court stayed the operation of judgement of High Court, there remained no quota at all. Then what was the necessity or urgency of starting a movement for non discriminatory Quota movement or a quota reform movement. It had already been proved to some of us that some of these student leaders -cordinatotors numbering 15/16 or more as they said have been playing in the hands of BNP-JAMAT parties and I am confident that many of them would be proved to be supporters or sympathisers of BNP/JAMAT and their allied parties.

@SG You too have believed the propaganda that Pakistan dishes out to its population wrt East Pakistan aka Bangladesh. Fact is, in 1947, East Pakistan used to have bigger economy than West Pakistan. This situation started changing after the 1958 coup by Gen Ayub Khan. This is when West Pakistan started impoverishing East Pakistan to enrich itself. . This is the genesis of the resentment of the Bengalis towards West Pakistan. The Bengalis who visited newly created Islamabad, used to say that they can smell their looted money to create this city. It was not the politicians, public or journalists but the Bengali economists who were the driving force behind the 6 points of autonomy of East Pakistan from West Pakistan which ultimately led to the 8 months long bloody civil war and birth of Bangladesh. In fact, a Harvard educated Bengali economist had predicted breakup of Pakistan to Gen Ayub Khan way back in 1960. As per Tariq Ali, 70% of Pakistan's foreign exchange in 1971 used to come from the jute trade in East Pakistan. Pakistan was broke from the very beginning. It got the recruitment ground of the British India Army but not the economy. With the breakup of Pakistan in 1971, Pakistan is economically unviable. After 1971, it has been artificially propped up by USA, Saudi Arabia and China. Withdrawal of US support after 2022, has started Pakistan's current economic crisis. Saudi Arabia too is no longer keen on carrying the burden of Pakistan for too long. Only China is still propping up Pakistan with one loan after another leading to China becoming the largest debtor of Pakistan. Economic collapse of Pakistan will lead to further breakup of that country artificially created by forcibly merging parts of India, Afghanistan and Balochistan to house all the Muslims in the Indian subcontinent.

What is our malnutrition index, what is fertility rates in BiMAARu states, what is Infant mortality rates in North India and east, it is dismal. So there are other indices than just macroeconomics like GDp. And upper castes ( I am a Brahmin) are always ok with their basic education and family connections in India.

I have many Indian friends, they were all brainwashed with such ideology until they learned about reality on the ground. One kind suggestion, try to remove nationalism from your mindset (it leads to the fascism), you will never be able to understand the facts from objective manner. Never mind, your explanation will only motivate our Indian brothers or sisters who doesn't have knowledge about reality on the ground. In Bangladesh, people know very well about our prime minister. @the print: Watching from Ontario, Canada.. what a worse way to twist facts.. nicely done... I was a big fan of Sheikh Hasina and her party 20 years back, but after seeing her (her party members) corruption, I changed my mind. I am protesting this as no one from Dhaka or Bangladesh can't challenge as the Autocratic Sheikh Hasina Government has turned off the Internet (last week) and disconnected Bangladesh from the rest of the word to hide the truth.. will only share one line, the mass people of Bangladesh doesn't like the fact that Sheikh Hasina is giving India all the benefit (transit, purchasing military equipments in loan, etc.) Without getting any win for Bangladesh, she is doing it to illegally hold on to power with India's support. As a result, the mass people of Bangladesh are boycotting Indian products. Hope that clarifies facts for your viewers.

And Bangladesh boycott indian products because indian politicians and corporations fund sheikh hasina, in return she gives our tax money to india, allows corporations to steal our resources, refuses to build a dam, we lost 15000cr+ tk in losses in a single year due to flooding, a dam costs 75-150cr. We have nothing against india but why can't the people of our country ask questions about our policy? and Sheikh hasina has rigged the last 3 elections. she has a quota system for all government jobs, in which 56% are reserved, in 2018 people successfully protested and she shut it down, in 2024, she reinstated it via high court.

There are some serious misunderstandings of the circumstances. The Student Protest 2024 has been a student-only protest since 15th July, the day Hasina's government killed six people across the country, and their political wing the Chatra League (students' league) violently beat students, including women. So their decision to act violently was based on their understanding that it was a student movement, not because Jamat E Islam or BNP were trying to play villains, because the students were very clear that they did not want this movement to be a political mess. Hasina and her government use these party names as shields to conceal their atrocities. However, the protest basically turned into a mass movement when the killing hadn’t stopped the second day (it’s hard to distinguish, people of all walks were already enraged the first day of shootings). My personal estimation is that at least 250 people have already lost their lives, whatever the official news say, they are not comprehensive. And thousands injured.

Yes, Hasina’s govt is illegitimate, the elections were sham since 2014.
