Betty's passing: I was an Aged Care Nurse and had the great honour to be with hundreds of elderly people as they took their last breath. Some Nurses love Paediatrics and the beginning of this Life, but I always loved Geriatrics and the beginning of a 'different' life that I couldn't see. A great many of my beautiful patients came to see me after their passing, and that made it all worth while 💗💓

I ended my 52 1/2 year nursing career as a Hospice and Home Health nurse. My career started in geriatrics, added med-surg-peds, then on to Oncology, and a lengthy stint as Admissions and Discharge nurse at a LTC/rehab facility. So, aging and death were something I was comfortable dealing with. I thank all those nurses who did OB/Gyn, Psych, ER. Not for me, and those nurses felt the same way about my preferences!

My hubby worked for railway for decades and one guy got hit by a train and unfortunately cut in half , it was a traumatic thing to see and to witness , I will never forget the look on his face when he came home

I’m not an expert on children, ears, Lego, white beads, or big pieces of cake. I can’t help but wonder, though, that if a kid's reward for putting a bead in his ear and then letting them pluck it back out is a trip to the toy store to get the largest box of Lego that they have and then they'd head off to get a big piece of cake, wouldn’t the kid think that it might be worth doing that, or maybe something even more extreme, again when he wants another trip to the toy store and/or another big piece of cake?

The optics of the boy's situation weren't good to be sure. From the addiction to video games to the absurd bribery to the ultimate reward for him manipulating the situation was hard to watch. Yes, easy to be a critic from a million miles away and we don't see the full picture but I still agree with your general assessment.

I stuck a jelly bean in my ear when I was 3 or 4. My mom said when she looked at me I would turn away. My great grandma lived with us. My mom said I keep turning away when she looked at me. We went to the doctor and said the same thing. The doctor noticed that one of my ears was very swollen. He looked in my ear and said there’s a jelly bean in there and my ear was infected. The doctor got so mad because I kept lying to my mom that there was nothing wrong. I got a big lecture from him. I was crying my eyes out. Then when he tried to get it out I cried even more 😹😹😹😹

I raised 3 boys alone. I was a different kind of mom. No way that kid would have been begged for his permission. I would have told them to hold him down and take it out. Period. End of adventure. No reward for dumb behavior.

Agreed. Unfortuantely what it does teach children is that relationships and situations are transactional, which lacks humanity. Doesn't foster character. It creates too much extrinsic motivation which lacks true compassion.

In some situations it can be useful, like for example giving a child a small toy when getting a vaccine. But promising a child to go to the toy store and let him get basically whatever he wants is definitely going too far. The child should learn that he will not get rewarded for every little thing.

Wow my Dad did not permit “bribing a kid or negotiating”. He told u what was going on, admitted it might hurt a bit but he didn’t want a scene. He was harder on himself. All 5 kids understood. Saved a lot of stress for everybody. No lies, no surprises.

I remember when I got the end of a finger removed(believe it or not, kicked off by a pony while in a cart. Put my hand on the willow bar). Obviously rushed to the doctor with finger tip. Dad literally simply held me down during freezing and stitching. No promises of anything, simply get it done.

Why are you letting a 4yr old tell you what to do? And why are you taking him to get ice cream and a toy? He’s going to keep doing it because of all the stuff he’s going to get. The mother needs to hold him down so the doctor can do his job. Now if he fell and hurt his ear that’s totally different. Get him ice cream or a toy. If this kid was in martial arts you could delete this entire part because kids in martial arts are more mature than other sports. Yes they are in pain but they wouldn’t have had a tantrum like that little brat.

Told her because I love you & I don’t want you to loose your arm so you will let them take care of you. Asked do you understand? She agreed she didn’t want her arm cut off.

I’m praying for the gentleman with the SEVERE arm injury. My left shoulder has been replaced three times . There’s not enough bone left to a fourth replacement. I have a GENETIC DISEASE that affects my joints , and my internal organs. It’s even affected my brain yet alone everything else.

Absolutely! I remember as a small kid having to have not one but TWO injections in my hips at one time because I was extremely low in iron. The start of a whole series of iron shots. The second shot was some other medication I needed to have. I fought the nurse, doctor and my mother like a little wild thing, but there was no mollycoddling whatsoever. They held me down and gave me the shots. No questions asked. I think I was about 4 or so. It got me over my fear of needles. LOL!

When it comes to kids. They get bodily autonomy until it becomes a medical hazard. Then it’s not “will you” it’s “you will”. If she doesn’t do it conscious he’ll have to do it sedated which is far more risk for him. You hold him still then reward the bravery. If you start bartering with health the kid will walk all over you non stop. ETA with Betty. This is why I always fight to see my relative before they go for testing “well she’ll just be a second” I don’t care. Nothing in that room could scare me or upset me more than NOT seeing my relative. She died thinking her son had to stop to get a snack before seeing her. Even though he wanted in to see her. And she was obviously looking for him. Frustrating. I know time is tissue but she’s had chest pain for 3 days and chose not to act on it. Nothing is going to change that hasn’t been permanent damage in 3 days of chest pain.

I don’t remember being given options or much leniency as a child. Old school wasn’t always nice but we also didn’t spend much time in hospital getting simple things done either. In, see it, do it, get out.

The compassion from hospital staff here is amazing. I recently worked at a hospital in the US (in the trauma room) and a poor man was in cardiac arrest and continued to hang on the brink as we worked him for two hours. At the end, the staff had cleared out except for two nurses, and one of the nurses who was surprised he still had a thready pulse, said “d!e f*$cker! Go to the light!” And I couldn’t believe it, that was considered acceptable behavior. I quit shortly thereafter and work on an emergency ambulance now.

True, but he's very young and therefore irrational. You might as well try to convince a cat. The mother is just trying to get him to cooperate by any means possible. Anaesthetizing him or holding him down in a headlock probably aren't options. If he's still behaving like this in a couple of years, yes, that would be a problem.

I'm a phlebotomist with just over 10 years experience. Kids who are told they can say no, always say no, then they start to cry, then they get genuinely scared, and then they become utterly hysterical. Kids who are told they have to get it done, they are far calmer. If they are under the age of 10, I will have them sit on their guardians lap, with one arm wrapping over their chest in a hug and the other arm holding their arm comfortably, not holding them down and restraining them, just a secue, comfortable hold. It doesn't make the kid feel trapped, but if they flinch, I can still put the needle in. Most kids will calm down once the needle is in, as it doesn't hurt as much mid-procedure and we can say "that is the worst part, it will be over soon." Some kids won't even cry, I had a wonderfully weird 4 yer old just giggle and say it tickled last week. In my years of experience, now seeing the impact being told "you can say no" is to childrens experience having their blood taken, I actually think it is cruel to the child. They aren't capable of making that decision, and they will just feel betrayed and scared when they realised "you can say no" was a lie. Because it is a lie when its an essential medical procedure. I guarantee, next time they try to get the bead out of that kids ear, he will be more frightened, and more distressed than he was here, and I would put money on him becoming utterly hysterical with terror. Eventually, he will have to endure to trauma of being restrained by multiple people in order for it to be done, and that can have life-long consequences and may leave him with a life-long phobia of medical spaces.

Rewarding the child with a toy when it comes out not the right thing to do, he's spoiled enough. Clearly a patient that had infarcted and was in acute decompensated heart failure with all the signs of cardiogenic shock and multi organ dysfunction. To everyone saying you shouldn't bribe or bargain with kids during medical procedures, I'm just going to describe what me getting my vaccines at the age of 6 was like for context. I completely flipped out, and it took five people to hold me still enough to get them. Adrenaline made me incredibly strong, and I think if bribery gets my kid to sit still enough that they don't inadvertently kick a nurse in the face I think that's a price I'm willing to pay.

If I was that little boy and in A&E performing like that, holy crap I wouldn't have sat for a week. How on earth are the parents so careless? Zero discipline whatsoever. That being said, by his age (I assume 5 or perhaps 6 by his uniform) I had already had something like 10 invasive surgeries and spent a lot of time in paediatrics. I never met a kid who wouldn't cooperate back in my time (late 90's early 00's). I guess now with the idea of child-centred bloody everything, if the kid says no they just don't do anything. Bizarre. Also I guess it should have been obvious filling his face with a tablet device the entire time.

That little boy was quite spoiled, and I would guess that he’s an only child. The mother isn’t teaching him anything by promising him that if he let the Doctor get the the bead out, then he would get a big piece of cake or go to the Lego store and get the biggest box that they had. You have to teach them that if they do silly things like that that there’s consequences and the consequences are is that you have to get a doctor to go in with those little pinchers and grab the bead out so next time you won’t do it again or do anything foolish like that again. But when a child is an only child well, they’re treated like a prince. I only had to tell my sons once what would happen if they put things in their ears or their nose or accidentally swallow something that it would mean a trip to the hospital and perhaps an operation if they couldn’t get it out. Just warning them was enough to make them not do it. Were my son‘s perfect absolutely not, but they didn’t like going to the doctor and that was the whole point of telling them what would happen to them if they did what this little boy did. Me being a type one diabetic I have medical stuff around the house and they were used to seeing me give needles and they didn’t want any part of it so I guess it was easier for me to convince my sons to not do anything like this.🥰 I felt sorry for Betty. She probably woke up knowing that soon she’d pass away. To have the love and admiration that she had from her son was very special and very rewarding. As far as being a mom is concerned and as far as being a single parent is concerned. My heart goes out to the family at their loss of Betty, a woman to be loved and a woman that was an example of how not to let life get you down, no matter what happens. I admire her very much as I was in the same boat being a single mom of a little boy and having to work one full-time job and two part-time jobs at the same 24 hour period. He and I had a great time together for the first six years of his life and then I met my second husband and he turned out to be the best stepdad and mom could want for her child and then we had a little boy. So we raised two little boys together. Now I’m a widow of three years five months and I miss that guy so much. I’m happy Alan didn’t lose his right arm. To be hit by a train going 90 miles an hour that is something else. That he’s even here to tell the story of himself is amazing!! I wish him all the best!!☺️ The other gentleman who hit his head, I think he should start wearing a helmet because he’s going to give himself a serious head injury if he keeps hitting his head.
