In Barnsley Hospital's A&E department, resus bed two is being prepped for its next critically ill patient. 56-year-old Elaine has been rushed into hospital gasping for breath. She has a tube in her neck to allow her to breathe, but it has become blocked. Doctors must react quickly to clear her airway. Over in Leeds Children's Hospital, paediatric day surgery bed three is looking after its first patient of the day. Five-year-old Edward has come in with his mum Steph. He is having an operation which will mark the end of his treatment for leukaemia. In Leicester Royal Infirmary's maternity unit, first time mum, 25-year-old Marcell, has been admitted two weeks ahead of her due date.
She is in the early stages of labour and her baby is moving less than normal, which means the baby's health may be at risk.
Back in Barnsley Hospital's A&E department, bed 12 is with 72-year-old David. He has been rushed in by ambulance having fallen six feet off a ladder and at his side is his wife of 50 years, Di. There is concern that he may have fractured his spine.
Secret Life of the Hospital Bed is a unique 20-part series where across the 60-minute episodes, fixed-rig cameras tell the story of patients who enter four different hospitals across the UK. The hospitals are The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, The Queen's Hospital in Romford, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and The Great Northern Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. The circumstances, the ailment, the treatment, the length of stay - everything is personal to the individual involved. But the one constant throughout is the bed.

My husband also had leukemia at age 2. But that was back in 1985 when survival rates for the type he had (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) was only 5% until age 5-7 & only 2% after that as most kids relapsed.😕😞BUT the first version of the chemo they use now was just starting human trials at St Jude’s Children’s Hospital here in the US. So after 2 other experimental chemos failed to work...actually causing permanent damage to his kidneys...he was given the chemo they use now. Which saved his life!!💕💕 He also had cranial radiation which NOW isn’t common as they NOW KNOW the life long issues it causes due to studying patients like my husband. Due to the high doses of radiation to his head/brain & the first 2 chemos he has a lot of life long issues. He goes to St Jude’s every 1-2yrs for further testing in their Life Study so they can ID issues the treatments caused him & try to reduce or eliminate those issues for future leukemia patients. 💕💕

And yet, I know parents today who have chosen to pursue "natural" treatments for their child rather than chemo. It makes me so crazy. I hate to imagine how it would make you and your family feel to have to face people willing to take that risk with their child's life.

I can totally understand why David was out there climbing ladders at his age. If my husband still looked as young and amazing as his wife does, I could easily forget how old we really are. It's not that he looks particularly old and frail. It's just that she looks so young and fit. Even if she married at 5 years old, I would still think she looked way too young to have been married for 50 years.

Isaac's mum is exactly right! As the mother of two sons with Down syndrome (one biological, one adopted) there is no need to cry about the diagnosis. That's easy for me to say now, but I did cry when our older son was born 21 years ago. It took me getting to know him to realize that he is a precious human being. And those like him are people, just like anyone else! Yes, they have challenges, but they also have a great deal to offer their families and communities. It's tragic that nearly every pre-born baby diagnosed with Trisomy 21 is now aborted. We live in a truly sad world.

Why are they not teaching the trach patient and family how to suction it? Or why haven't they put an inner cannula in so the family and patient can just remove it, clean it, and put it back in. EMS should also be able to do this. Waste of resources in my opinion, this is something that should be fixed at home. She is going to die from hypoxia one of these days, this is really a dangerous situation when the family doesn't know how to care for a trach, or if there is no one else with her to clear it!

I think they said she panicked and went to hospital to get help there. She probably does have an idea but when she gets overwhelmed and can’t breath she panics. Plus I’m sure there is a number of reasons it could become blocked or infected so getting it checked out is reasonable. Plus they can give more training if this is a slightly different situation and they can help train the soon to be daughter in law and any other new staff. I’m training to be a nurse so for me as unpleasant a situation that it is it would be a great training situation for me.

I choose to believe that the doctors are perfectly able to take care of her appropriately. You have no idea why she has the trach. No idea of her particular physiology. No idea of much at all, actually. But if you feel the need to act like a medical professional, you go right ahead and embarrass yourself, Betty. I’ll just continue to trust the on-site medical team.

If Elaine could lose 75 pounds it would greatly improve her quality of life. Daughter could stand to knock off about 50-75 pounds also. Too much weight contributes and aggravates a myriad of health issues.

You know, every woman when they’re pregnant wishes for their baby to be absolutely perfect. And, the day they give birth and the doctor puts that baby in their arms, it doesn’t matter what that baby looks like, it is perfect because its theirs and they love it.

Awe Elaine is such a sweety. Im still watching so not sure yet but I wonder if she meets criteria for a lung transplant? I have health problems and I know how hard it is to keep your sense of humor up many days. Love her!

My son had ALL at the age of 5 and spent about the same length in treatment,he had a few problems with catching any illness that was floating around and really impacted his immunity and then had to have a surgery on his nose and then things were much better…big relief and much happiness. He was able to graduate high school and is now the supervisor of a local lumberyard. Con grants on your sons graduation from treatment! 😄😄💜

I hate when they stick you in the hall ways. I think it's tacky & more germs probably spread throughout the hospital making others sick as well. But I don't know about spreading more germs?

I'm a nurse. I agree that waiting in a public hall can be disconcerting. However, we do put patients in the hall for several reasons; no open beds in rooms, decrease the anxiety of patients since they are surrounded by others, keeping confused folks from wandering or falling and actually keep a closer eye on them. We have a full range of Aids, Technicians, Doctors and Nurses that pass thru the corridors that may notice something 'off' about the patient or may be alerted by them as well.

How is it possible that not a single person noticed that David never once laid his head back onto the bed? He clearly was unable to do so. It was always several inches above the sheets and they didn't even give him a pillow. If you don't believe me, re-watch all the parts with him in them and give me the timestamp where his head was in contact with anything other than his hands. I can understand why his wife failed to notice, but the health care professionals should really be made aware of issues like this. It's very common in senior patients. Sadly, it is even more common for patients from that generation to simply endure discomfort rather than complain.
