It’s obvious, by position alone, that baby one was born, baby two was pushed out in the coffin and the third baby was never born out of the mum. It’s crazy that you can SEE that just by positions alone. 👀 Sad, but a scientifically cool thing to see. This is not something seen often I’m sure. Well done ladies 👏🏼☺️

I have watched many episodes in this series and have enjoyed all of them. As a nurse who also studied midwifery I knew the outcome for mother and babies was likely to be grim. Most triplet births are delivered prior to term and by Caesarian, this is the same even for twin births. Also I am not surprised that the DNA was not found from the bones of all individuals. It must have been an awful time for her family. But amazing for us to learn about the woman and her three babies. Thank you experts and the people who fund these programmes. An unusual and really interesting case.

Jane Pickford ....2,000 years ago the mother never lived. A cesarean was only done on a dying or newly dead mother. It wasn’t until the 14th century that it was recorded both mother and baby survived. Triplets would have been nearly impossible. Twins were hard enough.

I wonder how hard it was to get Sue Black, forensic anthropologist extraordinaire, to appear completely baffled and exclaim that the baby between the mother’s thighs was going to be incredibly difficult to explain. The producers should’ve upped her salary just for that one.

That poor woman must have really suffered. Three or four days in labour with three babies , one stuck in the birth canal. She must have been in agony. I really feel for her. It is a powerful, and eternal thing about the story of Womanhood at its best. We see a woman crying in the loo of a club, and we console and support her as if she was our closest friend. We feel the same sympathy for a woman who lived two thousand years ago, as we would for a woman living now. Thirty years ago I had just given birth. I was young and completely alone. With no one to bring flowers, my hospital cubical was sparse. A woman in the ward next door gave birth. Her husband was in prison, but she was surrounded by friends and family. She was about to go home, but before she did she stopped off at my ward. She gave me her flowers.

It was annoying that the producers of the show dragged this case out. This team has some of the smartest and best people in their fields and the producers made out to be idiots. I think the only reason that they went along with it was that the show was paying for all of those expensive tests. I am a retired American archaeologist and I knew it was a coffin birth as soon as I saw the first pics. I suppose the producers thought it made the show exciting and get more viewers. They were right about that. One of the women remarked about them beining in the news with this case. That statement means that the producers were right about making them pretend that they knew nothing about why the babies were where they were. I'm just grateful that they didn't make this team look like absolute idiots. I don't know why they took this program off, it is so very interesting.

I'm sure someone tried to save the poor women, but such a birth was beyond a midwife at the time. Poor girl & how sad for any older children she left.

Besides, burial so old, a woman and three newborns with no sign of trauma - what else could it have been but death at birth? There was no C-section back then. At least not the kind they did on a mother while she was still alive. The answer about the death was 99% predictable. It was interesting to hear what life was like, based on their previous and other findings though. But no miracles about the body of the woman. Childbirth death, delivery complications. Thank God I was born now, and not then. I’d be dead too after first try to have a kid.

You know what bothers me? They hear 'deviant burial' and instantly everyone's thinking 'was she a deviant? was she seen as a deviant?'. Our brain makes such intricate connections and jumps to such conclusions, even with so-called neutral, unprejudiced scientists. Even when the archaeologist (with the piercings!) told one of them "it doesn't mean she's a deviant, it's just... a deviant, unusual burial".

The incubators were not in working order in the hospital they were born in so they were transferred to another hospital 30 miles away . Despite weighing 3 and half and 4 pounds none survived the journey . Many of the women who have Caesarians today would be in real trouble without surgical intervention . I love this series but this episode was... Infuriating. Like most people I made the determination that the child underneath the women was likely an unborn childin breach position and she was likely on her side because she was heavily pregnant. I don't believe at all that the scientists didn't also make this obvious observation into the possible reason for the way the bones where laid, of course they did. I hope they were paid well to look like they had no Idea. Insult to the scientists who did the work and the people who watch the series

Seeing the size of the babies' skeletons, my first thought was death by childbirth.

Realistically, what are the chances one, much less all three, would survive to the age of five, and what are the chance of multiples would survive to the age of 5?

Why is it obvious to me this woman died after giving birth to the first triplet? It was all so clear from the positioning of the skeletons. Usually I like the show but this seems like people needed a shocking show and played a bit dumb. 😑

I had my twins naturally with no pain relief. It never occurred to me how hard it is for others. That poor woman must have suffered greatly.

To me, because I have degrees in psychology, it looked like they tried to bury the mother looking at her baby while in death. It makes sense they buried her on her side, only because in life most women pregnant sleep on their right side, not on the left because of the heart. I think when they were burying her the 2nd child finished coming out on accident when they were carrying her body to the grave. They had no idea a 3rd child was still inside her stomach. She would have been a tiny woman and Nowadays we induce labor a bit early to save the babies and the mother but back then they couldnt do that. Also, it's possible they thought she had twins and had no idea a 3rd baby was still in the stomach. The Roman's always travelled with prostitutes but this woman was a bit older. Late 30s means a geriatric pregnancy so they probably tried to save her but in the end could not. It looks like they felt sorry for her and tried to lay her with care and with her 1 baby she successfully delivered but it may have already been dead. It's possible she was married and already had kids with her husband and this pregnancy killed her off.

They were put in isopropyl alcohol and kept in a museum's dusty basement. One big jar and three smaller ones. Brought out on school excursion days and by pro-rights campaigners.

Are the police usually called when one finds skeletons in their yard, that appear ancient? Just curious 🤔 Thanks for sharing!

Usually yes, the first thing when someone finds bones no matter where they call the police xD Even at the case of bog bodies and Otzi the Iceman the police was caller first than archaeologists
