This is a layman’s question, but how can one tell in what direction was a person’s throat cut?

As I understand it, the initial cut would be more shallow and lead to a cut of more substantial pressure and depth. It’s assumed that would have made Jack right handed, if he preformed the cut from the back. This would also allow the torrent of blood from the jugular vein to spray forward and minimize his own contact with arterial spray. This could have aided in his escape by blending in with the early morning hours of a Whitechapel working population.
