I served in the U S Air Force At Ramstein A B, W. Germany from 1984 to 1986. On a visit to Munich, I took a tour of Dachau, what a sobering experience that was. The best part was leaving because you are overcome with a hatred for those who took part in the holocaust.

They'd make an example of you by torturing your entire family in front of you, then they'd do very unpleasant "example" things to you for standing up to them -- all in front of your entire community waiting their turn. Use your imagination. I'm sure they did. If you don't shudder at the possibilities, you're not thinking hard enough. Do you really think those lining up "willingly" in the pits didn't know this? They knew the sadistic brutality that could be unleashed on them and their loved ones was far worse than a simple bullet to the back of the neck. They went because they had no choice. That is what makes it so harrowing, so enraging and so incomprehensible to us. Also remember that these scenes were filmed by the perpetrators for their own self promotion, training and eventual internal review to determine how to better annihilate an entire race more efficiently. Recommended reads: "Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland" by Christopher Browning, and "Masters of Death: The SS-Einsatzgruppen and the Invention of the Holocaust" by Richard Rhodes, if you would learn more.
