Banja Luka may not be the first city on your travel list but, as you’ll find out in this video, it’s a really charming city with some fascinating history.
To start, this city in Bosnia and Herzegovina doesn’t really feel like a Bosnian city at all. From the people driving around waving Serbian flags to the Cyrillic alphabet and Serbian writing everywhere, this city feels more like it fits in Serbia. It’s actually part of the Republika Srpska, one of the two main political regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina made as a result of the war in the ‘90s.
While it is a majority Orthodox Christian Serb community, you will still find Catholic churches and Muslim Mosques around the city, though this is a relatively recent addition after the Mosque was destroyed during the war.
We found the people of Banja Luka to be incredibly welcoming and happy to talk with us (at least as much as the language barrier would allow). We can definitely recommend this city as a good place to visit!

Hi! We are Marshall and Sabrina, a couple from Colorado who are eager to see the world! We quit our jobs and packed our bags to pursue a life of full-time travel.
Our travels began in 2022 where we spent a month and a half navigating through new territory and adjusting to living out of a suitcase. After taking a year to build up our savings, we boarded a plane with one-way tickets to Europe!

Good to know they're more strict about clothing at religious sites here. Never would've guessed that. Oooo secret passages and tunnels, how fun!

We learned that bosnia in general (not just the religious sites) is a pretty conservative country. We didn’t really notice it as much in Banja Luka, but I ended up wearing pants most of the time even though it’s still very warm here so I felt like I fit in a little more. In most of the places we went, there were very few people wearing shorts

Looks totally amazing, and what a great story about the memorial church. This seems like the kind of place we would love to visit - hopefully one of these days!

"To start, this city in Bosnia and Herzegovina doesn’t really feel like a Bosnian city at all" Bosnia is just what you saw. It's Serbian, It's Croatian, it's Bosniak Muslim culture.

Most people in Banja Luka speak English, there shouldn't be a language barrier.
