Banjo lesson #6 - Hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides. (Beginners tutorial - frailing/clawhammer banjo)

In this episode we move on to techniques with the fretboard hand. Hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides are three techniques that add so much flavour and fullness to this style of playing. So play around and have fun with them :)

Hey everyone :) Welcome to the banjo ranks! I'm Banjo Jen - a singer-songwriter from Sheffield in the UK. I don't really play loads of old tunes (even though they're cool) and I don't focus overly on too much theory or technical aspects. But I use the wonderful frailing banjo style to play and create songs, and - most importantly - to play for fun. So I hope that I can help you to do the same thing and get enjoyment out of this fab instrument if you're just starting out (just be aware you will always be the butt of jokes in folk music circles if you play the banjo!). Thank you so much for these lessons. I have been working on learning banjo (mainly bluegrass) for ages and have just switched to frailing. I love your methodology of not playing from tabs and for the first time I am working out where to put those hammer-ons and slides for myself instead of relying on notation telling me what to do. Any suggestions on how to get the right hand to quit stopping every time the left does something other than play a chord, weeks of practice and no improvement that I can see?

I’d say try to do the frailing strum just in G without anything with the left hand for a while, then when you’re really in the groove and in time keep looking at the right hand but throw in the hammer-on on the string you’re striking. The brain often will focus on what it sees, so if you’re looking at the left hand that might be why the right hand pauses. Try having the left hand positioned over the string you’re going to hammer on or slide so it’s ready to go without having to look at it. Might help!
