So, to fully explain the styracosaurus that went to WitchyWorld (her name being Scrut), now that you’re up to this point (and it’s not fully explained if you don’t get the flavor text): She wanted to go to WitchyWorld, but her mom forbade her from going, as it was dangerous. So, Scrut stole her Mom’s purse, took the train and went. When she got there, the staff thought she was a monster, so they captured her and locked her in the Cave of Horrors, which is where you found her.

I have to say, and y'all can kill me for this: To me, having to collect every single note and Jinjo again because you died with 90+ in Kazooie is far worse and more tedious than any of the backtracking in Tooie. Yes, I know they changed that in the Xbox version, but I still have to say that (sorry Jon! love you guys though). Also, Tooie is a lot less strict about how much it requires for completion in both notes and jiggies. Ah, good old Grunty Industries. I think I just really like factory and industrial levels in games and even though it can be confusing/tedious at times, it keeps enough variety with just how dang much there is in this world that I enjoy it. Actually, now that I think about it, I do like Rusty Bucket Bay in the original as well (despite what I said above, I think the world itself is pretty cool)

Notes in _BK_ were essentially just _SM64_ coins with a slight twist, Rare was trying to make them more important. They _definitely_ learned that if you make them necessary instead of optional, they should actually stay collected after you collect them, for sure. As good as it was, _B-K_ was at heart still just an extremely good _SM64_ clone, and it shows if you poke at it enough. (This definitely isn't a bad thing, though, copying one of the best games of all time still means you're probably going to end up with a pretty good game. ;P)

Tooie also does a lot of things like not making you revisit the Styracosaur Cave to actually collect that jiggy. You still have to visit it at least twice in order to get everything (once as Mumbo; once as Banjo and Kazooie) and figuring it all out could take more trips, but they could so easily have made it worse. Imagine having to go carry the dino from Witchyworld to the train, or not having the swap cloud in the Terrydactyland station.
@OnlineVideoSurfer

This is an important point. Banjo-Tooie is very labyrinthian, but if you're *just* trying to beat the game, it is nowhere near as strict in terms of its totals. You can skip a lot (maybe all?) of the world swapping, and approach the game like Mario Odyssey. Collect everything you can, but don't worry too much if you miss something if you're not having fun collecting it all. Especially since there are quality of life improvements like not losing all your notes if you die. Now. of course, I think people want to see everything, so that does add a little pressure to Team Lucahjon, but for your average person you don't need to worry about getting everything. Also, Grunty's Industry is gigantic - and very dickish at times - but unlike the last world it's not just big to fit the scale of the world. It's big in a very purposeful, puzzly way. If the previous world is like Hyrule Field - almost big for the sake of big - then the next world is more like the Water Temple. Matter of taste if you like it or not (I think it's wonderful), but its size serves a different purpose.

I'm one of the weirdos that likes Grunty Industries! Not gonna lie, big part of that is because of the music, I love all the variations. Before you get too far into the new level, it might be a good time to revisit Honey-B's bosom (and maybe knock off the last thing in Glitter Gulch Mine while you're there). Also, fun fact: in morse code, the letter 'i' is two dits, 't' is one dah, 'e' is one dit, and 'm' is two dahs, so "item" would be "short short (pause) long (pause) short (pause) long long".

The glitch where you talk to Mumbo from the ground floor requires you to stand directly below where you normally talk to him, which is somewhere around the rim of the green light thing near the entrance, and I think you might have to be facing Mumbo as well. Maybe it was fixed in the Xbox version. Speaking of which, it _is_ weird that Mumbo won't use his healing spell in Terrydactyland even though that's where it's needed, as if the Mumbo pads themselves determine what spell Mumbo will use. Oh man, the episode ended before Lucah found out the first of many things Grunty Industries does that annoys people. I expect a lot of "Seriously?" and "We have to do _all this_ shit?" going forward.

0:30 Good to hear you feel better Jon! As I said before I really like both Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie for different reasons so yes, the latter being less linear because you have to revisit previous worlds with new abilities to complete them is definitely a plus to me for the most part! 7:58 Ah, I see what they did here, "Which doctor?" indeed. 13:07 It's kind of weird there's an extra step to this but yeah, I always did it the intended way i.e. walking on that ledge, didn't know you could fall like this to reach it, cool! 15:58 I've never heard of that dish before so I looked it up, it looks tasty! 23:47 Yet another thing I've never heard of before, but in this case I can see why they didn't sell those in my country. 25:21 Honestly, this "cheat" could be pretty useful in every remaining world. 29:17 In the sense of the "most difficult/annoying world in the game" yes, this is arguably this game's Rusty Bucket Bay, but for completely different reasons... 30:27 ... starting with how you get inside Grunty Industries as we'll see in the next episode. I found it cool as a kid and still do, but it's undeniably confusing and that's going to be a recurrent theme with this world (as we've also got a glimpse of here with the batteries).

My big issue with the back tracking is that isnt not like a metroidvania where you you come back to explore a whole new area. You backtrack to use a new move for one quick thing to get a Jiggie and that's it. Its tediously going down a checklist instead of the feeling of exploring. I still like Tooie but its criticisms are pretty deserved.

I want to guess that some of the ways the worlds are connected are to incentivize backtracking at a certain point where you've learned a few new moves and thus can do a few things while you are there. But maybe I'm giving the game too much credit. The other thing with the new moves you get in Tooie is that many of them don't increase your movement options at all. So when you are backtracking in Tooie, you are mainly running through the worlds using the same Talon Trot/jumping that you navigated the world through the first time. A general rule of backtracking is that when you have to move through an area that you've been through before, you should have a new move that either allows you to traverse it in a different way or at least go through faster. Tooie doesn't really do this, partially because the moveset carried over from Kazooie already covers many of the available movement options. I will also criticize Tooie to no end, but it's still one of my favorite games based on the worldbuilding. I don't come back to replay it as much as Kazooie, but each time you do you appreciate it.

@@Leopoldshark The game would probably have to have been built or be modified with this in mind, but I feel like a lot of Tooie's issues could be solved if the game gave you some kind of permanent Turbo Talon Trot activation, but just heavily reduce your traction so it's only really useful for covering large, flat areas safely. I admire what they were trying to do with Tooie's scale, but it ends up being a slog to traverse through.

I think my problem with the backtracking to previous worlds to complete them is that pretty much all of the Jiggies you need to do that for are extremely simple, like using the Springy Shoes in Glitter Gulch to make one big jump, or doing a short glide to get that cavern Jiggy in Jolly Roger Lagoon. It kinda takes away any satisfaction of going back and getting a Jiggy you couldn't get before. Anyway, I'm sad that Grunty Industries is right after Terrydactyland, cause this is gonna sour Lucah's and Jon's opinions of the game even more. At least the world after that one is pretty well-liked!

I never really thought about it that way before, and that is true that many of the jiggies are pretty simple to get after getting the move. That being said, there are good later jiggies where you just get the jiggy for completing the quest and not have to go back for it, like the pigs in Jolly’s or Drippy’s quest. Idk, still my favorite game, but that’s a good way of thinking about that.

This is absolutely the main issue. Most of the discoveries you're going back to earlier places in tooie for are to use extremely context sensitive abilities to just check that activity of a list, what makes it particularly annoying in my opinion is that Tooie doesn't offer any skills that make movement more fun or dynamic: unless you are completely efficient with your routing significant portions of a playthrough involve holding forward on the joystick as you walk past content you've seen half a dozen times.

Tooie is my favorite game of all time and I love all of the backtracking. Granted, because of how many times I've played it, there's less confusion and it's more fun to go through each world knowing exactly what to do. On a similar note, I'm one of the weirdos whose favorite world is Grunty Industries. Despite that, I am very eager to see how long Lucah's positive mindset will last, because it's one of those worlds that takes a while to get used to. I'll be shocked if you end up liking it after your first playthrough of it, because I didn't at the time. The reason it's my favorite though is because I think it utilizes most of the games' mechanics better than any other world, especially Split Up. So try to appreciate that at least. Otherwise the only hint I'll give is that much like the rest of the game, if you get stuck, move on and try again later. There are a lot of separate areas in this world and trying to do everything in one area at once won't get you far.

Just to shock Jon again, Grunty Industries is my favorite world in this game. There's just something appealing to me about infiltrating the bad guys factory and messing with the goingons in it. Infiltrate is also quite literal, since you gotta be tricksy to actually get inside the factory. Terrydactyland meanwhile is my least favorite. The Styracosaurus Jiggy is just a bit too much and the world itself is just a bunch of brown rocks, it's easy to get lost in. One of the most appealing things to me about Tooie is how imaginative and out there the level tropes are, but Terrydactyland feels like a bit of a stinker among them.

From my perspective as someone who grew up with his older siblings N64, Banjo Tooie has always had this extremely grand and expansive feeling to me, no less due to the fact that all the worlds are somewhat connected, and especially the large and complex levels such as Grunty Industries have always left childhood me with sense of wonder for exploring the map, and reward for solving puzzles like no other game previously had or for the next years will have had. So while I understand the people saying how it is tedious and too reliant on backtracking, I just really wish to remind people to look back on this game through the eyes of a child who has never previously seen videogame worlds of such dimensions and where it still felt like you could explore every corner and find new secrets.

I used to love this game, but not Grunty Industries. After my most recent playthrough... it's fine, really. There is one REALLY difficult Jiggy, but everything else is just remembering where everything is, and trying to make sense of the world layout when you see something behind a wall that you can't get yet. I think you've said it a few times, but this really isn't a good Blind LP game, you might have had a different experience if not under the pressure of having to consistently make progress during the videos (or maybe it'd be even worse, who knows). Even as someone who likes the game, though, there's definitey a lot of inexcusable decisions that you just know were made to sell strategy guides for the game.

Okay okay! I'll say this as you guys are going in Grunty Industries. Terrydactyland was complicated because of the size of the level. Everything was spread out and a lot of it looked really similar and it was harder to determine what went where. Grunty Industries, while it is a large level, is like a giant puzzle. In one area you'll trigger something that only is usable in a different area. Or, you'll get the transformation in one spot but you need to discover all of its uses in other places. It absolutely can be done without a guide but I would recommend taking notes on the different things you see, just so you can keep it all together. I like the backtracking in this game from how much the worlds are connected. This is mainly due to each world isn’t totally isolated from one another and they all connect to a much bigger world, however, I do not like that the only reason to backtrack is to get one jiggy and that about it, but I do think the jiggys that involves going to another world much earlier than what you’re expected to is a neat idea as it foreshadows on where you will be going to eventually even if its a small room or two. Bonus note: I always had few theories why everyone hates Mumbo and its either by how he looks or maybe the fact that he taught Gruntilda once and since I guess everyone hates her, take their anger on him but that could be a stretch. Last theory is probably its all a gag throughout the game which is honestly the most likely scenario.

You don't have to like Tooie more than Kazooie. Just appreciate that world design, while less elegant than Kazooie, delivers incredible world building. In Kazooie, each level seems to just exist in a magic space isolated from each other. In Super Mario 64 style, they feel like video game levels and not actual places in the world. In Tooie, the Isle of Hags is home to the Jinjos and Moles who have a fierce kickball rivalry. The lagoon supplies water to both the mine and factory. You have a Mayan priest that steals relics from nearby cavemen to add to his wealth. You have a theme park that was closed down due to its horrendous safety record, but somehow bear and dinosaur children from different parts of the map want to go visit. It would have been nice to have more elegant gameplay in Tooie as well, but having this world building is neat. One of the problems with the backtracking is that Tooie does not add very many moves that increase movement options. There are three different moves that are just egg aiming and 4 moves that are just new types of eggs. Stuff like the Taxi Pack are mostly for solving puzzles. The powerups are also mainly isolated to small areas. 90% of the time, you will still be traversing the worlds using the same Talon Trot/jump. One of the big rules of backtracking is that if a game is going to make you go through an area a second time, it should allow you to do it in a different way. Metroid has the Spider Ball and Grapple Beam to make moving through previous areas both faster as well as different. Tooie had a problem because a majority of the movement options were already covered by Banjo-Kazooie's moveset. You could already run fast, fly, and double jump. It's very difficult to add movement options that both add variety to the gameplay without just replacing old moves. There are fun movement options later, but they come a bit late and are generally for specific purposes and kind of overlap with already existing moves.
@KitCloud1
@KitCloud1 Жыл бұрын
Overall agree but I think there were plenty of upgrades that could have been added to BKs movement options. For starters talon trot is not "fast", when I think fast in a large game with movement upgrades I think of the ability to cross anywhere from a quarter to the whole map in a matter of seconds like Wolf charge or speed boost in SoN and Super metroid. And until you can fly infinitely and at will, there will always be upgrades worth adding to that mechanic (no I don't care how much such an upgrade would break the game doing everything when, where and *how* the devs tell me to IS the problem).

I still have no idea where that sound originally came from or who made it in the first place, but its use here is what makes me come back to Grunty Industries time and again.

14:30 I just always assumed it was because of the Glowbo from each specific world that made the magic happen, like Wumba only allowing for one transformation each world and the Mega Glowbo allowing for the Kazooie transformation.

I like tooies metroidvania style in concept, since one of my favourite things in metroidvanias is when the different areas in the game are actually connected rather than separate, but honestly the thing i have issues with tooie for is that it doesn't really do the concept that well, like the actual connections rarely matter more than "bring an item from one place to another" or "press a switch to unlock a jiggy in another world", honestly the dino family quest despite being one of the more annoying ones to complete on a first playthrough feels like one of the best, using multiple worlds and even using the fact that mumbos magic is world specific in a cool way,( the only other time I can remember this happening only happens in the final world too), honestly I feel like I would like tooie a whole lot more if it just fully committed to the multiworld metroidvainia feel, instead of, letting you get like 8 jiggys per world and then having you move on.

Isle O' Hags wooded hollow - destroy-able slab in egg shed (not sure if it's useful depending on how the 3 S n' S 2 eggs are done) Isle O' Hags plateau - Honey B honeycomb health trade Glitter Gulch Mine - waterfall near the crushing shed. Jolly Roger's Lagoon - Tiptup's unborn child. Unobtainables: JRL - warm the piggies' pool. Cliff Top - Bird tracks near Jamjars' shortcut silo. TDL - Banjo crosses the stomping plains, Dippy seeks a beverage. Basement waste disposal - Jiggy Secret Codes - [received from Madame Grunty in Witchyworld] and "An egg container followed by Jingaling?" I will also start taking some notes of certain signs in Grunty Industries, so to begin: Need a battery? try looking here: above the world entry/exit, floor 2 guarded by Tintops, floor 2 near the electromagnet chamber door, floor 3 near Mumbo's skull. someone else explained talking with Mumbo on the bottom floor better, but it is the side of the polygonal circle closest to the bottom of the ramp rather than near the entrance. of course i still don't know if it is intentional or a glitch possibly removed in XBLA, i just happened to frequently get it with little trial and error throughout the years so i had always presumed it to be intentional.

I still think the game is good because the puzzles are a bit more complex, but I get the complaints some folks have with it, for completing the game 100% you really have to backtrack a lot. If Microsoft or Rare make another Banjo-Kazooie game (or if Playtonic wants to make another 3D-Yooka-Lalyee), they should make it like this: 1. Sizes of the world should be on the level of the ones from Banjo-Kazooie or Mayahem Temple from Tooie: not too small, not too big. 2. Puzzles should be as complex as the ones from Banjo-Tooie. 3. No backtracking! 4. Mini-Games should be included. I think the ones from Banjo-Tooie aren't that bad and overused. 5. The game should have a simple story, but like in DK64 you should have cutscenes showing up from time to time, so that you can see, that there is still a story going on. 6. The tone has to be light-hearted and juvenile. 7. A lot of funny and silly character interactions.

I feel like people hate on the next world far too much. And if you're avoiding spoilers lucah, stop reading now. . . . . . . . . . . It feels completely different from every world in both games, its going for an idea and I really like the way it was executed. From the second you start the world with the opening puzzle it is immediately conveyed that you are not allowed here. Instead of picking up random jiggies that are just laying on the floor in goofy sandboxes, grunty and her sisters have actually taken steps to protect the jiggies and you have to infiltrate and EARN your goofy sandbox by disassembling the level from the inside. It feels like this is THE world that all the crazy new mechanics introduced in Tooie are meant for.

I'm the kind of person that loves this game more than Banjo Kazooie. I kove the shift away from fixed camera angles and platforming in favor of puzzle solving and exploration. I LOOOVE going back to other worlds with new abilities, It feels like i'm given a second opportunity to look through this level, and it gives me a really strong feeling of progression. I respect that this game isn't for you, that's totally understandable. But I do hope when we get to the final world you love it almost as much as I do.

Grunty Industries is my favourite level because of how you unwrap it. I never found it difficult to navigate because of the colours and have always been impressed by the way it fits 10 jiggies into a factory level. Though I’d hardly call it an RBB 2. It doesn’t have nearly as much chaotic difficulty as Rusty does.

Okay, so Jon, the way to talk to mumbo downstairs in the green circle is to press the interact button at the top of the circle. The whole idea is that talking to mumbo doesn't check banjo's verticle location. So standing under mumbo should give you the prompt. It might not work on the xbox version, but i know it does in the 64 version

I think Tooie is really interesting because the scope of it is HUGE, the moves are expansive and some things feel right at home as things you can do (ledge grabbing, firing eggs while flying, ect). But at the same time, the worlds are genuinely enormous. You add that to needing to backtrack with future moves to complete the levels and it ends up mostly feeling a bit needlessly complicated and overwhelming to keep track of the progress towards collectibles for various levels. Hope you don't get too lost in Grunty Industries, it's about this point that the enemies respawning and being around make it hard to be in one place for too long while you get your bearings.

As a side bit of advice for Grunty Industries, if you find yourself in the Toxic Sludge around the level and no safe ground to stand on, head for the walls of the pool, so to speak. Rubbing up against the building, or the world's outer walls, or even the floating barrels that act as platforms should allow you to stand without being repeatedly damaged to eventually die. After this are more proper hints and advice for Grunty Industries. ________________________________ Also, if theres any level in this game Jon should have a floor plan/map on hand for guidance, its this one. There are distinct floors, theoretically, but some feel less like a sparate floor and some feel like 2 or 3 floors. Not that it matters much with how fast enemies respawn, but cameras activate security and count as basic enemies. The security they summon can be destroyed when the core is exposed and eggsploded. The only reason to know this is if you want to breath in security areas without constantly being harrassed for like 5-15 seconds. Lastly, finding the worker's quarters is definitely in the top of your personal to-do list, just be sure to check every room there, even if the door be closed. And yeah, for those wondering, Grunty remembered to put the switches that open the front door behind said door, so we're screwed unless theres another way in. (There is) Granted, as a kid that happened to wall my progress for over 2 weeks and I was normally pretty perceptive of that kind of indirect thinking, so good job Grunty?

I feel like Tooie was an experiment of sorts. They have a lot of good ideas and there's more versatility with Tooie's moveset than Kazooie's but I think the reason people aren't fond of Tooie is simply because it felt like it was a bit of a dumping ground for ideas that didn't work for Kazooie. I feel like Kazooie is what happens when you stick to the formula whereas Tooie is deriving from it while trying to stay familiar.

Playing this game vs. playing Banjo Kazooie really required a change in mindset for me. Rather than completing one level at a time and moving on, I had to learn to just do a quick sweep of every level and get the obvious stuff first, be absolutely sure to find all the new moves, then move on to the next level knowing full-well that there were more collectibles I simply couldn't get at the time anyway. I'm playing Yooka-Laylee right now, and this same system is getting me pretty far!

So as someone who knows way to much about FF14, there is infact poop attacks in the game, specifically the Gorillas in Hullbreaker Isle are heavily implied to having a poop attack. As well, the butt-named Dragoon mentioned actually makes comments about how he is attacking the enemies with his butt during the FATE. To add to conversation, I loved the connectiveness of Tooie back when I played this as a Child, but as an adult I can appricate their attempt at it but too many things seem like unfinished ideas or added padding. The Mumbo healing spell I dont know how I figured out as a kid since you don't get a prompt for stuffing her in the bag nor know that mumbo is the healing one outside of his home being on a cliff.

That was our thing! I never saw Astar growing up - the reason I know about it is because Jon mentioned it during the Disc Only segment of Colosseum 2021. My Canadian PSAs were Don't You Put It In Your Mouth, the Drugs song, House Hippo, and that damn uncanny valley TV that still haunts my nightmares. "I'm just a TV! I can show you funny shows, nature shows, shows about people all over the world. But you're much smarter than me! Go play outside." I thought Moon Shoes were made up for that one episode of Arthur!
