Wow the low end from the 12" Pisgah Tubaphone is quite something!

Pisgah 12 inch Tubaphone has got something special going on in there. They all sounded nice, but that one was the one I'd buy. And now want it.

I thought that the 12" Pisgah Tubaphone sounded great! Thanks Dave for the comparison.

I agree. The Tubaphone clarity and depth of sound was startlingly better than the Wonder.

All fine, professional level instruments. Their attributes all depend on the preferences of one's own ear. The 12-inch rim does indeed give a darker, more mellow tone that lends itself very well to minor or modal-sounding songs, but there are other tunes where that darker sound is less of an asset. But again, it's about one's own preferences; there are no bad choices here.

agreed. i would say the pisgah tubaphone is better for solo playing those real old timey banjo songs from up on the mountains. the others seemed more suited for actual bluegrass bands.

The Pisgah Wonder all the way. Much richer sound than the other two.

After repeated listening's my choice for first place is the Pisgah Tubaphone, second is the Rickard. To my ear, the Pisgah Tuba has a bit more harmonics (and a tad louder) than the 11" Rickard - probably due to the different rim sizes. Although also sounding very nice, the Pisgah Wonder seemed a bit compressed compared to the other two.

Twelve inchers always have a nicer, more mellow tone in my opinion.

I like them all. Favorite ring on any banjo is a Dobson Silver Bell. They sound so smooth and sweet, especially on a spun rim.

i preferred the pisgah tubaphone sound. it felt like it belonged in the mountains playing that real old timey music. more for mountain music than bluegrass.

But call me old fashioned but if I’m gonna buy a gorgeous high end banjo I’m gonna buy american. Idk. Also I like the sound of Pisgah a bit better

To me the rolled brass always sound best.

I certainly agree in this case. Tubaphone is a phenomena that I’ve been trying to comprehend. A number of people say that their Tubaphone is the warmest sweetest sounding banjo they’ve got. But based on a ton of KZbin videos they mostly sound loud and harch to me. Not having the opportunity to hear one in real life, I’ve been wondering if they has some subtle quality that somehow doesn’t make it onto recordings. Myself I have two Dobsons. At the time of purchase it was a toss up between Dobson and rolled brass based on what sounds best to me in recordings. In retrospect I probably should have gotten one of each. But that is another subject.

Sounds to me like a tubaphone really needs 12” to sound warmer. Still, the rolled brass is best of all.
