I have the Banks intake with ram air scoop on my 2006 LBZ. I expected to not notice much of a difference and probably only at highway speed. I was shocked at the improvement in off line acceleration and spool up. You really want to use cruise control on the highway because it will creep up from 65-70 to 80 mph+. The only issue is that my tire rubs the scoop on 285/75-16. I have to trim it and fiberglass over the hole.

@@ReggieRhoades I have thrown the mass airflow sensor code. From my understanding any oiled filter will produce vapor on hot days and that vapor coats the sensor with oil and eventually needs cleaned. I haven’t thrown that code in a while. I’ve cleaned the MAS with a Q tip and MAS cleaner.

I agree with your logic if you're only looking to save money. But, if you want to squeeze as much efficiency out of your mods, Banks is a great starting point, and you've already got it. Though most mods to any engine have to be "unlocked" by tuning it through the car's ECU either through a piggyback or stand alone.

No it's just a cover so you can see the filter and assess whether it's dirty enough to clean. Personally I love mine. Don't have to clean it very often and when I do, I clean the turbo as well it only takes 2 clamps to get the filter and the pipe off. Paperwork work says it's a 60000 mile filter. I'm at 40000 and it's still clean. Truck has 105000 on it.

Thanks for sharing this video. I think you saved me on this one. I hadn't noticed there was no easy way to get into the Banks Ram Air. Just checked their web site and the Ram Air for the new Ram HD truck appears to still not have any way to get into that air box. This a huge problem considering this is a regular maintenance item. Thanks to this video I decided I better go with the S&B. They have the test data showing that their filters filter better than stock paper, but you have to service them more often. I think that is a fair trade as long as this is easy. They make swapping the filter out through the top through the plexiglass a prominent feature. Your video helped me a lot and I took the pass on the Banks Ram Air and gave S&B the nod. If Banks incorporated an easy way to maintain the filter and to visually inspect it the story would have been different.

I do landscape and tree work which creates dusty environment. Issue is removing filter housing, taking tube off turbo etc. Its too long of a process and takes a long time to do. Why not have a cover on the housing we can access the filter and its out in less than 5 min? Also the rubber hose that connects the intake tube to the turbo isn't long enough. Always slips off the turbo over time. Just give me another inch of tubing and that would help. I just expect more from a company like Banks.

Have a 2015 Ram 3500. Had a drop in KN until Banks came out with the first COMMIFORNIA compliant cold air intake. I have about 60000 on the intake and filter. Have only cleaned it twice. Also have the Monster Ram and exhaust. All CARB compliant. I see a noticeable difference with all of them together. Intercooler and boost tubes coming in a few months. Nothing hard about cleaning the air filter. ONE bolt and ONE large hose clamp. If your careful there is nothing electrical to disconnect.

2016 3500 with Banks intake and Monster Ram. Everything else is OEM. I use the truck to pull a 15.5k 5th wheel. No noticable change in power and definitely no improvement in MPG. In fact, towing around the Carolinas and OH over the past couple of months it is actually averaging .2 MPG less than previous years. I'll have better data after our annual trip to FL this Thanksgiving. The most annoying thing is the obnoxious drone the intake makes while cruising and when the exhaust brake engages. Might have been cool when I was a teen but now I just want a peaceful ride.

You state that you would remove the air intake baffle. Look at some of the air flow research that has been done. It indicates you get better air flow with the baffle as it directs the air flow toward to center of the turbo. It's a physics thing. Sometimes an open tube is not as effective as a directed air flow.
@tacticaldieseldad5695
@tacticaldieseldad5695 2 жыл бұрын
The Banks intake is just a big open tube. I'm not disagreeing with you but the stock baffle was just a hollow band of plastic wrapped in foam. Looked to me that it was more to silence turbo spool up than to direct air. Also, you'd think on a turbo intake, directed air flow wouldn't matter as much due to the turbo is just going to suck in and compress the air, not put it directly into the engine as it still travels to the opposite side of the engine through pipes before going in. I'm certainly not a air flow engineer.
@blakenoble9468
@blakenoble9468 Жыл бұрын
People have argued this but as a turbine mechanic a thing to point out is the turbo is pulling air, air isn't being forced into the turbo. So pressure on the bottom or top or center makes no difference it's pulling air directly into the veins no matter the angle of the tube

The Banks intake is just a open plastic tube. No baffle. So my argument is, whats the difference between a $500 tube or a drop in K&N filter for $75 and taking out the baffle which doesn't appear to direct airflow in any pattern? Sure you may get more air with the larger tube but is it worth $500 and having to take it apart every cleaning? If they allowed access to the filter for cleaning I'd feel different.
