They didn’t send you the wrong gasket. I work in the semiconductor industry and we use long thin O-rings all the time in high vacuum applications. We have the same issue with the O-rings, but only from the people who don’t know how to install them properly. Also you have to be very careful not to stretch the O-ring when you are handling it.
@JeremyPrattigmp2u

At least I know now that it's correct. My original impression was that it was wrong, from just being such a new product at the time and someone is putting in the wrong gaskets. Now I know it's just right and Banks has updated their documentation to eliminate confusion.

@@macbook802 What, cut it?! No don’t cut it lol. A static seal will do just fine for what he did. I’d bet OP was accidentally stretching it as he seated it into the gland. It’s easy to do on the irregular glands as you move along the perimeter. I get it’s non-critical and your solution would probably be fine, but it’s just extra steps. No need to do all that extra and risk damaging it more than you intended.
@christophercain7343
@christophercain7343 Жыл бұрын
@@macbook802 that’s not necessary, squeezing the O-ring like how he did in the video is pretty much the best option. It makes the seal thicker too so that it seals better against both surfaces. Don’t ever cut the O-ring, and “don’t trust banks ever again” is completely nonsensical. The provided O-ring worked just fine, he was just installing it incorrectly. You should know this working in aerospace. I’ve never tried the microwave trick though, I’ll have to see if that works without hardening the rubber

@@fender42421 I don't get jack from KZbin so I don't care about views, actually doing replies costs me time. You have to have thousands of subs to get paid anything so this is me paying the internet back for doing good. Bank's initially didn't know what to do with this and offered to send me a new gasket when someone else there called me and gave me these directions. It's not operator error but is as intended. Based on comments this video has helped others who has the same issue and prepared others for how it's done. If this even helped one person save a small headache then it was worth it. @@JeremyPrattigmp2u the video is titled "Banks Differential Cover O-Ring is Too Long" and that is not a true statement and looks poorly for Banks. Do you not get that? I agree if no one has ever dealt with long skinny oddly curved and shaped gaskets then this is helpful for your first time. But the title is misleading and wrong. You have 118 subs lol, I know how it works, but why have such a clickbait title? which is not correct. Also parts departments of any kind the easiest way to help a customer is to agree with a customer concern and send them a knew one, especially if its not an over the counter in person deal. Because it happened a second time they probably figured well we know we sent him the right one he must not be doing it right but I just sell the parts i dont work on them, let me ask someone who knows. HOPE this now really sinks in for you. It is a helpful video for first time use with this style of gasket, who would have known stretching it to fit would make it longer rather than pushing it in to fit and seal. Title is still wrong towards banks and is just clickbait. Hope it blows up for you tho :) cheers

I build RVs here in Elkhart. It’s the same principle as a weather seal. You don’t want it short or tight because when it’s cold it would be short or stretched. So we cut it long and compress it into the channel that allows it to slide and settle. I was doing whatever I needed to do to make it look good and then I was taught the proper theory and technique needed to do it right. Everyone saying you stretched it either hasn’t learned the lesson about shrinkage or has a mental shortcoming. If I kept stretching it to fit and crimping it into place, then when it is sent to a freezing place it will shrink so much it could pull away and leave a gap at the corner.

A lot of auto parts stores sell an o-ring splice / joining kit. If compressing it still leaves it to long you cut it on a slant, not straight across and measuring carefully, cut out the extra with the EXACT same slant and glue them together. Put the splice at the top. I've used this on automotive, marine and authorized aircraft repair, it's an approved method for oil sumps and covers (not pressurized)

NEVER EVER CUT AN O RING!!
@bobjoatmon1993
@bobjoatmon1993 Ай бұрын
@@The_Vaporizer you obviously are not a professional equipment maintenance and repair person or you'd know that it's very common to cut oversize O-rings (if it has the right cross-section of course) and glue them together. In my 40 years as either a millwright or aircraft mechanic (both Airframe & Powerplant) I've done it a thousand times. I've recieved overhaul kits from both European, Asian and American companies that didn't even have any o-rings, just a spool of the correct cross section, compound and durometer material to make the orings for the equipment and sometimes even a cutting / glueing jig with, of course, their preferred glue. Some are cut square but most are cut on a diagonal. The only ones that can't be cut and glued are the Teflon (PTFE) or PP / PE ones. So maybe you learned something today.

Anyone who works in the vacuum chamber for semi conductors can show you how to do this easy. Make sure you use a silicon grease, bead it in but make sure to create little humps along the way. NOPE!!! Tuck in gasket in four spots around cover, continue to go around tucking in gasket in middle of two previous tucks until all of gasket is tucked in.

Nah, it's the right one, you just have to be careful to not stretch it at all when putting it in.

Your push forward as your pushing. You are causing it to stretch. There is nothing wrong with the part it the installer that is improperly inserting it. Common mistake of o-ring installs.

Installation method was wrong…there is a right way and a wrong way to install these types of gaskets! I installed one of these diff covers on my son’s truck with NO issues.

It's not shrinking the o ring at all. You're just not stretching it making it longer.

First problem is your running a Dodge... that being said, just silicone it on... even Dodges don't blow up the rear end enough to need an o ring seal on the cover.

Dumb question, why do people even change the factory diff housing anyway?
@JeremyPrattigmp2u
@JeremyPrattigmp2u Жыл бұрын
I changed mine because I tow a 17k pound 5th wheel and want my diff to stay cool. The other reason was to gain visibility to the fluid level and condition and make changes easier because this has a drain plug vs stock requires removing the entire housing. Banks has some good videos on factory vs other covers and their cover.

Did you do temp checks before and after change? If so what were results.
@docksidemarine4273
@docksidemarine4273 Жыл бұрын
Because they dont realize that it just takes a little bit longer for the oil to heat up to the exact same temp. A cover has no heat exchanger lol and more fluid just takes longer to heat up. But wow do a lot of people fall for it and not even question it. Oh plus gotta fit in with the crowd
@JeremyPrattigmp2u
@JeremyPrattigmp2u Жыл бұрын
@@docksidemarine4273 This cover doesn't add any fluid to the rear end and has a lot more surface area for heat exchange.l including scoops. This is the only cover to do so.

Ya not uncommon , by the time it's tugged around the perimeter they tend to grow a little. You may have to retrace (compress) a little to get slack out.
