In addition to the brilliant woodturning, casting and finishing your commentary, voice, clarity and flow without repetiton is outstanding and matched brilliantly by Brian's camera work. His angles and tracking of the work as it happens is expert. A professional standard video, great work.

Hey Tim, Those are some gorgeous ornaments, well done! A tip for the Yorkshire Grit: Turn the revs down to approx 500, then it doesn`t splatter. Then work it slowly for about two minutes, the grit breaks down slowly while you use it, resulting in a smoother finish! Take care, stay safe and thanks for sharing! /Lars

Tim, that is an outstanding piece of work. The color and finish is fantastic. Best work on a banksia pod I have seen anywhere. Way to go. Please use a good face mask when applying the CA. Use a slower speed too. I may be mistaken but I believe the Yorkshire Grit is supposed to be applied with the lathe turned off. Then after rubbing it in, turn the lathe on to remove the polish the excess. OMG, I am here to get tips from a pro and I am giving him advice. LOL. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day and stay healthy.

u can put it on while the lathe is on but u have to work it in for a few minutes then do it again with a fresh bit of paper towel to remove the excess till there is no more coming off and the same with the microfine

Hey Mr Tim Turner, I work with alumalite quite a bit and like you I use a pressure pot. What really helps me is sticking the wood in my oven at about 120 degrees to first warm it up and of course get out any moisture that may still be in there. It also helps the resin with the air issues. I have seen a better quality of turning when the wood is warm. Try it and see if that helps any. Beautiful projects!

Bravo! Encore! Great explanation, a comedian in action, excellent turning. My doctor recommended I use a respirator when applying c.a. Loved the result. Levis

Hey Tim! you're really close to 100k, which means you can be verified! When that time comes, congrats! You've earned it by making some amazing content that's not only fun to watch but educational and it gets people into woodwork and other activities in which you use your hands to build some pretty amazing and beautiful stuff. Thanks for the great content!

They are amazing. Very nice work. I apply thin CA at 500 RPM, using a blue shop towel folded once. Faster like you were doing risks creating a spray which can end up in your eye. I also never use accelerator, as I've had dark wood pens returned after 4 months because a cloudy bloom developed. Since abandoning accelerator, I've never had a bloom develop.

This was delightful to watch. I learned a great deal. Now I just have to find a source for the banksia cones. I grow them here in Hawaii but they are NEVER that large, or even close. Thank you for this!

Very cool looking holiday project. I do believe a vacuum process would help to get the epoxy fully into all the pores of the seed pod without any voids. Just my two cents worth.
@MrDonkeyface24 жыл бұрын
It takes the air bubbles out rather than trying to compress them and subsequently releasing the vacuum causes atmospheric pressure to push the resin further in.
@daboo77254 жыл бұрын
@@MrDonkeyface2 Possibly a 2 step process to fill all voids ? I've never tried this procedure
@tomcoker98824 жыл бұрын
IMHO it would take too long to get the froth off so you could switch to pressure before the resin sets up. The pressure will force it into crevices, voids and such pretty well. I think Tim explained that it was most likely moisture, which could be dried out by a stint in a vacuumed chamber. But in any case Tim did an excellent demo on how to correct those issues.

When they're fresh, banksia pods are quite soft and delicate, but I think they're treated and/or stabilised before being shipped (for biosecurity reasons) which is perhaps what makes the banksia pods over in North America so hard. If you have the opportunity to get Australian timber where you are (I'm guessing you do, given this video) I'd recommend Blackwood. It's gorgeous stuff and has a pretty unique look. Just be sure to wear a mask or respirator when working with it as its sawdust is essentially toxic.

Hey Tim, I'd highly recommend giving Gluboost CA glue a try. It's advertised as having no fumes, and after turning a hundred or so products with it, I have to agree that I've never had issues with fumes like you get on other brands of CA! They also have their own non-blushing accelerator that is excellent also. I use it with 3M Zona papers and get a really high shine on my turnings.

I feel like things are kind of going full circle in the Maker's circles with this. I remember one of your videos causing me to check out and follow Nick Zamedi, who primarily does a lot of resin turning, but I don't think I've ever seen him do Banksia pods. Always love your work.

Beautiful ornaments Tim! BTW, if you wipe the Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen on your project while the lathe is off and then turn it on to polish, you probably wouldn't eat so much of it. Just food for thought. lol
@liondirk4 жыл бұрын
Turn the lathe speed way down when applying a super glue finish. And slowly build it up with 4-6 layers of thin fast glue then quick sand then 3-4 layers of medium thickness ca glue and then polish using wet sanding micro mesh pads. You shouldn’t need to use anything after that. It is the on,y finish I use now when making wood pens or combo wood and resin pens, very shiny and very durable.

I've seen people put liners in the bottom of their pressure pots because sometimes accidents happen and then you've got a litre of rock hard resin in the bottom of your pot.
@hobsondavidmccormickjr63274 жыл бұрын
Gloves should be worn when working with resin and when you put project into pressure pot need to place project into a container in case of mold breaks so as to protect pot
