I said this before, but The Flinstones weren't initially for kids, they aired during primetime tv. They were marketed as an adult show akin to the likes of how The Simpsons and Family Guy are now. The thing is, the 50s were an incredibly sanitized time period. They werent even allowed to show a toilet on screen, let alone cartoon characters smoking, drinking, or even laying in the same bed together

It always pisses me off when I see people claim early Flintstones ads were targeting children. They were not advertising to children. Early seasons of The Flintstones were aimed at adults. They aired in prime time and was not advertised to kids. It wasn't a children's cartoon until later seasons when, after learning how many kids watched, the show toned down more adult aspects (including removing cigarette and alcohol sponsorship). It wasn't until reruns and spinoffs that Flintstones went from "Adult Cartoon" to "Family Cartoon" to "Children's Cartoon"

I remember reading MAUS I: [My Father Bleeds History] in middleschool, great book tbh one of the only good parts of middleschool. all the books that we read were amazing, The hunger Games series, Fahrenheit 451, I remember also reading Divergent and also the 5th Wave. so all books about identifying and dealing with authoritarian regimes. I also remember this one really racist girl (she was Latina but also just a huge bitch) telling me that she wished my grandparents hadn't survived the holocaust. I then had to explain to her that I'm not Jewish at all. I'm entirely Mexican

The thing with the Flintstones Cigarette commercials is that from the inception of animation up until... I'd say the 70s, cartoons weren't really for kids, at least not exclusively. They were kind of true 'general audience' entertainment. It's still really surreal to see though. I also had no idea that the same guy who made Maus also made the fucking _Garbage Pail Kids_ , talk about a 180 in artistic tone.

I think considering the fact that the characters are huge icons for fruity pebbles, its safe to say that at least nowadays, they are aimed towards children. But you are correct. When they came out they were for Adults. Still doesn't really change how weird the cigarette commercials are looking back. I can't think of anything similar off the top of my head but maybe there are some examples I am unaware of. Also the reserach was for the commercial, not the show itself. I think based on normal thought process. It was totally fair for me to assume that the flintstones was a childrens show.

On the note of referring to Flintstones as a kid' show Cartoons in the 1950s hadn't quite transitioned over to being "just for kids". In fact, many animations still had the mindset of Warner Brothers and Fleischer Studios, which is that cartoons were made for Adults in movie theaters. So Flintstones was not originally planned as a kid's cartoon, but rather an adult cartoon that kids can still watch. This is why the show is basically just an animated version of "The Honeymooners," in order to attract that adult audience. It even had a laugh track to solidify it just being an animated version of a typical sitcom. The nail in the coffin was the 90s, where Hanna-Barbera's cartoons fell under the umbrella of Cartoon Network, officially putting it syndication for a children's network.

So as a 13 year old, who has the Spongebob panty raid on probably at least 3 tapes, I wasn't old enough to understand the implications, and I think it's safe to say most kids don't understand these "suggestive" things, instead it's just parents overreacting... I'm not saying it was played all the time, but it definitely aired more than once for me to have rec it. It was after they went to a laundromat and played on a kids ride. Now chances are these airings were in a short time span, just like the infamous Squidward's toenail scraping scene, and then taken off.

honestly that kinda annoys me nowadays. most of these cases were censored because parents were/and still are completely overreacting. Kids wouldn't even understand the jokes and it makes the show entertaining for parents to watch along -like season 1 spongebob had gread adult jokes- People in this day and age are just getting dumbed down and babied tbh. For example they banned baloo the pilot bc his plane had guns. Or how every show now has to feature at least 1 gay couple(i'm not saying anything against gay relationships i am talking about how every show now has one). things were most of the time perfectly fine the way they were, but parents overreacting or stupid movements had to change everything

Fun fact about the Flintstones Winston commercial. A lot of animation cels are rather expensive. This is typically due to the popularity of the show/movie they were from, and because each one is a one of a kind painting. Animation cels are also quite rare, as they were made of materials that degraded easily and sometimes were even just burned after they weren't needed anymore. Among these rare and more expensive cels are the ones from the Flintstones Winston commercial. I've seen some of these cels selling for thousands of dollars due to the circumstances. Animation cels in general are just amazing. They're pieces of animation history and if one of your favorite shows or movies was made using them, I'd suggest potentially getting one. I've personally recreated cels from Evangelion (my favorite anime), of course using more modern materials, and they're some of my favorite things to look at.

Someone has probably said this already but the Flintstones wasn’t meant for children originally. Animation wasn’t in general. Hannah Barbara were pioneers of animation in television which is where the “animation for kids” stereotype comes from. The Flintstones family advertising cigarettes was seen as normal to viewers then and was meant for adults. At that time it was easier for anyone to buy cigarettes too. My parents recall their parents sending them to the drug store to buy cigarettes out of vending machines. Anyways make sure to look into that kind of history before making bold or untrue claims.

It's crazy, I always felt like Procrastination was oddly cut or censored. It always felt like something was missing, especially when Spongebob goes from completely discouraged to "I CAN FEEL THOSE JUICES PUMPING NOW!!! :D". You BET I was floored when the deleted scenes were not cut out of my Spongebob season 2 DVD I bought when I was a teenager! Fun fact: there are 3 episodes of the kirby anime that were banned. The first was banned due to kirby using a gun, the second one was banned due to the monster having a “disturbing design” and the last one is kinda weird that it was banned. It was banned for it’s “negative portrayal of dentists” even though the whole point of the episode is teaching kids that there’s nothing to be scared about going to a dentist.

The thing about the Flintstones Winston commercial is that when the Flintstones was originally aired, it wasn't children's cartoon - it was more of a sit-com, like the Honeymooners. Think about the themes of the show - it was all about power dynamics between husbands and wives, bosses and employees, and adult friends and neighbors. The Flintstones was a prime time television show in the time before streaming platforms, cable TV or even children's networks; there were only a few channels on TV and children's programming was on in the after-school block and on weekends, not during prime time.

I actually have the book "Maus" I just borrowed it from my sibling. It's a great book if you haven't read it. One of my teachers had the book and another one mentioned during class while we were learning about the Holocaust. Extra: If you are interested in what went on during the Holocaust, it's a great book. If you like graphic novels its great. If you're interested in the Holocaust and history in general it's great!

I used to watch Beavis and Butt-head when they used to be part of Liquid Television. There was a lot of controversy about the show when it was first released, so they had to tone it down a lot. I can see why they wouldn't want to show early episodes. The two would sniff paint and abuse animals. Just off the top of my head, I can remember them killing frogs when it was still a segment on Liquid Television, I remember Butt-head hitting Beavis across the head with a baseball bat. In the episode, Washing the Dog, they put a dog in a washing machine. There were more than a few people that wanted the show taken off the air.

Went and watched the Birds of Prey video, really funny and catchy song, I have genuinely no clue why it could possibly be banworthy. LMAO Flinststones was not a kid show back in the day, still many of the storylines in the show targeted to families had still adult themed (not in a sexual way necessarily) but like, job dissatisfaction, man clubs, debt, beef with the inlaws and whatnot... Pretty much like Barbie's original inspiration, a German sex symbol doll named Lilli whit a high sense of fashion, baby face, blond with huge bazongas.

Yea you don’t want to talk about mr. Arashi’s amazing freakshow. I read the laughing vampire manga by the same creator and it was just odd and freakshow is much worse than that. He’s know to be the one of the founders of ero-guro genre which is basically sexual horror, which is as bad as it sounds

So I grew up on SpongeBob and if they started making the edits to that episode in 2005 then I definitely missed those scenes, I was too young. I don’t remember the sandy scene or the car crash but I do remember the nose part, so maybe they didn’t edit that until later but I unfortunately grew up with the edited episode. I don’t think it’s fair they edited the episode at all because I honestly never picked up on any of the adult jokes or insulations in other SpongeBob episodes, maybe I was just naive idk
