Yeah I think "banned" is pretty incorrect here. I almost remembered the Molson Canadian one word for word, I hardly think it played "a few times" before it was removed.

Always had a laugh about a childhood memory of those delsym commercials freaking me and my brother out when we were 3 or 4. My mom called and complained to have them moved to after 8pm or something. First time I’ve seen that commercial since!

The Asbestos PSA is even more frightening when your father worked for 9 months at Johns-Manville in 1959, was diagnosed with mesothelioma 60 years later, and had a medically assisted death 18 months later. And you worked for years in a very poorly maintained building that's full of asbestos.

I remember those CSA ads well. As noted, they showed them during afterschool hours. But that one wasn't the scariest one. Others showed people falling and getting run over. And there was the metal-in-the-eye ad, which was in a class by itself.

I remember my mom recording “Frosty The Snowman” on Global and the 2 Delsym commercials were played as the first and the last of the commercial break. Those were freaky at first and when I thought about it now as an adult it was kinda funny.

I remember seeing the Molson Canadian and CHUM FM commercials. Don’t recall them being banned. I thought that the PC attack ad against Jean Chrétien in the 1993 general election was pulled by the party due to the blowback it got.

Regarding that PC Party ad: the aftermath was that the party was overwhelmingly crushed in the polls, winning a total of two seats in the 93 election. And yes, heading up the PC campaign for the election was none other than current Toronto mayor John Tory.

That might have depended on the market you were in. I remember it running on Saskatchewan stations for weeks that year, so perhaps only Ontario stations dropped it. (I'm old enough to remember when there were no beer ads on Saskatchewan stations, which changed sometime in the early '80s.)

(2) DELSYM HACK ATTACK (1989)-According to the City TV show _Media Television_ , this ad was a generic ad come up with by a Toronto company that could be used by companies for advertising (the one with the guy coughing.)

No, it was created specifically for the client agency ,Bryson Harris, for their client Delsym. I made the commercial along with the female version and the airplane version 2 years later. Delsym later sold the commercial all over the world to various agencies as a generic. It was ,in fact , banned for two weeks initially, but the case was overthrown, and the litigaters sued. I made the spots.

The hack attack commercial, which I animated and directed was banned for almost two weeks. Competing brands claimed it was exaggerating symptoms of an illness. Suit was dropped. I won two Clios and 7 Bessies for the spot, and got a phone call from Spielberg , ended up working for him for 6 years over a bunch of projects.
