I run a low magic setting. It's rare, mysterious, and dangerous, so I ban spells that circumvent base mechanics (Goodberry, Tiny Hut) or shift them to higher tier spells

That makes sense. In a low magic setting it is totally understandable that some spells simply won’t exist so banning spells is definitely the way to go

@RichtheFirst-TimeDM I've also been reading other systems, do you DM other systems besides 5e? OSE seems to better reinforce through mechanics the type of world I want to convey

No I don’t run anything else. In my group we have several dms and we each run different systems - I do dnd, one guy does dnd too, another does dnd and fabula ultima, another does mork borg, and another does marvel

@RichtheFirst-TimeDM that's interesting, I started with 5e, do you have advice for high level play? Or even appropriately challenging low level characters? I feel like 5e requires more thought on balancing than other systems.

It absolutely requires more balancing. Best advice is to start with action economy. This will help ensure both sides can make the same number of attacks each round - if it leans more towards one side that side will probably win faster. I will add your comment as a video for the future. Mind if I mention you in that vid?
