Hello! This is excellent instruction and is exactly what I need. For some reason though, my Punam bansuri flute is a half-step lower in pitch than the flute you are playing. What key is your bansuri based in?
@bansuribliss2 ай бұрын
In the video description you can see the pitch of the tanpura. Don't ever expect your flute to be at the exact pitch the flute maker said it would be at, as the flute maker holds the flute differently than you and the temperature is different as well.

Thank you!. What is the Sa in that bansuri? I can not follow with my E Bansuri.
@bansuribliss4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sebastian it is an F bansuri. Follow along with your head rather than your bansuri. Understand the music then pause the video and with your tanpura set at E play what I taught using the same fingering I use.

I almost always state the pitch in the video descriptions. I was using an F flute at F +8 cents.

Sir, how come your second register is so "quiet"? Mine is ear piercingly loud (unpleasant), I have to push lots of air to remove the hissing sound. Maybe my airstream is not tight enough, and if I tighten it then I need to use less air, and therefore it will not be so loud? I bought bansuri inspired by your bansuri, in the key of F (80cm total, 72cm from blowing hole to flute end). It has 7th hole on the side, like yours. But the 7th hole for the pinky is 14cm(!!) from my index finger position, currently, I struggle to cover 4-7 holes at the same time with my right hand. It s possible only if I cover 6-th hole with the 1st joint of my ring finger. How far is 7th hole from your index finger position (4th hole)?

Hi. To control the volume of your high notes requires a lot of practice. First you need to be able to play the high notes well at any volume. Then you can focus on playing quietly. Perhaps first you should see if you can play low notes quietly. Like everything, awareness comes first. Once you are aware, the change will follow, given sufficient practice. As for the 7th hole, most people incorrectly assume they cannot reach it. Really they just need more time practicing it. Watch my two videos all about the seventh hole. Also note that most flute makers do not play seven hole style and receive few requests for seven hole flutes; as such very few flute makers know where to put the seventh hole and many unnecessarily place it too far away.

Sir I've been playing since 2 years when I saw your video on KZbin. I too play on a f scale bansuri and slowly building a grip on the alankars and practicing ragas . Started with yaman and bhoopali but still not able to do justice to the structure of raga. As a learner with no guru, please guide me. Am I lacking behind without a guru?
@bansuribliss5 жыл бұрын
Your struggle to improve emanates from your not seeking out a guru. There are no self-taught masters of Indian classical music

Hi dr. Can this Raag play from GG scale flute..?
@bansuribliss3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Flutes do not have a scale. We can play any scale we want on a flute. The note at which the scale starts is called the key (or tonic). Any raga can be played from any key. Just set your tanpura accordingly so Sa of tanpura equals Sa of flute.
@thanngasanjeewa64593 жыл бұрын
Thank u for ur reply, but still i have a question on that, if flutes do not have scales, what is the meaning of flute categories such as "AA , A1, CC, C1 , BB ,and so on ( im from srilanka 🇱🇰 )
@bansuribliss3 жыл бұрын
I have never heard of any of those but none of them are scales. Scales are combinations of notes.

Dr. Which scale of flute is this ?
@bansuribliss5 жыл бұрын
Flutes have no scales; the flutist can play the flute in an infinite number of scales. They are tuned to a key, (the first note of a scale). The key is F (Sa at three holes closed) and my tanpura is tuned at F +8 cents. I always give this info in the video description.
