The stereotype is not unfounded. I came across some cramped and grungy ones when I spent way too much time exploring Akihabara. One of them had a screen playing a video demonstrating the internals of an expensive robotic contraption, a discoloured display piece that had been handled by a few too many hands, a wall covered in anime themed devices of every conceivable shape and size, and a panty vending machine hidden away in a little nook. Oh and multiple floors packed with DVDs.

It’s probably one that’s deliberately trying to avoid the stereotype. I remember dating a girl in my 20’s who wanted to go to one of those shops to get something and said it would be hilarious to bring me coz I’d laugh my ass off (she was right, it was fucking hilarious, especially the like, 6ft long schlong hanging on the wall behind the counter! 😂) and the place had all black frame, the window was a black tint, the door was black and it had no signs on the outside, so from the outside you’d have no idea what it was or that it was open… walk in though, it was dark - but REALLY clean and well laid out in terms of not like cluttered and shit - but there were like all sorts of dildos and flashlights and shit all around the place, different kink clothing and shit, and to me who’s a basic vanilla dude I was just laughing like an idiot, trying to get my girlfriend to have a “sword fight” with the dildos and shit

Been into a few European shops and all three have been along the lines of the stereotypes. Cramped with all kinds of merchandise. No old strange guy however but rather a bored guy in his late 20s playing on his switch, a very enthusiastic and sex positive guy with lots of recommendation and an older woman that couldn't give less of a fuck.

Honestly that's how any such store should be. Typically, said stores are dingy, poorly lit, posters covering the windows etc. with way too much merch crammed into some small space. An open air concept makes this look like its just part of the rest of the mall.
