There are so many antennas to chose from out there, how do you know which ones are good? Today I sample five, plus the rubber ducky and try to give you a good recommendation.

This is a great idea ... then we'd have no trouble finding these various antennas ... everybody has their personal preference. I personally, would prefer using a smaller antenna vs taking my fly rod with me and looking like I'm going "fishing" with an antenna that drags birds out of the sky when I use my handheld.

This is a great video and really informative. But I'm wondering how the Nagoya 771 compares to the new Abbree antennas (I have a one-meter one) in an outdoor test just like this one. I saw your other video about the Abbree, but all it shows is metered strength in basically "lab" conditions. Could you run the exact same test with the 771 vs. the longest Abbree antenna with a UV-5R?

Good video's & relevant topic. Two things to consider: 1. Antennas and/or radio could be mismatched. => The best antenna for your radio might not be the best for another. 2. Using a radio inside a vehicle will cause interference => Moving the antenna just a tiny bit could change the directivity/beamform significantly.

Reminds me of the question from the exam pool: T9A07 (A) What is a disadvantage of using a handheld VHF transceiver with a flexible antenna inside a vehicle? A. Signal strength is reduced due to the shielding effect of the vehicle B. The bandwidth of the antenna will decrease, increasing SWR C. The SWR might decrease, decreasing the signal strength D. All these choices are correct

Please test the NA-24J (UHF / VHF Ultra Light Whip 16.2" High Gain Antenna) against the NA-771. The NA-24J solves the excess mass issue that knocks the radio over. Plus for hiking it does save about a 1/4 lb of weight.

May I also point out that discounting the short "stubby" antenna was a bit (shall I say it) short-sighted. First, you were testing on 146MHz where that particular antenna is at it's worst. Had you been in the 70cm band at around 446.000 I believe you would have seen much better results. I use BF-888s radios for low power short range work between the wife and I (she's a Tech, I'm an Extra) and those radios with the exact Diamont SRH805S antennas work great for their purpose. In fact, I can hit and hold a 70cm repeater using the BF-888 and the SRH805S from easily 10-12 miles away.

You make great videos. I have the 771 and I like its range. The fit up to the BF*-HP at least made me modify a small washer to help stabilize the base and make definite positive contact. I even used a small FINE file to lower part of the shield on the radio. Yes that is the sign of low quality, but I do not mind spending the time tweaking my portable, that is so tiny and light. Thanks for helping out others.

I use some Anytone radios for my EMS squad, since the AT-3318 series can do 2-tone paging. Also, comparing antennas from one brand to the next, make sure you remain within the specified frequency range of antenna, i.e. if you compare 2m antennas, only use antennas rated for 2m. after you get the results of best to worse, then look at price, size. It is not smart really to have a 3 feet antenna vs 1 foot and have S20 vs S18.... then the smaller one is the better one since for a delta of S2 its a 3rd of the size.....

Jsut a comment why the antenna workd well when folded in Higher frequencies..... the wave lengths are shorter in UHF, thus, shorter antenna becomes more efficient. The tape antennas are very durable, and can last a very long time, but one should never force a tight bend as it will result in a fold in the tape curve and then the antenna is floppy.

From 5 watts to 8 watts or a 1.6 ratio will only give a additional ~26% (ideally). Not worth it in most conditions. 1 watt to 5 watts or a 5.0 ratio will increase the range by ~2.23x or ~223%.

I would love to see a follow up test done on UHF Simplex. My understanding is that the stubby diamond is a fake, but from what I have heard, it still has ok 70cm performance. There is a great review on amazon showing tests with a spectrum analyzer supporting this. Also, I noticed that the stock "rubber duck" antenna antenna used was the shorter Baofeng unit. Do you happen to have the slightly longer one that ships with the UV-82? My UV-5x3 and BF-F8+ both came with the slightly longer stock antenna and I'm wondering if spending money on an aftermarket antenna is really necessary.
@xxM5xx
@xxM5xx 6 жыл бұрын
YUP. That stubby Diamond is a fake / counterfeit. I have one too. Fake. @FourBinLabs I think the Baofang UV-82 antenna you are referring to is the Baofang model A-V85 antenna. I have the A-V85 also and they are pretty good for xmit and rcv on 2 meter and 70cm. My A-V85 antenna came bundled when I bought a brand new BF-F8+. The genuine NA-771 is a better performer compared to the A-V85. The genuine NA-771 is way longer too so it might be unwieldy at times. I switch antennas depending on what I'm doing. Sometimes the shorter A-V85 antenna is good enough (I'm working close) sometimes I need the range and must switch to the longer Nagoya antenna. The fake / counterfeit NA-771 are bad. This video shows the genuine NA-771. For receive-only (scanner or non-licensed persons who will not be xmitting) the stubby has good receive. By all means, avoid using the fake SRH805S to xmit.
@FourBinLabs
@FourBinLabs 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. It is the A-V85 antenna. After watching this video I went out and bought one of those ExpertPower antennas. Works a bit better than the A-V85. While I was shopping, I came across an ExpertPower antenna that is about as long as the NA-771. In testing, I now believe this antenna is also a fake. It looks very similar to the fake NA-771 antennas except it's base has to two linear knurling rings just like the fake diamond antenna. Only difference is that the base (and threads) are all black. Also, when the threads bottom out there is still a gap between the antenna base and the radio. Stay away from this antenna! I tested it, it performs slightly better than the fake diamond antenna, and worse than the A-V85 and real EP standard length antenna. Interesting note, I bought the real and fake EP antennas from the same seller

I had an expert power antenna and I bent it. Now it belongs to my brother. He never transmits anyways. I have not set up a home mobile rig before. Still fairly new. I have a Kenwood 282? 2 m mobile. I plan on getting a cheap power supply on amazon for 20 bucks and you have to wire the power plug. 30 Amp comes set at 12v buts its Adj - + 10% My question is, what is the must affordable but decent way to mount your antenna? Also an affordable antenna. I am legally blind. Thanks for any one who throws any ideas my way. I live in a trailer home in a park.

Very interesting. How do these stack up against the flat tape military style antennas?

I am struggling to understand why my Nagoya NA-771 VHF reception works great on the UV-5G plus GMRS radio, but doesn't work on the 5RM (ham version). I use NOAA channels to test reception and NOAA Den comes in clear on UV-5G Plus, but dead silent on the 5RM radio. This doesn't make any sense to me as the 5RM is an 8W radio and generally receives better overall then the 5G Plus GMRS radio. Does anyone know why this might be the case? The only antenna that I can get the 5RM to pull in NOAA is with the just the base of the ABBREE tactical. I have to remove the flex part in order for it to work, but the base works great.

WIth simplex communication using BaoFeng UV-5R on 154.95, The stock antenna preforms better in every condition than the NA-771. Me and my buddy are 1.5 miles apart in the suburbs. (Im new to this, any idea why the 771 is worse for me?)

With stock antennas I’m able to hear my brothers baofeng at 5 miles away at about 600’ lower elevation with a mtn ridge between us. He can’t hear me unless I walk up the hill a bit. With the 15.5” laiton we can’t hear each other perfectly.. the longest straight shot range test that we’ve done was at 12 miles with rubber duck antennas with 100% success. I didn’t have the other antennas at that time but I’m looking forward to more simplexing! :)

Trying to communicate with a Motorola CP200D from my Baofeng. I have the frequencies and can hear but can't transmit. I think I've narrowed it down to needing to enter T-DSC and R-DSC codes but where in Chirp would I enter those?

I believe under the "tone" column you need to set the right T or R DSC in chirp. I repleid to your message on Facebook too, easier to reply to me there.

Did you test any of these antennas for SWR on the frequencies you used? I like the comparison, and how you describe physical features of the land, distance, and frequency.

@5.45 - doesn't sticking the big kahuna out the window give it an unfair advantage over the other's? ;) me being a dick aside, I see the Expert is just over half the price of your Nagoya 771 but "Frequency - 144-146MHz, 430-440MHz".... ah! I should have led with I'm in New Zealand, trying to ease my way into radios via the Australasian CB plan (476-477mhz).... can you suggest a better optimized antenna for the job? Or would the Expert be near enough for any loss to be negligible? Many thanks for the easy going but very informative videos.

What is your home set up to act as an unattended Monitor viewed from the car? or at least heard from the car? If those antenna have no coil in the base, even the 17" will not be resonant on 2m. 1/4 wave is 19.5 " The others will be no where near AND will not be loading the final in the rig.

Any recommendations for Mobile Antenna? :) I use UVK5 and now waiting for another Zastone handheld, only possible place for the antenna here is the window (outside) so i use a random magnetic mount mobile antenna, gladly the antenna is replaceable so i would just have to screw on a new one, OR buy a whole different antenna...

Hi, I was wondering if you can physically tell apart the uv 5r stock antenna from the bf f8hp antenna. I have two of these radios and can tell them apart. I understand that the bf f8hp has better specs but I can't honestly see any difference and I think I "mixed" them. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi I have looked everywhere for an "XPERT POWER XP669C antenna" in the uk. Nothing on ebay , nothing on amazon, nothing on aliexpress. Can you give me a clue where you got it from and maybe I could find a UK distributor. Many thanx. Great Vids!! :¬)

For anyone who has the ExperPowert power XP-669, can you let me know what SWR you get on your Baoefeng? I'm getting 19 : 1 (not 1.9, 19!!) on all VHF/UHF bands, whereas stock rubber duck 1.2 : 1

Have you ever tried those...umm...Nagoya spinoffs (like the TidRadio) at various distances? Some of those knock-offs _claim_ to be as good as the Nagoyas, and they look and feel very much like the Nagoyas. Antennas aren't rocket science, but I've never heard any comparisons in KZbin.
