My issue is not buying cheap Chinese crap. My problem is owning it after I have bought it. If you have ever checked the spectral purity of a Baofeng radio with a service monitor, it's painfully obvious why they cost $20 or $30. The harmonics these pieces of crap emit are atrocious. Apparently the Chinese don't know how to design filters or can't do it without adding $2-$3 to the cost of the piece of crap radio. Slave lives matter!
@TheNotaRubicon Жыл бұрын
Thank goodness that all normal people don't give a flying-fig about the spectral purity or harmonics of this or any other radio - instead they laugh at people that bring up such things.

Hey, Ron, I wanted to thank you for helping advance my career. You see, a while back, I was asked to take over the development of a large expensive communications system that was tens of millions of dollars over budget. After my arrival I quickly discovered it was staffed with people like you who have heard words like 'spectral purity' but you don't have a clue when its important and when it is not. After I fired all the guys like you and brought the project back within the budget while also improving performance only where it was needed my boss gave me a promotion and a big fat raise pushing my salary over six figures. So thanks again, Ron, because it was people like you who made me so successful. I'm still benefitting today from your generous gift.

The hobby of ham radio was dying due to many things, especially when cell phones came into everyone's hands. Also, it was the current prices of name brand ham gear, being out of reach of prospective ham operators. But Baofeng changed all that and now we have more new hams because of baofeng communication equipment. Hope you both enjoy the repeaters.where you live! Don't stop learning! Get that general.class license and find a good used HF rig

short story: i was getting into HAM, don't have my license , was going to take it, we had a tornado touchdown in my county, i turned on my baofeng and was going to see what the HAM community were talking about. i found some guys talking about their cats.....i lost interest immediately . then i came across your channel. I have my gmrs license and because of your quality content, and awesome sense of humor, I'm now getting into gmrs. thanks brother, your hilarious. and i sub'd.
@JackSprattt3 жыл бұрын
That's analog with a BaoFeng, I'm honestly amazed you found anyone on there. Probably some old people who just refused to move to digital. If you get a license you can use digital modes which using local repeaters or a hotspot (personal low power repeater) can reach the world. Most local digital repeaters have battery backups or generators by them and even if their internet connection is cut can still work locally with radios in range of the repeater, so I find them helpful during storms. It'll take your handheld radio with a range of a few miles and turn it into a range of 10-20 miles depending on the repeater. Don't count it out because of a bad first impression, it's a good skill to have.

I am a licensed Ham, and I want to thank you for your time and effort to make this video. Ya did good. Where I live all Law Enforcement has moves to a trunked digital system. One thing you forgot to mention, is the range of the little Baofeng. I have two, and with the stock antenna, you'd be lucky to have a range of maybe 2 miles. And if you can get into a repeater, well some one has to be listening. Just a few things you might have forgot.

I just wanted to say, I greatly appreciate the series of videos you've shared on KZbin and I'm watching all of them in a row. I just got my uv-5r for communicating for airsoft in close proximity and in case I need to communicate in a sort of group security situation. Considering how society has degraded in the last several years in the USA it's become a possibility. Having access to weather forecasts is definitely useful for traveling by motorcycle or if there is a weather event while I'm on the road or at home. I don't have TV service. It sounds like the only unlicensed legal things we can do is just listen and that's it.

Hi Jay , ignore that old timer, i"m 67 so i guess i"m an old timer myself, been licensed myself since 1993 , have used many radios over the years, currently Icom, IC7100, Yaesu FT60, Yaesu FT70, TYT UV380MD DMR Radio , Baofeng GT3 and Baofeng UV-5R plus and to honest most of my local hams in my area in the UK also use cheap chinese radios, why?, because they work and work well, so when ian idiot tells you that these cheapo rigs are crap tell them to go and do one, I heard recently that the cheaper yaesu models in the uk ( £65 ) are actually rebadged Baofengs although the dealers are not telling you, as for the guy in this video, well his knowledge of amateur radio is somewhat misleading, scant in detail at the very least , ok maybe he is trying his best, instead he should be ecouraging everyone to take their license exams so you can join in all the ragchewing, what radio you are using is irrelevant so long as it is working in band correctly and the operator knows how to use it properly, I have two UK callsigns G7POG full licence and M3MHM Foundation licence, one day I was talking to another Ham near to where I live in Birmingham UK and he told me he had no desire to talk to a M3 station as they are not proper hams, I left it a few minutes and put another call out using my G7 call, he answered and without recognising my voice he went on the tell me how he had just been having a QSO with one of those M3 stations, and that were a bunch of w******rs, when i told him that in fact both operators was the same person he quickly shut his mouth, I quickly told him I had recorded both QSO"s and they would be passed on to Ofcom, so take no notice, enjoy your hobby , buy your rigs as and when you can afford them and just enjoy your hobby, lots of hams in the UK forget it is just a hobby , not an elitist club for all the old timers, enjoy your day and blessings to radio hams and short wave listeners everywhere, as an afterthought when i was licenced back in 1993 the cheapest dual handie I could get new out of the box was £270 and my last Baofeng I bought from Amazon was £29.99 , so just go with the flow and sod anyone who tries to knock you down , after all a Radio Amateur is the same the world over, Best Wishes and stay safe to all, Mike G7POG & M3MHM

And I got a few chuckles on your sarcasm you delivered during this video. I've been doing some research on acquiring some form of coms for a SHTF scenario [natural or man-made] that no doubt comes along everywhere worldwide and it seems that a portable ham radio would be a good choice. Since it gives weather reports, emergency services coms, FM radio reception, and of course can transmit in case of an emergency. I am even considering getting a ham license as well [on my list of things to do] Great video and enjoyed the content very much. I’ve learned more about how to actually configure and use the UV-5R from this channel than the half-dozen HAM radio “experts” on YT I watched before I found the NotaRubicon channel. Thank you.

Ya know I love your videos !! Your videos are great and informative for the newby breaking in to ham radio. . It seams that nowadays many ham operators want to be clannish and rude when dealing with new operators. Instead of nurturing and lending a hand or aid newbies with this hobby they want to hinder as much as possible. Many times the newbies are local to these tyrants and would love nothing more than to meet up and learn the right way to operate in this venue. . . I am 63 years old and lived in and through the CB heyday. . . All exciting and new and I slowly transitioned into ham. . Back then it seamed there was an endless supply of radio heads that wanted to teach and nurture newbies in proper methods. Your utube channel instills the idea that yes many hams are serious about their hobby. But you are serious about how to break into this world and do it right. . Thank you. . .

I found out about this radio by looking into emergency essentials [Georgia weather last night - this could have been handy for sure] and decided to KZbin what it was all about. This is the ONLY video I watched and the ONLY video I need to watch. Going to purchase based on this. Subscribed...enjoyed the content. thanks!
