Encouraging results. Thanks for posting. The UV-5R was my only radio for over a year while a new ham, but I did notice in its manual in late 2017 that the listed duty cycle is 3 minutes Rx/3 minutes Tx/54 minutes Standby. Anyone intending to use this rig for emergency communications (it is popular with preppers) should keep that in mind. 73 de AB3ZI

so how clean is the TX RF out on a spectrum analyzer?
@uploadJ6 жыл бұрын
The question is, do YOU know how to properly use a high pass filter to REDUCE the fundamental frequency from the radio SUCH THAT the spec an is NOT overloaded and creating FALSE harmonic energy indication from the mixer in spec an. Pls, tell me you are also brain surgeon.
@SkylerF4 жыл бұрын
@uploadJ Yes, really! A coworker at a radio station was trying to prove a harmonic emission out of a Broadcast transmitter with his “trusty” field fox and a sample port. He was overloading the front end of the poor thing and showing a “HuGe Harmonic” it’s super easy to disprove false harmonics with attenuator pads. Put a 10dB pad on it and if it drops by >10dB it’s a Ghost!!

I have a UV5R and a UV82C. Seems like the finals went out for a single band on each. The UV5R only transmits full power on 70cm and the UV82 only transmits full power on 2m. They seem to work fine in every other way. Not sure what happened as they were both cared for quite well. Moderate use. Took a few months. Trying the Wouxun radios next. They seem solid so far, and definitely have more features as well.

I guess you are the right person to answer this doubt: when using this baofeng inside my house using the original rubber duck Im able to hear the repeater (cant reach it however), but when I connect it to my Jpole external antenna (or the one quarter ground plane) the baofeng goes deaf and doesnt hear the repeater, how come?? its suppose to have better earing... tks, good video!
@SkylerF6 жыл бұрын
+Sergio Cavazos I would guess that this is due to a noise source interfering with your receiver outside of the house. Try looking with a spectrum analyzer or a sdr at the noise outside your house.

Im not using BNC, just a simple SMA female adapter for the coaxial. Sounds logical what you mention about the mismatch adapter but I dont see how that could be. The base radio that I use is a Kenwood TM-V71A and it works great with the JPole. Guess you cant expect much from a $40 baoefeng. tks
@sergiocavazos89636 жыл бұрын
but that noise is not present with my kenwood tmv71a.... tks

few minutes ago made the experiment once again.... put one of my baofengs inside my house (brick and cement, like all houses in Mexico), with the rubber duck antenna over my desk. The other baofeng whith the sma female adapter to the coaxial (normally used for the kenwood) and to the Jpole on the roof. Waited to receive a signal from the local repeater... and as expected, the one with the rubber duck over my desk received the transmission. The other connected to the coaxial didnt hear anything even with the squelch totally down. WTH ??

The baofeng has a lot less sensitive and wide open front end. It's adjacent channel rejection is horrible.

Probably not worth it, they all are made out of the same conponents

@@SkylerF good point. But that open transmission gave me flashbacks of my old 100W yaesu, forgot to screw the antenna in and well before the safety kicked in the finals gave 😂 I guess I have PTSD now

Great video! I have a Baofeng UV82 and TYT UV8000E. I transmitted without an antenna for 1-3 seconds at high Tx power (10W). Do you think that I've damaged the radio?

Thank you for watching! Although I can’t tell you for sure, I think your fine, especially with only 3-4 seconds!

Correction. You did things that any and all radio instruction manuals would tell you to NEVER DO to any radio under any circumstance, yet this radio survived it somehow. Very impressive. I still remember the days when hooligan misfits would insert straight pins thru people's CB coax cables and it would literally destroy several hundred dollars worth of equipment in seconds when the poor schmuck would key up his rig. Apparently modern HAM gear has its safeguards in place.

Well done and it says a lot for Baofeng not cutting too many corners with their hardware. It's too bad the Chinese radio companies can't do as well with the user interface, firmware, and software all of which are generally awful.

Thanks 🙏 for sharing 👏👏👏👏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@WhatzUp Momoland Great posting, Momoland! And may I say what a great video and test on the Baofeng. I have a host of expensive handie talkies accumulated over a number of years (e.g. Yaesu VX-5, Kenwood THD7, Icom E90) yet prefer to use my $25 Baofeng UV-5R handies as the LiOn battery life is much longer and they give power output in the 4W/5W region, compared to the aforementioned radios, which barely produce 2W on their NiMH battery packs. I have the same problem over here in UK regarding the slagging of Baofengs by local Hams who claim that, due to poor suppression, spurious emissions from Baofeng radios will interfere with local emergency services and aircraft radio frequencies. This information is largely put about by a local dealer who sells the more expensive Chinese radios that compete with the Baofeng, so I need say no more! Whereas the standard accepted suppression for radios is 60dB, I have measured my 3 Baofengs as hovering around 50dB, which represents a spurious emission of 0.05mW (1/20th of a mW). That’s a drop in the ocean, and for the benefit of any posters who don’t get dBs and all that, that spurious signal is equivalent to 1/50th (one fiftieth) of the strength of a Bluetooth signal! Guess how far a Bluetooth signal would travel if it was as weak as that! Barely one foot (300mm) I would guess! I love my Baofengs - I regularly reach repeaters and gateways at 60 miles distance when trekking in my local National Park - and that's with the stock Baofeng rubber duck antenna. Advice - Don't waste your bucks on an alternative antenna which costs as much as the Baofeng did in the first place!
