3 feet is my guess. I don't measure string because you can always tie on more if needed.

Criss cross as if you were doing a ladder stitch or the very beginning of a peyote stitch

you can try decreasing the number of beads in the single by 2 until it fits a little better.

The first step to tie your shoes is to make an X. One string pulled to the right and one to the left. Like that but there the string would cross to make the X that's where the beads go. The strings criss cross inside the beads.
