I used to interview Behdad Salimi at the Olympics, and it was funny how everyone thought he and his country was gonna rule the sport from there on. Hossein Rezazadeh was hovering in the background for some kind of moral support, and the whole thing just appeared set for years to come. And here we are, a new giant rules the sport like the other guy never existed. So it goes...

Lasha, I think, made lot of great athletes look like minor league players, seriously overshadowed them and maybe even most upcoming ones, as well, I mean who will snatch 220+ and if not how are you going to get even close to his records?

Iran got sidetracked in weightlifting because of politics, not Lasha. This doesn't take away from Lashas greatness but you're making it sound like he buried the country which he didn't. I admire the Iranian weightlifters for what they've achieved with little to no infrastructure and backing from their country.

@@a.b.4474I have to disagree. Yes, Iran is far ahead or Georgia in terms of overall GDP and infrastructure, but they are behind in the organizational efforts required to succeed in sports. Especially in comparison to Georgia, which is an ex-Soviet state. I’m sure you know that ex-Soviet states absolutely excel in athletic organization. They are great at conducting nation-wide programs that funnel gifted youth onto bigger stages. They are also masters at using PED’s without getting caught. That’s precisely which ex-Soviet/communist nations dominate in weightlifting. Now go to Iran… You might find a random guy who became the coach for the national team just because of his political views. He might only gives his athletes 500mg of testosterone weekly, because he doesn’t know how to run anavar, tren, dbol, hgh etc. without getting caught. So his athletes suffer. I’m sure that if Salimi had the same drug protocol and coaching that Lasha has, he would have hit similar numbers or even higher.

I enjoyed watching that whole thing. If you watch the whole competition there are two women in the audience (one blonde and the other brunette) and when Lasha would approach to lift they had their heads down or turned away. But after he successfully made the lift then they would cheer and wave the flag. I'm thinking it could have been his wife or girlfriend. It was the sweetest thing to see.

Just great to watch LT's progression here. But my question/worry is this: while Lasha looks as strong as ever, if not stronger, his fitness seems to be lagging. He was fantastic through the snatch competition, but seemed out of gas for the c&j. I'm worried he's not up to finishing strong in a full meet. In December we heard vague talk about a heart problem--from my experience he seems to present as a person with an enlarged heart or other cardiac issue. I love watching him lift and am rooting for 500kg, but I'd rather he live a long life with wife and kids. Any inside info that can be shared?

The only visible hostility is just healthy sport competition. Lasha, Varazdat, and Simon were all quick to congratulate each other after it was over and the Georgians showed courtesy to the Armenian team by choosing not to steal Varazdat's clock on his 3rd attempt even when it may have secured an even earlier victory. Naturally the Armenian home crowd favours their own lifters, but they were very respectful and applauded all of Lasha's attempts.

I don't really understand the intricacies of the Georgian/Armenian relationship but I did notice that the hometown boost definitely applied to this comparison. Armenia wound up taking more points than any other nation with Georgia coming in 2nd. Individually in the men's competition I would say the biggest nights went to Karlos and Lasha. Karlos hitting a total that would win in the 109kg cat as an 89kg and Lasha for hitting 222kg snatch so clean and winning by a large margin without even taking his 3rd lift.

This is a weight similar to what pro football players use in their bouncing, arching and screwing, cheating bench presses, with their dumbed down team mates pulling up on both ends.

It's hard to design a temporary platform that won't move at all with these kinds of weights dropped on them! We didn't hear any complains about the platforms from athletes or coaches, so I don't think there was a real problem. It was all Eleiko equipment, so these were hardly budget platforms.

@@dan-wh ok, fair enough, but its the first time I've seen the mats flying loose like that in the backroom in a international comp
