The age difference between Walters and the rest is interesting here. She's is of course bias and has her own political leanings like everyone does but she is still a dignified lady who's primary concern is the well-being of the United States as a country. In her day the identity politics was probably not as bad and the 24/7 media presence was not there. She was old school. Repeatedly in this clip she says, "can't we get away from smears?" "You have to give it to Sarah Palin for handling the SNL jokes well" and she praises governor Palin as a likable woman with a sense of humor. The other hosts repeatedly ignore her comments, brush them off, and continue to ramp up the rhetoric. It was almost like an "out with the old, in with the new" situation. Times were changing. The country was and still is losing the older generation who had different opinions but were consistent in their love of country and respect for others. Now look at us more than a decade later. When a five star general was asked recently what the biggest threat to the United States is he didn't say Russia, China, North Korea, or terrorism..........he said "our polarity."

Likely because A) They wanted to look a little balanced (i.e. have one conservative voice with multiple liberal voices). I'm liberal myself and wouldn't mind a conservative panelist so long as the person is at least intelligent, unlike Elisabeth who is clearly an airhead. Ana Navarro would be PERFECT for a conservative outlook: funny, intelligent, centrist Republican (I've had great debates in the past with friends who are moderate Republicans) 2. Bitsy usually was at the center of the fights and those showdowns brought in ratings. After a while, though, they probably figured, "Hey we'll still get passionate debates even without Hasselbeck" (Hasselbeck may have voluntarily left, per the official statement. I don't know since I'm not a regular The View viewer but I'd venture to say she was either forced out or they did not renew her contract)

I could be wrong, but I saw it a bit differently. I didn't feel that Elizabeth wasn't being allowed to talk. Instead, I feel that the other ladies weren't allowing Elizabeth to interrupt them. They knew that she often would interrupt, having an opposing view, and then they were not able to finish what they were trying to say. I think each just wanted to finish before Elizabeth started. However, when Elizabeth did start to talk, what she was saying was so off/wrong, that one or more of them jumped in to challenge what she was saying. So, at that point, Elizabeth could have said, wait! Let me finish what I was saying first, then you talk. Like Woopy did with her.

Elizabeth could hold her own. It is a tough liberal crowd. I am in the middle but not Independent, although; they have free speech as well. I am guessing Elizabeth was coached to play her part, she talked too fast and her voice was very annoying but she was not dumb. I could be wrong but I bet Barbara Walters and other producers wanted that friction. 1.) All the drama created within the show was good for ratings even though it was a lot of negativity. 2.) It was one of the first talking female shows that revealed women on the panel it was okay to express their views and the panel of women showed they didn't have to be "well-behaved," which I can appreciate. Although, during other times they came across like wild animals. I question myself, that if this were a panel of men who exhibited the same type of behavior on hot topics, would the viewer or society think twice about male behavior? I don't underestimate Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie for their knowledge and forecasting inflammatory future arguments to help to increase viewers. It was riveting at first and became tiresome. I still tape the View and watch the topics.
