The NRT People to People (P2P) reconciliation project, a USAID funded activity, has been promoting
people to people peacebuilding in conservancy areas which stretch across Northern Kenya. The
historic culture of stock theft (otherwise known as ‘cattle rustling’) is a major contributor to the conflict
in these areas. This is further exacerbated by the long running drought in the region. For generations,
the voices of the women in Northern Kenya have been sources of confidence and strength for their
men.
The sweet sounds of their songs valorized the warriors of their clans as they went out to seek
resources and upon return. But in the wake of mounting armed conflict, and losses of friends,
brothers and husbands, the women in areas such as Baragoi, in Samburu County have begun to sing a
new tune. One of peace. This project seeks to document these voices and the women from which
they come.
