Sphinx of the Final Word would like a word.^^ 5UU: Sphinx of the Final Word can't be countered. Flying, hexproof Instant and sorcery spells you control can't be countered by spells or abilities. He answers questions as readily as he asks them, but his answer is always "no". I can think of nothing more 'blue' than an uncounterable hexproof flyer that makes all your instants/ sorceries uncounterable.^^

He set up his whole placement with like his dice laid out, a Tupperware of snacks next to him, his Baral sitting there blatantly in plain view with the ugliest “smug” you can imagine right? I agree about Baral in the command zone, but I actually really like Baral in the 100. Treat him as a second Goblin Electromancer with his spell discount in a spellslinger deck (I play Niv-Mizzet Parun, Bolas, and Hinata). Also, because so many people have been traumatized by Baral decks, he's a kill-on-sight target that draws removal that I would rather hit him than my commander.

I very vividly remember when this card came out because I stopped playing Magic for a while not long after it came out due to a bad breakup, so even though it's been 6-7 years, it's still very fresh in my memory. Never played against it yet myself, but I dread the day. Please do Valki, God of Lies/Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor. He's my favorite Commander, and actually the card that got me back into Magic. Genuinely, my main gripe with Blue is not that the counter spells are there, it’s that it’s the only color that is allowed to play on that axis unrestricted. The best any other color has is conditional counters that only see play in combos or hard reads, and soft counters that are only okay. No other color has this kind of stranglehold on something considered so core to the game. Not every color needs them, fine, green shouldn’t be playing with counter magic anyway, but give non blue decks something.

And I say that as someone, who has played anything from various Control decks to Combo decks to "oops, lots of Elves" green decks to Golgari graveyard decks to Simic tempo. Countermagic literally fucking folds to Cavern of Souls. There are a lot of cards, that can't be countered. Cards with "Ward" get printed more and more etc. Additionally, if you know how your deck works, you can just bait counterspells out, too. Land destruction is another thing people complain about. You know how to play against land destruction? Get your mana from artifacts and/or creatures. Board wipes: Oldest story in the book since OG Wrath of God. Don't over-extend to your board, if you feel a wipe coming. Leave a few creatures and/or token generators in your hand. Tadaaaa, played around the board wipe. All these things are called "playing around" certain strategies. It's how this game works and how you can actually get better at this game. By learning to understand how it works. Literally "learn to play". Why is it most of the time EDH players crying like babies about the absolute most basic strategies in this game being used against them? Fucking countermagic, mate? Really? Also, your main gripe with blue is the access to the best counterspells? What is your main gripe with green? Access to the biggest creatures? Main gripe with black is access to the best discard, against red it's access to the best burn spells and against white it's access to the best board wipes? Honestly. What bothers you about blue is literally one of the defining characteristics of that colour. Green and red-green (Gruul) has access to the most creatures, that cannot be countered. It's so weird. It's almost like there is strategy involved in this game and it's almost like certain things are good against other things. General wisdom in Magic goes something like: Aggro has an advantage over Control, Control has an Advantage over Midrange/Combo, Midrange/Combo has an advantage over Aggro. It's a general rule-of-thumb, that of course has exceptions. All of these things I have mentioned are incredibly basic concepts, that one would learn in their first few years of playing Magic. I do not understand how the EDH crowd at large seems to not understand those basic things about that game we all play.

Sure, blue has counterspells. But, at least in theory, it has trouble dealing with anything that does get onto the board, with mostly temporary solutions (e.g. tapping and bouncing). Of course, in practice it doesn't always look like that. The color pie gets a little bent every now and then. In a rotating format like Standard, that's mostly a little spice, but in an eternal format like Commander those things add up. As for other colors countering things, white does have some spells that are effectively counterspells, such as instants giving hexproof until eot. Similarly, red gets the occasional "change target" spell, which is more limited but stronger when it works. There's also the occasional punisher-type counterspell ("Target spell's controller may have this deal X damage to them. If they don't, counter target spell."). Black has discard, which is basically pre-counterspells - though I could see a black spell that was something like "Counter target spell. You lose life equal to that spell's mana value."

Literally just made a CounterMill deck with this guy the other day, 14 counterspells, and some recursion, the main combo of the deck is psychic corrosion+mystic redaction+baral, and quite a bit of bounce, blink, and phase to save the enchantments, baral can go a few times, to buff the font of magic.

This is one of my preferred commanders into CEDH. I play control, stax, mass land destruction and stuff like that into CEDH. Sometimes I run a very fast combo deck. Where I'm expecting my opponents and me to try to win between turn 0-4 with 12spells on the stack... Often scoring a 25% win rate... Baraal is a good stall out commander. Our longest game was baraal, flash hulk, Lavina, naset wheels It was 4.5hours... with surprisingly very close game winning moves by everyone playing... Im pretty sure we lost to wheels due to not having a flusterstorm. But we also have had nights of playing 7matches in an hour cause everyone was winning on turn 1-3 And I play group hug/slug, political decks and off color jank otherwise... Or even just good value fun decks. Or a modification of a precon. kinda just depends who's playing... And what they're playing. Play responsibly and try to match the power of the table. Don't be the jerk to bring baraal to a precon table... And don't be a fool and bring your percon to a baraal table.

The only really fun thing about playing a Baral deck is the occasional time where they cast something, you pretend to tank for a second and "resolves". The confusion and panic is worth it.
