I knew I'd find some goodies on YT for the impromptu wake I'm gifting myself in honour of Stephen Sondheim this afternoon, but a whole Barbara Cook show in broadcast quality?? Well, that really is the icing on the cake!!!

My GAWD, how I adore this woman. I was 12 years old in the spring of 1963 when my aunt took me to see "She Loves Me," and it was love at First sight and sound. Since then I ha d the pleasure of seeing her either in a large concert or in a cabaret setting over a dozen times, both in the UK and the US, and when we lost her we lost one of the greatest talents of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Barbara, you are immortal.

Oh the great Barbara Cook. An incredible interpreter of lyrics and music as separate entities but also as one whole. So sorely missed...

Another one of those rare, special, one-of-a-kind people who come along once in a generation with whom we want to spend as much time as possible. I love the way her face lights up when she has completed a song.

My parents saw Barbara Cook at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester - at my insistence! They phoned me when they got back to thank me for the recommendation, and I have never heard such enthusiasm. They saw her a number of times after that (including the Mostly Sondheim concert), and she became my father's absolute favourite. I always think of Dad when I hear her voice, and I am quietly proud of the small part I played in him becoming such a fan. She really enriched his life xxx

I cried like a baby in most of the songs. I mean Barbara Cook has the best way of taking care of her voice. Her vocal techniques were oustanding. She was the rarest of creatures.

I want to add that when I saw her live, I was right in front to the left so I could also see her long-time accompanist Wally Harper and his hands on the piano keys. You could tell how close they were, they were connected on more than one level. He died not long after that and she was devastated. Most performers have long-time music directors and accompanists whom they trust implicitly and it's very hard when they lose them.

Barbara Cook was born in 1927, so she would have been 76 or 77 at the time of this concert. What incredible vocal technique! I had the great joy of seeing her in several concerts over the years, plus two of her master classes at the Juilliard School. A great artist!

I know how you feel. One after another. Sondheim was a particularly hard one to take because he's part of my every day life. My husband and I play and sing his music all the time. We quote his shows and have inside jokes based on our mutual love of his work.

She is utterly charming and her voice is spot on. Hitting that high note at 1:10:25 is impressive at any age and here she is at 76 hitting it, admittedly with a bit of forethought but right on. She was a treasure. So funny!

My late partner and I saw this live at Symphony Hall in Boston; it was about the 15th time I saw Barbara live, since my aunt took me to see "She Loves Me" in New York when I was 12 in 1963. She was, as always, sublime, but a terrible thing happened. They built a runway extending into the audience at Symphony Hall, and Barbara walked down that runway to see her last number, "Anyone Can Whistle." She was a minute into the song, and some total moron had forgotten to shut off his phone, and it rang loudly during that lovely quiet song. You could tell that Barbara was absolutely livid. The phone was shut off and she finished, but that guy was lucky he wasn't lynched by that Boston audience.

@@gingerauld8682 what song are you referring to? You don't read very carefully, do you? You might want to re-read what I wrote because at no point do I mention or attribute any song to she loves me, every note of orchestration of which, and every lyric, I've known by heart since my early teens.

" . . . even icemen leave her alone . . " In the days the song was written virtually everybody knew what it meant. For the young 'uns here (under 70??) there was a time, probably ended in the mid-1940 after WW2 ended and inexpensive electric-driven refrigerators became available to replace the wooden "icebox" that was a common home item. Some were the size of a steamer trunk in a small apartment while others, serving a restaurant or institution, were as big as a small room. The most common stood about the size of today's refrigerators. it was heavily insulated, usually with oak panels filled with cork. A block of ice in it would slowly melt. The iceman might come one or twice a week and refill it with blocks of ice to keep it cold. Thus, the iceman in this song.

I love the cutaway shots with all the men with their wives still sulking at being dragged along, but actually, loving it really. I didn't get to see one of Barbara's shows properly, but I was fortunate enough to see her in London when she flew in specifically to attend a memorial service for her original She Loves Me co-star, Daniel Massey. A wonderful gesture from one great trooper to another.

I was hoping she’d perform “When There’s No One” from “Carrie”. I know Stephen Sondheim didn’t write it. But, the only performances of her in “Carrie” were from a cassette recording audience member who decided to share, and it’s almost inaudible.
